oinkoink1999,  i am sorry your understanding is incorrect. firstly Capitaland had NOT offered any Rights issue and thus answer to your questions are not meaningful. Thus i take another approach to illustrate the point and hope it is clearer to you.

In order for you to have a quick understanding of Rights issue , I use the recent DBS bank Rights issue as example : The 1 for 2 Rights Issue price of SGD 5.42 per share represents approximately 45% discount to the last traded share price of SGD 9.85 on 19 December 2008 and approximately 35% discount to the theoretical ex-rights share price of SGD 8.37 per share ( these BOLD words are extracted from DBS announcement in sgx website).

The next thing you need to know is during the Rights Trading period, the nil-paid Rights has a tendancy to trade around a price that is approximately equal to (Mother share price - Rights issue price ). Let's see DBS as example below, i copy from some DBS post to illustrate a point, you can see that when mother share is traded at 8.35 to 8.62, the nil-paid Rights is traded at 2.82 to 3.18, which is approximately difference by the Right issue price of 5.42.

Lastly, you also need to know an entitled shareholder need to EXERCISE his rights by paying the RIGHTS issue price so as the convert his nil-paid Rights to a mother share. For DBS entitled shareholder, they need to pay S$5.42 to convert Rights to DBS mother share.

I hope these explanation allow you to understand Rights better. Good luck

hello freeme, the nil-paid Rights trading price is driven by market,  but it is always tracking to ( Mother share price minus Rights Issue price).

hello freeme, well, you get the nil-paid Rights free of charge, if that is valuable ( like in the recently DBS case, it traded around S$2.x to 3.x. , Even you do not want to subscribe, you can sell the nil-paid rights for money. If you do nothing, it expired and become worthless...

Hello atomicbear,  there is no CAPLAND rights issue yet. So no answers for you on CAPLAND.

However , since you ask i think you might want to know Rights issue in general, lets take a look at an example current market, a counter that has the rights issues is Hartawan : you can find the announcement in sgx website as below, just go to sgx website to find these informations:

RIGHTS

Announced on 2009-01-05
Particulars :OFFER OF 1 FOR 4 @ $0.045
Ex-date :15 Jan 2009
Buy-In Last Cum Date :20 Jan 2009
Record Date :19 Jan 2009
Rights Closing Date :9 Feb 2009
Rights Trading Period :From 22 Jan 2009 To 3 Feb 2009

what it meant is:

first you must buy BEFORE this ex-date (15 Jan) or already hold shares before this date. Then you become entitled shareholder. As an entitled shareholder, you shall then be given the Rights as declared ( in this case 1 share for every four, if you have 1000 shares your entitlement is 250 Rights). these are called nil-paid Rights, you HAVE not paid yet!

secondly, as nil-paid Rights can be sold in the market, but ONLY within a limited time period. The announcement had put that as 22 Jan to 3 Feb. Before this 22 Jan, your CDP account will be credited with your entitlement, if you had 1000 share you will see your CDP statement to have 250 Rights,  identified as Hartawan R250,

third, how to sell? you must first confirmed that your CDP had this Rights credited in your account. when this is positive, you can sell in open market as the Rights is tradeable during this period. From sgx website you can see the buy and sell quote as any other share. for this case, i copy for your reading: you can see that the mother share is traded at 0.04, since Rights price is 0.045, so it did not make sense for people to buy in open market, thus you see no trading today. You may track these counters after CNY and before 3 Feb to see its activities. if the mother share is higher than the Rights issue price ( of 0.045) then there is value of the Rights. You simply sell using normal procedure via on-line or via broker. Hope this example helps your understanding.

For etrade account, when you sell, the proceed less commision goes into your balance account immediately.. there is no t+3.

Freeme, i think that depends on your broker, and there are so many of them.

with Etrade, you need to keep a sizeable account balance (i think it is USD50K), then you can trade with per trade of commision amount to USD 9.99 per trade  regardless of how much you trade but that should be within your account balance. Yes, you can trade down to one share. As your account have enough balance, your trade is transacted IMMEDIATELY and account balance deducted immediately. so there is no t+3.

KZ9219,

If u want to subcribe to 500 excess right, you need to remember you might not be allocated what you subscribed.

However, if you subscibe and got allocated, you only pay 500*5.42 . That is the advantage of the shareholder.

If you choose to buy the DBS Rights from the market, your outlay is 500*2.95(assume closing price) p;us commision plus tax ( as you normally would need to pay for trading)+ conversion to mother share at 500*5.42.

so you see, if you are not entitled for excess right application,  you pay about the same on buying a mother share at 8.43 or 2.95 Rights +trading commision plus conversion of 5.42 to mother share.

thus the advantage of being the entitled shareholder is here: you can apply UNLIMITED Rights!! and pay less ( IF you are allocated)

good luck

S'pore may be among the first to recover from global economic slowdown

SINGAPORE: Countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong have benefited from the global economic boom in the last five years. But their open and exposed economies mean they are also vulnerable to recessionary pressures as the world economy slows down.

However, Morgan Stanley said it is not all doom and gloom for Singapore. Experts said the country would be among the first to bounce back once a global recovery takes place.

Stephen Roach, chairman, Morgan Stanley Asia, said: "If the global economy surprises on the upside, Singapore will be one of the first economies in the region to benefit from that. But I think it is hard to be too optimistic right now on global economy prospects over the next few years."

Morgan Stanley, too, is feeling the pinch of the global slowdown. It announced on Thursday that it would be retrenching 10 per cent of its staff in the institutional securities unit and 9 per cent in asset management.

The global financial services firm said less of these cuts are likely to come from Asia. In fact, Morgan Stanley remains bullish on the prospects of Asian growth once the crisis is over and this bodes well for markets like Singapore.

Roach said: "The main challenges are to consider the options that Singaporean government must consider to counter very powerful external headwinds around the world.

"The good news is that Singapore is more integrated with the rest of Asia than it is with Europe, South America and North America. The Asian region itself is likely to fair better than the rest of the world in this global downturn."

Morgan Stanley downgraded its growth forecast for Asian countries earlier this week, but it expects a sharp recovery in Asia in the next few years on the back of solid economic fundamentals in the region.

richtan, i think jj refers to BDI, Baltic Dry Index, the meanings can be found in wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Dry_Index

some information are copied from wikipedia here to help reading

How it works

The index is made up of an average of the Baltic Supramax, Panamax, and Capesize indices. These indices are based on professional assessments made by a panel of international shipbroking companies. The index can be accessed on a subscription basis directly from the Baltic Exchange as well as from major financial information and news services such as Thomson Financial Datastream, Reuters and Bloomberg L.P..

Most directly, the index measures the demand for shipping capacity versus the supply of dry bulk carriers. The demand for shipping varies with the amount of cargo that is being traded or moved in various markets (supply and demand). The supply of ships (cargo transports) is much less elastic than the demand for them, so the index indirectly measures global supply and demand for the commodities shipped aboard dry bulk carriers, such as building materials, coal, crude oil, metallic ores, and grains.

Because dry bulk primarily consists of materials that function as raw material inputs to the production of intermediate or finished goods, such as concrete, electricity, steel, and food, the index is also seen as an efficient economic indicator of future economic growth and production. The BDI is termed a leading economic indicator because it predicts future economic activity.[2]

hmm,  do not take analyst comment as a sure bet. Find a way to have your own assessment.

Some analyst some time ago predict Citi bank to outperform, that was when Citi share was at peak around 50-55 USD. After a while Citi share crashed. It is now about USD 13.2

One famous analyst in Wall street made recommendation about some high growth ( i remember like 20%) for Lehman Brothers around June-july 2008. Today Lehman disappeared and caused a lot of people huge financial lost across the world.

so, dont get confused by them.  Have fun reading their report, but find a way that suit your personality for investment.
