Soup Restaurant launches new retail business for popular Samsui Ginger Sauce
Plan to retail in all Singapore supermarkets and to export overseas
1-for-1 promotion in NTUC FairPrice supermarkets in November
Entry into FMCG business diversifies earnings base amid rising costs and manpower shortage

Singapore, 30 October 2013 ? Soup Restaurant Group Limited has launched a new retail business for its popular Samsui Ginger Sauce, with plans for exports to overseas markets.
Soup?s tasty and nutritious Samsui Ginger Sauce has complimented Soup Restaurant?s signature dish, Samsui Ginger Chicken, in all its restaurants in Southeast Asia, since 1995. By selling the bottled sauce, Soup, a company listed on the SGX Mainboard, hopes to diversify its earnings base at a time when rising costs and manpower shortage are limiting growth in Singapore?s food and beverage industry. The sauce is now mostly sold in its 14 restaurants in Singapore.
The recipes for both the chicken dish and sauce were passed down from generations of Samsui women in Mr Mok Yip Peng?s extended family. Mr Mok is the founder and Managing Director of Soup Restaurant Group. An engineer-turned- entrepreneur, he has preserved the recipes and kept them true to the Samsui tradition of simple, nutritious food that is affordable yet healthy enough for the rigours of construction work that the Samsui women from China came to Singapore to do.
Soup is kicking off the retail business with a 1-for-1 promotion for the ginger sauce in NTUC FairPrice supermarkets islandwide the month of November.

Mr Mok said: ?Our entry into the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) business marks an exciting new phase for the Soup Restaurant Group. By building up the Samsui Ginger Sauce as a standalone retail business, we are now able to introduce the health benefits of ginger to many, many more people while giving them a tasty product that can be used in many creative ways to compliment and enhance their food.
?Our unique method of selecting the ginger, processing it and cooking it, remains true to the tradition of the generations of Samsui women who built early Singapore with their bare hands, one brick at a time.?
Mr Mok said that Soup will scale up the domestic retail business and export to overseas markets, including Japan where consumption of ginger is high.
Soup also hopes the retail business will diversify its earnings base at a time when rising costs and manpower shortage are limiting growth in Singapore?s food and beverage industry.
Soup manufactures its ginger sauce in its central kitchen at Kampong Ampat in Singapore. Its special production technique preserves the flavour and nutrition of the sauce. Every bottle goes through a rigorous process from the selection of the ginger stems, the mincing, grinding, and squeezing of the ginger, as well as the labelling and packing.
Although ginger is better known in Asia for adding flavour and zest to stir fries and soups, its nutritional benefits, in particular its long tradition of alleviating gastrointestinal distress, are also well documented. Ginger is traditionally used to remedy nausea from motion sickness, chemotherapy, pregnancy and surgery. Its anti-inflammation properties, known and valued in many cultures, partially inhibit two important enzymes that cause excessive inflammation. As such, it is used in treating arthritis and in combating other illnesses caused by inflammation.
In conjunction with the promotion, Soup will be organising a cooking competition with its ginger sauce as one of the ingredients. Interested participants will be required to take a photo of their dish and post it on Soup?s Facebook page

along with the recipe. Shortlisted entries will be invited to participate in the cooking competition, which will be held in January 2014.
