Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 10:38 AM EDT Cordis sees sales drop. South Florida Business Journal
Johnson & Johnson said its first quarter profit grew 40 percent, but was impacted by lower sales of drug-eluting stents in its Cordis franchise. Revenue for Miami Lakes-based Cordis fell 10 percent to $835 million. Cordis makes Cypher drug-coated stents, and sales have been declining since some studies linked it to heart attacks. Other studies have disputed the link, but sales have not rebounded. In the first quarter, they fell 28 percent, to $169 million, in the U.S., and 24 percent, to $400 million, worldwide. Overall, New Brunswick, N.J.-based Johnson & Johnson earned $3.6 billion, or $1.26 a share, on revenue of $16.2 billion in the first quarter. In the prior-year quarter, the company earned $2.57 billion, or 88 cents a share, on revenue of $15.04 billion. In the first quarter of 2007, Johnson & Johnson wrote off $807 million associated with the acquisition of Conor Medsystems. The company saw gains on consumer sales, including the U.S. launch of over-the-counter allergy treatment Zyrtec. Last summer, Johnson & Johnson said it had targeted Cordis employees for job cuts. The company would not reveal the exact number of cuts, but, in September, Miami Lakes workers were telling business associates that hundreds would be laid off or need to transfer out of Florida. At the time, Cordis had 1,800 employees in Miami Lakes.

Thanks. So it means that when we short a counter, the CDP straight away will immediately register in their database or screen that this account has shorted the market, right? Thus by shorting, a small player will suffer if the market wishes to catch him. Naturally a small (being restrained by limits) speculator will not be able to profit too much from shorting. A big player though (with big limits) can actually gain by continuosly shorting the counter until nobody dares to buy. When nobody dares to buy, he can then place a offer price to sell so that when others follow suit to queue, he will benefit by buying back. This kind of market is quite unruly, and can mislead the real market force, don't you think so?
CDP will know, if you short before market close, they don't even bother, as they assume that you will buy back before market closed, then that is treated as normal contra. Hence, only you know you are shorting, as you don't hold any share with CDP or any pending buy with your broking house.
For naked shorting, CDP will formally inform your broking house of your transaction. And subsequently, your broken house will inform you, esp you are the first timer conduct a naked shorting. They will not inform you again if you do it second time.
Only CDP will buy in for u in naked shorting at 11.30 T+4, not broking firm. They earn all the 0.75 commission++
Though I've been investing in and out of shares for some time, I really do not understand how to differentaite between net short and net long. Example how do we know at the end of the trading or even before that, that there is a certain amount of short position.
Experts here, please give your assistance.
