Real world , yes , but not a reputable singapore linked company. There must be some ethics in business dealing especially with ordinary citizens' hard earned money. It must improve its profit margin with good business deals and strategies and not take money from ordinary people through tricketry.

It is not a question of reading fine print !  It is done any time after signing the contract with all the unecesary freebies and then charge you later on.  You are educated and that is fine... how about the illiterate or people who are too busy to scrutinise their bills? You can get sucked up a couple of hundreds unknowingly  on a yearly basis.  So do be careful. There is no social responsibility as far as singtel is concerned - making money in this ruthless manner is unacceptable

At first I was angry as well. Encountered before but it is all stated in the contract.
After some thought, I think it is a creative move to increase profitability and to get people hook into the services.
Just own some of its shares and the amt paid will be paid back to us in dividends..LO

All subscribers beware of singtel tactics of imposing you to pay for something you don't need.  Tricked you by offering free service (eg ST Oracle ringtone), and then start charging one month later.  Just imagine all the busy or illiterate subscribers start paying $5 each month, singtel will amass a huge profit through this day light robbery.  So beware.  This is how singtel generate its profit.  This is one example of a recent service that i was tricked into without knowing until i checked my bill.  Check you bill carefully .. don't get cheated....you can loose hundreds of dollars every year without realising..

How can this be a good counter?

In the final analysis, I feel the Bharti deal is short term bad, long term good. Hence, I feel that it is a good idea to accumulate Singtel if the spill over effects of the Bharti deal causes it to fall to the 2.80 to 2.90 level.

Cheers and happy investing!

Analysts differ on Bharti-Zain valuations, rating

Published on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 12:45   |  Updated at Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 17:31  |

There seem to be no respite for shareholders of Bharti Airtel. The stock has fallen over 11% in the past two days after Bharti and Kuwait's mobile telecom firm Zain announced yesterday that they are in exclusive talks till March 25 for a deal which values the latter's Africa assets at USD 10.7 billion. It is currently trading 22.35% above its 52-week low of 229.50.

Should you buy or sell?
Macquarie and MOST are still maintaining their price target of Rs 280 and Rs 286 per share and buy recommendation. Both brokerages say they will review its rating post consummation and when clarity on the deal emerges.
Ambareesh Baliga of Karvy Stock Broking is buying Bharti at current levels. "We feel in the long-term there is surely value. We expected the market not to like this deal because it strains the balance sheet at least in the short- to medium-term."

Sharmila Joshi, Co-Head, PCG Sales, Emkay, advises investors to hold the stock. "I don't think this is really a price at which one can sell Bharti. We have seen time and again the stock coming down to this level. My advice is really to hold. Let whatever developments are to happen play out and let a couple of quarters pass.”

Sell, screams AnandRathi. It says implied valuations in the proposed Zain transaction suggest a 5-8% downside for Bharti shareholders. "We maintain a sell for now given the lack of catalysts." Chawla says Idea Cellular is preferred play in relative terms.

Bharti Airtel market performer, target of Rs 315: Karvy

Published on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 12:32   |  Updated at Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 12:34  |

Karvy Stock Broking has come out with a research report on Bharti Airtel. The research firm has upgraded the stock from under performer to market performer owing to the recent fall in the stock price and believes investors can start accumulating at current levels.

The report says, "Bharti Airtel offers USD 10.7 billion for African operations of Zain Telecom, in exclusive talks with Zain until March 25, 2010; a key strategic move that gives Bharti a strong presence in the high potential African telecom
market."

Bad news for Singtel shareholders - will drop to below $3 on Wed!

"The board of Kuwait's mobile telecom firm Zain has accepted Bharti Airtel's USD 10.7 billion offer to sell its African assets, excluding Sudan and Morocco. Both firms have agreed to enter into exclusive discussions till March 25. The deal would give Bharti a foothold in a largely untapped African region with significant growth potential. The stock saw huge selling pressure becuase Zain's African business is loss making at the profit after tax level.

Africa represents about 62 per cent of Zain's 64.7 million customers, but only 15 pc of the group's net profit. The deal at USD 255 per subscriber seems expensive. There is also no clarity on how much debt there is on Zain's books. It had placed its African assets on the block for the past seven months." Source: www.newkerala.com

I think this is a bad news instead of bad news . Last year, especially last quarter, when Bharti want to take over which xxx company . The price went down sharply. Last quarter i remember the lowest was like 2.88 at one stage .

Bharti share slumped once this news is out .

India's Bharti Airtel launched its third attempt to gain a foothold in Africa, entering exclusive $10.7 billion talks to buy most of Kuwaiti telecom Zain's cellular assets in a continent that offers the last opportunity for major subscriber growth.

Zain's board has approved the sale to Bharti, which is 30 percent-owned by Singapore Telecommunications, a person familiar with the issue said on Sunday.
