U.S. futures down on profit taking, Apple concerns

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures edged lower on Thursday, with traders expecting profit taking after two days of strong post-Christmas gains and with Apple Computer likely in for another volatile session on concerns over its stock-option granting practices.

S&P 500 futures edged 2.4 points lower at 1,434.70 and Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 4.25 points at 1,775.00. Dow industrial futures declined 13 points.

Unexpectedly strong housing data and year-end buying helped propel U.S. stocks on Wednesday. The Dow industrials hit another new record after a 102 point advance, the S&P 500 rose 9.9 points and the Nasdaq Composite rose 17.7 points in a light day of trading.

After the surprise on the new-home sales figures, traders will be eyeing existing home sales during November, which probably fell to 6.15 million from 6.24 million. That data, as well as a Chicago-area manufacturing gauge, are due out at 10 a.m. Eastern.

Weekly jobless claims and December consumer confidence data from the Conference Board also is on tap.

Crude-oil futures rose 17 cents to $60.51 a barrel ahead of weekly energy inventory numbers.

Basically RSI and Williams %R are indicators that tell if a stock is oversold or overbought.

Oversold means that a stock is relatively cheap as compared to its recent history. Overbought is the opposite.

I find that Williams %R is more reactive to market changes than RSI but also more prone to "noise"

U.S. Nov. new-home sales rise 3.4% to 1.047 mln pace

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Sales of new homes rose 3.5% in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.047 million, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. Sales are now down 15.3% in the past year. October's sales pace was revised to 1.013 million, from an earlier-estimated 1.004 million. The median sales price of a new home rose to $251,700 from $243,800. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting sales to rise to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.02 million from the previous 1.00 million.

U.S. stocks open higher; year-end impact in view

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. stocks opened at higher levels Wednesday, aided by the traditional tendency of the market to move higher in the final week of the year as fund managers make last-minute additions to their portfolios.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 37 points at 12,444. The S&P 500 gained 4 points to 1,421 and the Nasdaq Composite rose almost 10 points to 2,423. The market opened a few minutes late in honor of the passing of former U.S. President Gerald Ford.

Retail-sales growth weak ahead of holiday: survey

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. chain-store sales in the week before Christmas rose a meager 1.7%, their weakest advance in nearly two years, according to a survey released Wednesday.

This makes sales results for the last week of December even more crucial, as retailers look to recoup revenue they missed out on earlier in the season.

For the week ended Dec. 23, chain-store sales rose a lackluster 1.7%, compared with the year-earlier week, the softest such year-over-year gain since Feb. 12, 2005, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers and UBS Securities LLC.

"With about one in five consumers saying that they were planning to shop on the day after Christmas, the last week of the fiscal month might exceed modest expectations as consumers redeem those holiday gift cards and shop for the bargains on clearance," said Michael Niemira, ICSC's chief economist.

Niemira said same-store sales for December are tracking at the low end of the council's forecast of a 2.5% to 3.5% gain, and same-store sales for the combined November and December holiday period are also expected to be at the low end of ICSC's growth target of 2.5% to 3%.

U.S. stock market futures point to solid rise

Toyota, Ford Motor executives had meeting, reports say

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures rose on Wednesday, with the auto industry set to be in the spotlight of what could be another day of low-volume trade after a meeting between executives at Toyota Motor and Ford Motor Co.

S&P 500 futures rose 3.7 points at 1,432.50 and Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 8 points at 1,781.50. Dow industrial futures improved 42 points.

U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with bargain-hunting the theme of a session in which the Dow industrials rose 64 points, the Nasdaq Composite added 12 points and the S&P 500 rose 6 points.

The dollar was weaker Wednesday against major rivals, losing 0.5% against both the yen and the euro. Data on new-home sales in November is due for release.

Also, U.S. chain store sales for the week ended Dec. 23 rose 1.7% compared to the year-ago period, according to a survey released Wednesday by the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. and UBS Securities LLC. This was the softest year-over-year performance since Feb. 12, 2005.

Crude oil futures were up a penny in electronic trading at $61.11 a barrel.
