Some Asia shares rebound from China rate-hike drop
By V. Phani KumarHONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Some Asian markets rebounded from their early losses Wednesday, shrugging off Tuesday's surprise quarter-point Chinese rate hike and brushing aside fears of more rate actions in coming months. The rebound was particularly pronounced in China where the Shanghai Composite (CN:SHCOMP 3,004, +2.10, +0.07%)erased a more than 1% loss in the morning to trade 0.7% higher by midday at 3,021.98. The moves came as some analysts viewed the central bank's rate increase as a sign of confidence that the country's economic growth could be sustained despite the policy tightening. Chinese airline stocks rose on expectation of a further yuan appreciation versus the U.S. dollar, while banks outperformed on hopes the hike would improve their interest rate margins. Shares of Air China Ltd. (AIRYY 27.61, 0.00, 0.00%) (CN:601111 15.80, +0.28, +1.81%)rose 4% and Bank of China Ltd. (CN:601988 3.60, -0.01, -0.28%) (BACHY 14.83, +0.23, +1.58%)gained 0.3%. Other regional markets also pared losses or rebounded, with Taiwan's Taiex and South Korea's Kospi each rising 0.6%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index(HK:HSI 23,557, -207.23, -0.87%) narrowed losses and was down 0.9%. Also cutting earlier losses, Japan's Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NI225 9,382, -157.85, -1.66%) was 1.5% lower after falling more than 2%, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 (AU:XJO 4,625, -30.78, -0.66%) was down 0.9%.
STI going sideways, hovering around 3178 points. Dow Jones futures just negative. If Dow Jones tonight is down again, STI tomorrow morning may gap-down.

Play reflation with Singapore banks, commods -Nomura |

Singapore’s MAS surprise adoption of stronger SGD stance is likely to increase liquidity conditions in local market, further fuel rise in asset prices, says Nomura. Says markets also expecting U.S. Fed to embark on further quantitative easing early November, house economist expects Fed to buy US$600 billion ($784 million) of securities in increments of US$200 billion. “We believe the actions of the Fed and the MAS will buoy the Singapore stock market in the fourth quarter...In this regard, we believe investors should position themselves in sectors that are more responsive to reflation, i.e., banks and commodities.”
For banks, says lower interest rates will stimulate broad credit demand and bulk of SIBOR weakness already absorbed after 6 quarters of margin decline, while deposits still generate positive spread even when parked in interbank market. Nomura tweaks top picks, adds some higher beta names to ride reflation theme; adds planters Golden Agri (E5H.SG), Indofood Agri (5JS.SG); offshore play Sembcorp Marine (SS51.SG). In property adds CapitaCommercial Trust (C61U.SG). |

STI down 0.5% at 3176.62 with 2 stocks lower for every 1 higher; 1.2 billion shares traded worth $1.31 billion. Pullback today on sharp fall in U.S. stocks Tuesday, but Singapore shares expected to continue their recent run towards year end after index +9.3% since end-August. “With the MAS strengthening the SGD and global liquidity conditions supported by Fed QE actions, we see a strong fourth-quarter performance for the STI as investors shift towards reflation plays,” says Nomura analyst Jit Soon Lim.
Reiterates bullish stance on banks, now also bullish upstream commodities plays. DBS (D05.SG) down 1.2% at $14.54, UOB (U11.SG) off 1.5% at $18.62, OCBC (O39.SG) down 0.9% at $9.12. NOL (N03.SG) +4.4% at $2.15, Osim (O23.SG) +1.9% at $1.07, both on better-than-expected 3Q earnings. Support at 3142 last week’s low, 3220 resistance.

My original plan was to sell immediately after results announcement, but I see the plunge today I decided to sell it off with a little profit rather than incur a possible loss. Now GentingSp having a good run, so I just focus here. Tomorrow's focus will be back on Mapletree Industrial Trust. This IPO first day sure make money like GLC. If you want, you can buy Mapletree tomorrow.  |
