Yes, the voice of my Platoon Sgt (NZ Special Forces, airborne, Thai, Taiwan airborne Ranger) still rings in my ears each time I jog........."ours to do and die.... and not ask WHY"  Sir, Yes Sir, I was based at Changi during my NS.  Sir, Yes Sir, my Section Commander was Jew trained too. And Sir, Yes Sir, you WILL do things you never dreamt you possibly could, no questions asked too!

I can assure you that I am a very positive person......positive...but also realistic.

My point of contention is that our govt always claims that it because of PAP that we are where we are. I say, we are where we are because of all the sweat, toil and tears of ALL Singaporeans.....



Ok, let me throw something at you......what's our population growth....3, 4 % per year?? ....Naturally, with population growth, our GDP should grow proportionately. So, if our GDP growth is 6%, then what is the real growth of Spore???...2 - 3 %. That is why the govt is so keen to get more and more FT (at the expense of Sporeans...NS men).....to inflate GDP ...so that they can pay themselves big fat salaries.

From a fellow officer and gentleman who have gone through the NS grind and still subject to be called up anytime to lay down his life for our country.

Nay, think positive!  At least you have become fitter during NS.  At least our men don't need to be deployed in Iraq and risk their lives over such a self-centred war! We are indeed very fortunate to be borned here. Over the years, as we progress, grow old, become wiser, we disapprove certain policies implemented, but I guess that's life.  Not that I accept my life as it is, but i make the most out of it. I work hard, I enjoy life eating and travelling, I care for my family, and I want to think positive always.  Somehow, there 'll be days when I complain and complain eg, town councils. Then I realise that there is only so much I can do, and I give up! Instead of wasting my time in this aspect, I put it to good use, eg analysing counters!

Still, I really appreciate what our men are going thru' to protect our country,  (Not to mention soem women as well!) Thank you.

I take exception to your comments of 29 Mar 2010hrs on NS.

For a job like mine, we're 24/7 on call, the moment we get notice, we'll dump our families, everything, to go back to work. We put our lives for this stupid country. NS is child's play. Are you prepared to make such a sacrifice? If not, there's no comparison to make, no 'obscene' salary at all. Ministers don't die for their country. People like us do. And we get paid nothing in comparison.


'we're 24/7 on call.......go  back to work' ....During our NS, we are also on call 24/7.....we get recalled during the weekends, when we are doing reservists (up to 50 years old for officers)......we are still liable for recall. When we go abroad, we need to inform MINDEF ....remain contactable.

'We put our lives for this stupid country'.....Is the word 'stupid' directed at Singapore or the government. I think we should distingush between our country and the government. I think most of us love our country.....its the government that we have issues with.....am I right?

As I mentioned before, I still believe in the purpose of NS......I won't help my sons find ways out of it....I think its the right thing to do...afterall, Singapore (not the govt) has provided them with an education, health care and security......paying back to Spore is the right thing to do.

'NS is child's play'........for someone who's been thru 2.5 years of full time NS and only got dicharged from reservist at 50, Oouch!!!....this really stings.

And we get paid nothing in comparison..........At least you get paid market rates.....NS....we started at $90......ROD as 2Lt...pay was $470....and at that time I thought I was earning big bucks : )

I always have a problem with the Heroes of the Water Margin. In the end they were not betrayed by the government but by themselves. Antiquated thinking and feudalism.

This is embodied by Song Jiang who in the guise of asking for a pardon for his brothers from the government, I say he was more keen to be reinstated as a officer.

Yea, what's the point of being envious of other people's richness?  Chinkiasu will tell you that spiritual fulfillment is more important (since he's a Christian).  I feel that the higher you aim, the more pressure you will exert on yourself.  There should be a limit, failing which there will be eventual mental breakdown.  Be content with what you have, otherwise, there will be no ending comparisons.  Of course, we should also not be over complacent until the family members will suffer together with us.

Life is not tragic!  It all depends on how you look at it, and the way you live it!  I still have a few UNESCO  World Heritage site destinations to go before I am done on Earth. Fjords, Hallstatt, Machu Picchu....
