Shanxi gets NDRC nod on central & south coal railway proposal Thursday, August 06, 2009
China’s National Development and Reform Commission has recently approved the proposal for constructing a railway in central and south Shanxi to haul coal to the eastern port of Rizhao, sources reported.
The railway will start from Watang Town in Lvliang City and end at Rizhao Port in Shandong, after passing Lin County, Liulin, Pu County, Hongtong, Changzhi, Tangyin and Houmiao in Shanxi and Henan province. The total length would be 1,167km.
The Shanxi provincial government firstly in August 2006 submitted a report to the provincial government, proposing building a railway in the central and southern part of Shanxi to guarantee coal transport during the 12th Five-Year Plan period.
In Jan this year, Shanxi signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Shandong province, choosing Rizhao port as the coal loading terminal.
Shanxi supplies 5 million tonnes of coal to 26 provinces and municipalities in North, East and Central China.
The province plans to raise the coal production capacity in Jinzhong and Jindong coal bases, two of the three national coal bases in Shanxi, to 130 million and 270 million tonnes by year 2010, and out-of-province shipment 30 million and 220 million tonnes, respectively.
