With divorce behind him, Woods shines on courseTiger Woods, playing his first tournament since his long predicted divorce became final, fired his lowest score of the year Thursday to share the first-round lead at The Barclays. In fact, Woods's six-under 65 was his best score since he was engulfed last November by a sex scandal that ultimately spelled the end of his marriage to Elin Nordegren. The couple's divorce became final on Monday, although Woods said he couldn't put his performance on Thursday down to any feeling of relief. "I can't really say that's the case. As far as golf-wise, it was nice to put it together," said Woods, who had seven birdies and one bogey as he matched compatriot Vaughn Taylor for the lead. "It's exciting to hit the ball flush again," said Woods, who hadn't led a US PGA Tour event since the Tour Championship last September. "It's something I've been missing all year." Woods's admission of multiple affairs made him a laughing stock and led to a five-month layoff from golf. His game suffered, hitting an all-time low earlier this month with his worst four-round showing at the Bridgestone Invitational. "It was a lot more difficult than I was letting on," Woods said Wednesday of playing through his divorce. "Most of the summer was like that. You try to block it out, but yes, at times it was (very painful)." Woods and Taylor both played early, benefitting from light winds and smooth greens. |

Tiger Woods latest girlfriend not Jessica Simpson, it's 'a lie' says the starThe photo above, taken in August at the pro-am AT&T golf tourn- ament, shows Jessica Simpson, Tiger Woods and Tony Romo - A picture most likely manipulated on the cover of Star mag. AP As if it wasn't enough to see Tiger fall from grace, Star magazine has said Tiger Woods' latest girlfriend is singer Jessica Simpson. The singer hit her Twitter about the mag's cover, saying: "The Shocking Story" is (insert drumroll) A LIE!" The mag has Jessica Simpson and Tiger Woods posing together in a much-obvious press picture since Simpson was on-site at the event (the pro-am AT&T National golf tournament) in August singing the National Anthem. The pic on the cover of Star could very well have Jessica's ex-boyfriend Tony Romo cropped out. See the photo above and the rest of the photos on Huffington Post's website here. |

Man being investigated for allegedly inciting violence online
Zul Othman SINGAPORE
The police confirmed in earlier media reports that they had arrested a man in his late 20s “in connection with investigations into offences related to incitement of violence”.
Investigations are in progress.
Mr Abdul Malik (picture), a project executive with a construction company, was arrested on Tuesday, a week after his Facebook post.
He told MediaCorp in an email interview that he was picked up at his office by three police officers and taken to Bedok Police Station.
There, the officers grilled him on the use of the words “burn”, “rally” and “sitdown protest” in his postings in which he allegedly said it was time to hold Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Vivian Balakrishnan responsible for incidents including the food poisoning episode.
Mr Abdul Malik conceded that his statements might have been deemed “sensitive” after former cabbie Ong Kah Chua set fire on Member of Parliament Seng Han Thong at a community event last year.
Mr Seng was hospitalised and has since recovered. Ong, who was deemed to be of unsound mind, was sent to the Institute of Mental Health.
Mr Abdul Malik, who is out on $5,000 bail, claimed that what he meant was that those who were “proved to be incompetent in handling the YOG” should “burn at the polls”.
He reiterated that he had “no intention of organising a protest at all” and he was “against” violence.
Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan noted that the urgency with which the police acted — while the YOG is still being held — seems to suggest that the authorities were taking the matter seriously.
“Generally, cyberspace tends to be dominated by negative views but the literal reading here is that someone is trying to mobilise people and these actions are taken by the police as red flags that warrant immediate attention,” said Assistant Professor Tan.
While the police action signalled that threats of personal attacks are taken seriously,
Asst Prof Tan noted that “what is interesting is if they will charge him”. |

‘Merchant of Death’ stuck in Thailand BANGKOK There are still many legal steps to go through,” Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said. Mr Abhisit’s comment came after a flurry of overnight rumours that the extradition had already taken place or that Bout would be escorted by commandos and handed over to the United States authorities yesterday morning. Other Thai officials also indicated that the US was trying to speed up the legal process but said that Thailand would not be pressured. Nicknamed the “Merchant of Death”, Bout faces accusations of trafficking arms since the ’90s to dictators and conflict zones. He has been fighting extradition since his arrest in Bangkok two years ago. Bout faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted in the US on charges including conspiracy to kill US nationals and providing material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organisation.

Chu will be back in court on Aug 31. He is not the first budget hotel licensee to be hauled to court for such an offence. Siah Chen Long, 52, who runs Shing Hotel at Kitchener Road, pleaded guilty in April this year. A licensee who knowingly allows sex workers to ply their trade within his property breaches the Hotels Licensing Regulations and can be fined up to $1,000. # FiNE AmOunt is nOt serIOUs # For a second or subsequent conviction, the maximum fine is $2,000. Why S’pore must ‘robustly’ defend its courts, police force These institutions would lose ‘moral authority’ otherwise: DPM S RAMESH rameshs@mediacorp.com.sg SINGAPORE Speaking at the Ministry of Home Affairs’ National Day observance ceremony, Mr Wong said: “We must robustly defend the integrity of our institutions of justice and law enforcement when anyone maliciously attacks and undermines the public confidence and trust which have been earned over the years.” Mr Wong, who is also the Home Affairs Minister, cautioned: “If we do not do so and allow vicious falsehoods to perversely masquerade itself as the truth, we will eventually lose our moral authority and with it, our effectiveness to achieve our mission to keep Singapore safe and secure.” Last month, British author Alan Shadrake was charged for contempt of court after he allegedly scandalised the judiciary in his recently published book Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock. The writer is also under investigation for criminal defamation. The author subsequently rejected the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ offer to drop the charge in return for an apology. The case has been adjourned. Without making any reference to the case, Mr Wong alluded to a 2008 Housing and Development Board sample household survey — involving 8,000 respondents — in which the police force had the highest score of 7.6 out of 10 points for public confidence and trust. This was followed closely by the judiciary which scored 7.5 points. The “support of the Singaporean public” meant that the authorities “are able to have tough laws against serious crime” here, said Mr Wong. “But the deterrence resides not just in these laws but in the fact that we have effective, impartial and professional enforcement of the law, which applies to everyone regardless of status, ethnicity or nationality,” said Mr Wong, who added that enforcement was “only one part of the long-term solution for low crime”. It has to go hand-in-hand with rehabilitation. In that regard, Singapore has “one of the lowest re-offending rates in the world”, Mr Wong pointed out. — The Republic must “robustly” defend against attacks on the integrity of its courts and police force — otherwise, these institutions would lose “moral authority” and Singaporeans would be poorer for it, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng reiterated yesterday. |
