Will Dr Tony Tan run for President?

Like all Singaporeans, I am watching the political climate closely. It is clear that the next President of Singapore will hold office during a period of enormous change.

In such times, my view is that, it is more important than ever to have a President with a steady hand and a deep understanding of the complexities behind each decision the President may have to make.

Have to be realistic. The world is experiencing high inflation meaning money is getting smaller. So imagine inflation 5%, do you think when property price up 5% is real price increase? Unless the world is going through deflation like Japan before, I think property price is going up but this time steadily. Many people are hedging into gold, property, stock, insurance.... for what? Against inflation. So in real terms, those salary earner is going to get poorer and for low wages, it is going to be a serious problem.

Wealth distribution is also a real problem whereby rich will float with the tide but poor will drawn... ugrly truth

Salary panel seeks public feedback

Te o Xuanwei

xuanwei@mediacorp.com.sg

SINGAPORE

time last Saturday, the committee

tasked with reviewing the salaries of

the Republic’s political leaders has distilled

the slew of ideas it recieved from

various channels.

These include paying salaries comparable

to those of leaders in developed

nations and paying a person more only

after he has proven himself.

Other suggestions that the committee

will be considering: Have indicators

such as median salaries, income gap

levels and growth, as well as use private

sector best practices, but factor in the

calling for public service.

And the committee is calling for

more ideas with the assurance that it

“will consider every one of them for

their suitability and appropriateness”,

as committee chairman Gerard Ee put it.

In a press release, Mr Ee said that

the public can send in additional ideas

— via email or by post — by June 20.

He added: “We would appreciate it if

contributors not flame, even though

we fully understand the need to vent.”

Noting that Prime Minister Lee

Hsien Loong has not given the committee

a timeline to deliver its recommendations,

Mr Ee reiterated that the

eight-member team wanted to “get

down to work as soon as possible”.

Mr Ee said that the ideas which the

committee has compiled were culled

from mainstream and online media,

email and letters. The committee has

also written to Members of Parliament

to seek their input.

Mr Ee also set out the approach the

review committee will take.

The appropriate pay package —

inclusive of bonuses, pensions and

benefits — will be determined from a

human resource perspective, looking

at the individual grade, job size, scale

and impact of the work.

The team will also work with human

resource experts to “ensure that there is

rigour in the analysis”, he added.

This, said Mr Ee, would answer one of two questions the committee intends to find answers to: “What fair compensation would accord due recognition for the contributions of our political office holders?”

Is it wise for relatively new properties to be encouraged to go en bloc?

Letter from Francis Chan

SHOULD the authorities take another look at their policies for en bloc sales, particularly of newer properties?

In the light of an urgent need to keep a check on rising property prices, is it wise for relatively new properties to be encouraged to go the en bloc route?

The immediate impact is an increased demand for both the purchase of replacement properties, affecting both the HDB resale and private property markets, and demand for new rental units.

For the latter, it is not uncommon for most of the newer properties to be investment-owned and tenanted, hence there is a multiplier effect that heats up the entire property market.

Besides, the continuing demand drives up construction costs and the need for more foreign workers.

While this may be good for our GDP, is the quick rise in property prices what the nation needs?

What drives the private property market ultimately impacts the HDB market, in terms of land cost, construction cost, and HDB resale prices.

Given that a major part of our national wealth is our land bank, and that they are revalued based on current market prices, the longer term risk of an asset bubble cannot be dismissed.

Perhaps, it is time to re-examine the merits to place a cap on the age of properties that can be put up for en bloc sales.

The former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate is known for his political passion, good looks, and his scandalous affair with a campaign worker. The affair was first reported by The National Enquirer, a U.S. tabloid, and Edwards did the typical thing - deny, deny, and then finally... admit. Turns out, not only did he have an affair with the woman, he had a child with her.

Now, he's accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a New York hotel maid. He has resigned his post at the IMF.

The billionaire Italian Prime Minister has been linked to many, many women. The latest scandal, and the one he is possibly the most in trouble for, involves a Moroccan nightclub dancer named Karima El Mahroug (a.k.a. " Ruby Heartstealer" ). He is accused of paying her for sex while she was below the age of 18. He's also accused of using his influence as Prime Minister to release her from police detention after she was arrested for theft.

When it comes to sex scandals, Malaysia also boleh. Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek, the current MCA President and former Health Minister, previously admitted to being the man shown in a video having sex with a young woman in a hotel room. The woman was not his wife. He was expelled from MCA over the issue, reinstated, and then won the party's presidency in a three-way fight. Talk about comeback.

He " did not have sexual relations with that woman" , except he kinda did. After a harrowing media ordeal and assault from his political opponents, the U.S. President (or former President now) eventually admitted having an inappropriate relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Clinton was famously impeached, but his opponents failed to convict or remove him from office.
