StarHub is just play mind game.
SingTel stand to lose big time by agreeing. They will gain the viewership but not loyalty, because the soccer fans will still be on Starhub network.
By not agreeing, they lose as well. The soccer fans will blame them for not taking it...
Very gan.
wow..this is interesting proposal by STARHUB !

StarHub 'happy to host BPL'

STARHUB has offered to carry SingTel's pay-TV content on its set-top box,
which could mean that pay-TV subscribers will not need to switch set-top boxes
or get another one to watch content from Singapore's two pay-TV players.
SingTel has yet to give an answer though, and said this was the first it had
heard of the offer.
When
news broke last month that SingTel had won the rights to pay-TV's crown jewels -
'live' Barclay's Premier League broadcasts, as well as sports channel ESPN -
from StarHub, football fans complained that they would need a set-top box for
StarHub programmes and a SingTel box for sports. |
If Singtel is determined to get a foothold in the cableTV market you think Starhub can stop it? It's downhill for the latter from here because of intensive competition. Personally I hope Starhub goes down all the way to $1 or below and renders the employee options worthless. It's an evil company.

Me also dont really understand Cloud computing.
My views on this case. It may be the marketing ideas from both the ST and SH. First Singtel came up with mio tv, then now it won the rights for EPL. Remember that most of us have either a starhub or mio tv at home. Now the ppl who had subscribe SH will be considering a switch to ST if he is one who is a real soccer fan. But if this SH subscriber had taken a 2yr contract, he may not do so as theres a penalty involved. Next ST may consider selling part of the broadcast of EPL to SH. SH subscribers may get to watch the EPL but they may have to pay an extra premium of maybe $10-$30 which most EPL fans will do rather that subscribing a new mio tv. etc. Who stands to gain here? ST? SH? We the subscribers?
This move allows ST to take over slowly the stable market share of SH in 2-3 years mainly soccer fans pie. etc. While starhub will venture out to other channels from here which involves risks. It is a right move to make SH to take the risk to venture out as ST is still a singapore brand. If anything hit, it will hurt SH not ST, anyway in the first place SH is created to cushion ST. This may not be right at all as these are my views.
Personally, im also vested in SH. Had done some averaging at ard $1.95. Bad thing is the shares are mainly sold by am frasers n some foreign trading houses. Now my avg cost ard $2.1. I would do more avging if prices hit below $1.8. Seems like it may be possible on the monday market. Lets hope SH will venture to greater heights n not greater danger.

Have A Nice Day !
Sounds too chim to me

AT&T to Be Provider Of 'Cloud Computing'
AT&T Inc. is unveiling a service that provides computer networking and storage services for business customers, making the telecommunications giant the latest company to invest in what is known as "cloud computing."
Cloud computing has become a crowded field in a short period of time, as technology companies such as Google Inc., International Business Machines Corp. and Amazon.com Inc. have announced initiatives. Verizon Communications Inc. said it plans to enter the market in the first half of 2009.
Cloud computing's appeal is that it can eliminate a company's need for its own data center. It also lets businesses pay for bandwidth on an on-demand basis.
One of AT&T's first customers is the U.S. Olympic Committee. The organization, which runs teamusa.org and other Olympics Web sites, knows traffic will leap this month as fans watch videos and look up event results and then drop sharply as soon as the games are over. It plans to use the AT&T service to increase its network bandwidth temporarily.
Jim Paterson, a vice president of product development at AT&T, said another type of business that could benefit from cloud computing would be an e-commerce retailer that sees a spike in activity on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Mr. Paterson said companies can cut networking and storage costs by as much as 30% with a cloud-based service.
Cloud computing carries risks. Amazon's storage service had an interruption last month, its second outage this year, disabling businesses that relied on it for their operations, and some companies may shy away from using a data center that they don't have physical access to in case of emergency.
Businesses are increasingly concerned with "elasticity" in their technology infrastructure, said Daryl Plummer, a cloud-computing analyst at Gartner Inc. Anticipating those needs isn't easy, he added, and both under- and overestimating them can cause problems ranging from crashes to being stuck with unnecessarily high hosting costs.
"A business has unknown capacity requirements, or maybe believes they know what the capacity requirements are, but is going to be surprised by something," he said. "Worse yet, after they respond to the enhanced need, they scale up to support it, and then it goes away."

ppl throwing 188 now, really tat bad ?
Mediaring's subsidiary Cavu is currently doing that, right?
Established since 1998, Cavu is a leading IT infrastructure services
provider that offers a full range of Enterprise solutions, including an
innovative ‘pay-as-you-use’ offering . This needs-based system for
computing power, called the CAVU Utility On-Demand Model, presents a
number of benefits to customers, including upgrades and technology
refresh, thereby protecting the customers’ investment. Most importantly
the Utility Model frees customers from huge upfront capital investments
in technology and the risk of being left holding onto obsolete
equipment.
Hi, what is the meaning of cloud computing?
What Cloud services did Starhub provide?
Cloud-computing is up and coming and only the best telco company will be a winner, if it could provide a total integrated solution and varrious level of security and the reliability and availability of the services to the public.

starhub is one of the best stocks to buy from the recent sell down....gives very good dividend which is substainable or more or less over many years....though the loss of EPL right may affect the revenue, the involvement in the next generation broadband network initiative by the government is a cash cow for many years beside the mobile phone license...at $1.80 plus and dividend $0.18 per year, you can easily achieve what warren buffet can achieve for the next 5 years (average 10% growth)...good luck
NB: This counter is one of the best stock to do averaging when it is in downtrend |

Fully agreed. Many forgot about new broadband network to be rolled out in 2 years' time and Starhub has won the contract. EPL is a losing business that Singtel has to manage.

wow...singtel in RED ..M1 in red...this one GREY !! :P
One of my fav counters... high yield div... defensive stock...
comes next FY, the main concern is that can Starhub maintain the current div payout?
hmm though there will be no impact to profit, but it will impact revenue. still does not look good on the books :) but i do agree that starhub is still good to invest. am personally vested too :)

Those who sold this counter are just following the "bad" news for losing the BPL rights without looking at the larger picture.
Do remember losing the rights does not mean StarHub profit will drop in future and bear in mind they had never ever earn back the BPL rights which they won 2 years back.
No doubt there will always be panic sellers who like to follow the headlines causing the shares to be volatile within these few weeks.
My advice to all who are still holding this shares to wait for the 3rd quarter report on 10/11/09 before you decide whether to hold or sell.
Thank you. |
