The Singapore Exchange issues guidelines on 'green reporting'But disclosure of social and environmental aspects of business not mandatory for now Jonathan Kwok Straits Times 29 Aug 10; The Singapore Exchange (SGX) is going green. It is encouraging all listed firms to undertake 'sustainability reporting' - or the disclosure of the social and environmental aspects of their business - and has issued guidelines regarding this. 'Investors who lead world opinion expect listed companies to be accountable for their financial results, how they achieve the results, and what impact they have on the communities within which they operate,' said a regulatory announcement yesterday. But SGX added that this disclosure of the social and environmental aspects of a listed company's business will not be mandatory at this stage. Still, mandatory rules could be developed in future as more companies adopt such reporting. The guidelines come amid allegations from environmental group Greenpeace that a unit of locally listed Golden Agri-Resources had cleared forests illegally in Indonesia. Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology (Smart), which operates all oil palm plantations for Golden Agri, has refuted these allegations after conducting independent reviews by certification bodies and forestry experts. SGX made no mention of the incident yesterday, adding only that the disclosures on sustainability of operations are particularly relevant for 'companies susceptible to environmental risks'. These include oil and gas and mining companies, as well as those that produce significant pollutants, like chemical and apparel firms. Firms that use natural resources heavily - such as palm oil producers and forestry companies - should also look at issuing reports, said the exchange. SGX suggested that the disclosures should highlight companies' policies regarding sustainability issues and contain assessments of the risks or impacts of the companies' operations. It added that companies can follow internationally established frameworks like the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Reporting Framework. The SGX guidelines were issued in conjunction with its annual Investor Day [Saturday: 28 AUGUST 2010] yesterday. As SGX celebrated 10 years as a listed company, some 700 shareholders of the exchange gathered at the Suntec ballroom yesterday to hear from its top executives. An afternoon panel session was also open to the general public, as were investment talks and an exhibition. Mr David Gerald, president of the Securities Investors Association of Singapore (Sias), welcomed the SGX guidelines. 'Globally, there is a move towards recognising the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR). So it's timely that SGX is paying attention to such issues,' he said. Mr Gerald added that Sias itself has decided that from next year, it will be giving attention to CSR practices in selecting companies for its Corporate Governance Awards. There has been an increasing focus in the region on CSR practices. In 2007, Malaysia legislated that all companies listed on Bursa Malaysia must report on their CSR efforts, including the impact of their businesses on the environment. Some companies listed in Singapore have already been issuing sustainability reports. These include Banyan Tree Holdings, Keppel Land, City Developments and Sembcorp Industries. But not everyone is sold on the idea of companies reporting on their own environmental and social efforts. 'Wherever your operations are, whether in Australia or China, you will have to comply with the regulations there anyway. I don't see much value added to investors or to the company in issuing additional reports,' said Mr Edwin Goh, chief financial officer of China Animal Healthcare, which has plants in China producing drugs to combat diseases linked to animals. Mr Goh said his company has not issued sustainability reports, but noted that before being awarded a licence to manufacture drugs, the Chinese authorities would have already inspected his firm's plants to ensure compliance with various requirements, including those related to the environment. |

HEALTHY WEALTHSaturday, August 28, 2010My Dear MamaDr Lee Wei Ling shares her heart: I know life can be unkind, but I find it difficult to accept my mother's suffering.
Difficult to accept a loved one's suffering. Feeling compassion with a detachment is wise, but tough when it comes to Mama. But the one who has been hurting the most , and is yet carrying on stoically, is my father. It is easy when thinking in the abstract, to conclude that being born, growing old, falling sick and eventually dying is what happens to all of us. I accept these facts with no resentment that life is unkind. I have had more than my fair share of bad luck, but I never resented it, for I think suffering built up my resilience. But I find it difficult to accept my mother's suffering. The Buddhist principle of feeling compassion but with detachment is wise, but it is not an attitude that I find humanly possible to adopt when it comes to Mama. I cannot see her suffering with detachment. But there is nothing I can do to get her back to where she was before she suffered a massive stroke on May 12, 2008. She has been suffering since then, and so has my father. But that is life, and we all plod on, fulfilling our duties as best we can. Indeed by focusing my mind on my duties, I manage to temporarily block Mama's suffering from my consciousness. Dr Lee Wei Ling is director of the National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore. ***************************************************************************** This is why so many heart attacks strike suddenly, unexpectedly, and with no warning. But then again, there were many signs of body dehydration which manifested and wrongly treated with drugs, hence heart attack or stroke was a kind of build-up by our health-care ignorance in reality. If only all of us were told the real underlying cause of inflammation. Read this doctor's experience with rescue a potential stroke victim(http://theinnozablog.blogspot.com/2008/07/dehydration-cause-of-strokes.html ). The artery don't have to be totally clogged with plaque - all you need in one fragile plaque that burst at the wrong time. Once doctors and scientists recognized that dehydration leading to inflammation was such a major player in artery disease, they could start looking for markers of inflammation, a chemical indicator that signals the presence of inflammation. ****************************************************************************** Unintentional-Prolonged-Dehydration... causes stroke. Stroke is one of the many survival mechanism/modes of the human body to cannibalize/recycle it own self due to unintentional-prolonged-dehydration. The percentage of water loss in the blood cells is the least among all other cells in the body and hence blood test/analysis is near impossible. Once stroke happened the limbs cells will be sacrificed , their water-content wise, to be recycled and sent to service the more important organs such as the Brain. The present approach to use invasive and surgeries to remove blood clot in the brain is only temporary, because mainstream medical societies still hold to the old "solid" paradigm in their troubleshooting procedures. ============================================ NEWS: on front page, The Straits Times, Wednesday,June25,2008. Reporter Goh Chin Lian. 1.Mrs.Lee Kuan Yew, 87 years old, (Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew's wife) suffered another stroke (3rd one) while in hospital on 24th June, 2008. It was a massive haemorrhage. 2.She suffered a stroke (2nd one) on May 12,2008 and was taken to National Neuroscience Institute for an urgent brain scan, which revealed bleeding in the right side of the brain. 3.She suffered a stroke (1st one) in 2003 while in London, on a European tour. The bleeding was also in the right side of the brain. ============================================ |

Businesses that rely on young clientele hurt by HFMD outbreakBusinesses that rely on young clientele hurt by HFMD outbreak
Symptoms of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) SINGAPORE : Businesses that thrive or rely on a young clientele have been hit by the current hand, food and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak. They are working to prevent business from sliding further. Skating shop Inline Culture has suffered a fall in revenue and attendance by 10 to 20 per cent. It has stepped up measures to prevent HFMD and assures customers that there is no risk of getting infected. The liners of the skates are washed more frequently while antiseptic is sprayed onto the skates. The shop also screens children and turns away those who are unwell. Play centre eXplorerkid has also stepped up hygiene at its premises, after pre—school centres postponed their trips due to concerns over HFMD. It has hired more cleaners and added cleaning machinery. Such efforts appear to be paying off. One person said: "It is well organised. I think they make sure that everyone is wearing socks and there is a bit of screening also in front." Another added: "We still go out. Life goes on. We just need to take more precautions." — CNA/ms |

China bars foreign food products over SAFETY concerns
China’s quality watchdog has destroyed or blocked the import of a wide range of foreign food and cosmetic products amid concerns that they posed potential health risks.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) this week published blacklists of products from a number of nations including the United States, South Korea, Japan and New Zealand.
All of the products imported in April and May — including milk powder, jam, chocolate and bath products — “have been returned, destroyed or converted to other uses” and “were not sold in the domestic market”, AQSIQ said. The safety watchdog did not specify what the “other uses” were.
US food giant General Mills was singled out after its corn muffin powder, pancake powder and cake flour were found to have geneticallymodified contents or excessive aluminium.
Other companies named included South Korea’s Lotte, US group Kraft Foods and Britain’s Marks and Spencer.

SocGen strategist: Global economy sliding back into recession
LONDON
He said there was too much hope among investors, with excessive valuations in the United States, but he predicted it would come to an end in the coming months as economic data increasingly pointed to a double-dip recession.
“Equity investors are in for a rude shock. The global economy is sliding back into recession and they are still not even aware that these events will trigger another leg down in valuations, the third major bear market since the equity valuation bubble burst,” he said.
He forecast a return to the “valuation nadir last seen in 1982”, with the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index bottoming at around 450. Early Friday in New York, the benchmark was at 1,050.
Government bonds, which are considered lower risk assets compared with equities, have remained in demand during the crisis and yields are at a low level by historical standards - where low yields indicate strong demand.
Mr Edwards predicted that a “global cyclical failure” would push yields on US 10-year yields down to between 1.5 and 2 per cent and those on German bunds to below 1.5 per cent.
“So far the equity market has shrugged off much of the weaker data that abounds, and has not joined the bond market in a perceptive move.
“The equity market will though crumble like the house of cards it is, when the nationwide US manufacturing Institute of Supply Management slides below 50 into recession territory in coming months.” The ISM index fell to 55.5 in July from 56.2 in June.
Earlier this month, US rating agency Moody’s warned that time was running out for the big countries to prevent a full-blown sovereign debt crisis.
“Genuinely adverse debt dynamics were only expected to materialise in 15 to 20 years.
“This crisis has fast-forwarded history, eroding all the time available to adjust, “ said the group’s quarterly
In its adverse scenario, it said the US would crash by 2013 if growth falters, with interest payments topping 14 per cent of tax revenues.
The US, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain are all at risk of an “interest rate shock”, either because they must roll over a cluster of short-term debt or because their deficits are so large, it said.
The equity market will though crumble like the house of cards it is, when the nationwide US manufacturing ISM slides below 50 into recession territory in coming months. Societe Generale market strategist Albert Edwards

Its fixed rate packages, with either a three or five-year fixed term, offer the lowest rate in town at 0.88 per cent a year in the first year.
For its home loans pegged to interbank lending rates, Maybank is offering a rate starting at 0.5 percentage point above the three-month Sibor for the first year.
Sibor, which stands for Singapore Interbank Offered Rate, is the rate at which Singapore banks lend to each other. It currently stands at 0.55 per cent.
Meanwhile, for its variable rate home loans package, Maybank is offering interest rates that will start at 0.80 per cent a year. This is 2.95 percentage points lower than the Singapore Residential Financing Rate (SRFR) for the first year.
SRFR is Maybank’s board rate, which has been at 3.75 per cent since 2007.
In another variable rate package, the bank is offering a $5,000 cashback and an interest rate of 1.3 per cent a year for the first year.
Maybank Singapore’s Head of Consumer Banking, Ms Helen Neo, said the fixed rate packages are very popular because they give borrowers certainty in financing their mortgages.
The new packages are in celebration of Maybank’s 50th anniversary. As part of the ongoing celebration, it has also launched a Privilege Plus Savings Account, a savings product for those aged 50 years and above.

Research on moose suggests that arthritis in humans may be related to early nutritional deficiencies.
Clues to Arthritis in Underfed Moose
By PAM BELLUCK
Poor nutrition early in life led to arthritis in more than 50 percent of the moose studied in one region of the northern United States, research over the past 50 years has shown. Collecting bones of more than 4,000 moose, researchers discovered that out of 1,200 carcasses they analyzed, more than half had arthritis, virtually identical to the human kind.
That could mean, scientists say, that some people’s arthritis can also be linked in part to nutritional deficits, in the womb and possibly throughout childhood.
The moose conclusion bolsters a growing body of research connecting early development to chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, which currently affects 27 million Americans, up from 21 million in 1990.
Osteoarthritis’ exact cause remains unknown, but it is generally thought to stem from aging and wear and tear on joints, exacerbated for some by genes. Overweight or obese people have greater arthritis risk, usually attributed to the load their joints carry, and the number of cases is increasing as people live longer and weigh more.
But studies of moose on Isle Royale in Lake Superior, along with human research, suggests arthritis’ origins are more complex, probably influenced by early exposure to nutrients and other factors while our bodies are developing. Even obesity’s link to arthritis probably goes beyond extra weight, experts say, to include eating the wrong things.
Nutrients, experts say, might influence the composition or shape of bones, joints or cartilage. Nutrition might also affect hormones, the likelihood of later inflammation or oxidative stress, even how a genetic predisposition for arthritis is expressed or suppressed.
“Osteoarthritis starts way before the person knows it, way before their knee hurts or their hand hurts,” said Dr. Joanne Jordan, director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina. “It’s very clear that we’re going to have to start looking back” at “things in the early life course.”
Such research could lead to nutritional steps people can take to protect against osteoarthritis, a condition that is often painful or debilitating, and according to federal data, costs billions of dollars annually in knee and hip replacements alone.
“It would be helpful to know if we want to make sure pregnant moms are taking certain vitamins or if you need to supplement with such and such nutrition,” said Dr. David Felson, an arthritis expert at Boston University School of Medicine.
“The moose guy is right in that we probably should study weight or some other nutritional factor almost through adolescence when the bones or joints have stopped forming.”
The “moose guy” is Rolf Peterson, a Michigan Technological University scientist on the Isle Royale project, which began in 1958. For half the year, Dr. Peterson and his colleagues are the only humans allowed on the 72-kilometer-long island, part of a national park. The arthritic moose were often small, measured by the length of the metatarsal bone in the foot. Small metatarsals indicate poor early nutrition, and scientists determined that the arthritic moose were born during times when food was scarce, so their mothers could not produce enough milk.
Dr. Peterson said if the arthritis were caused by excess wear and tear on the moose’s joints, that would have meant that times of food scarcity occurred when the moose were already grown, since the extra wear would have happened to moose walking farther to find edible plants. But the arthritic moose had had plentiful food as adults.
Studying nutrition in people is much more complicated than in moose. Dr. Peterson said the early moosehood developmental window occurred in utero through 28 months, but humans’ developmental time frame lasted into the teens. Some experts say prenatal nutrition is most critical; others see roles for nutrients after birth and beyond.
“Up until the growth plates close, which is through adolescence and even early adulthood, the effects of nutrition are magnified,” said Dr. Constance R. Chu, director of the Cartilage Restoration Center at the University of Pittsburgh, who said nutrients might affect the number of healthy cells in cartilage and its thickness.
“But in my opinion, it’s relevant throughout life,” she added.
Nutrients may affect the makeup of bones and cartilage.
