SMRT Target Raised To S$2.22 Vs S$2.09 By Kim Eng

11 Jan 10
Sector - TRANSPORTATION
Land Transport - Stay with the trend that works

.

Our upgrade of SMRT to BUY at $1.68 in Nov 2009 has worked well with the stock closing at $1.92 last week. Comfort (HOLD) has underperformed SMRT due to its own specific overseas concerns and the fact that bus ridership has not responded as strongly as train ridership. Buy call with TP: $2.22

Public transport grow by 16% and government still say not enough.. More using car, and vow try to increase to 70%. Likely to benefit in a year or 2. Recovery if in place, Smrt cut price during recession, ptc may want to allow it to increase price. If population still increasing, likely to have more revenue. 11 million trips per day. Wow. so much revenue. Cash based business.. Monoply... temasek link... enough reason to buy...

Market Pulse: SMRT (17 Dec 2009)

FOCUS

SMRT Corporation Ltd: Riding high

Summary:
As the operator of the Circle Line, we expect SMRT to capture higher train ridership as remaining stages of the line are progressively opened for operations from 2010 onwards. We believe a rising population and key events such as the opening of the Integrated Resorts would continue to drive SMRT’s transport services. For non-fare revenue, we are also optimistic that SMRT would likely turn in higher rental revenue amid larger lettable rental space from new refurbishments. We continue to like SMRT its defensive nature, consistently strong dividend payouts and operating cash flows. In view of market’s reduced risk aversion, we now raise our DDM-based fair value to S$2.05 from S$1.92 previously. While operating expenses are likely to trend upwards with the ramp-up in the CCL and higher electricity contract rates, we expect SMRT to uphold its profitability amid higher expected ridership and rental revenue. Maintain BUY. (Kevin Tan)

Smrt is a defensive play, upside would be limited becos any price incr in fares would have to be approved by the PTC. It must be seen as a public transport and must be for the masses. I like the available advertisment space though. It depends on your time horizon. As I have mention before, MRT is the way to go in S'pore, just like HKG. Population imports??  was it 6.5 million by 2015.?? Cannot remember. This could be part of your overall portfolio in the Tpt segment. Vested

North East Line not much threat to smrt, i think.  May be the Bullet train in 20 years time (or shorter?)  will be a biggest challeng smrt would face.

I much like to see a total 'made-over'  for  Singapore's future transportation on road because is will be envionmentally friendly if those road transport like buses are taken out 80%..  Cheers to future PM of singapore if  she/he could make singapore a NO.1 of the world in transportation.

Will our future PM of singapore be a lady ??  hey, hey , i am thinking of  Mdm Ho Chin , why not?  (Just my guess).  :)
