The way I handle my health is like this. When I am not sick, I will treat myself with TCM. I will do a checkup with a Chinese sinseh where he will tell me if my lung or liver or kindney is weak and need to take certain kind of "bu" medicine to strengthen them. These medicine may contain roots, tree barks, papaya leaves, etc. Sometimes he may need to poke a few acupuncture needles into my body to clear up certain blocked energy channels. Chinese medicine is good for strengthening my inmune system and early detection of any weakness in my vital organs which is lacking in Westerm medicine. I use TCM as a preventive medicine.

Sometimes unfortunately sickness breaks out through my own carelesness such as mosquito bites or bad life style, I will head straight for a Western Doctor to get immediate remedial treatment. In this aspect, Western medicine is better in my opinion. After I am healed, I resume my TCM medicine for preventing future sickness. TCM is a life term treatment which also encompass your morning Tai Chi session if one is a practitioner.

Just my 2 pips worth.

Woww....so many things can be contributed by Papaya, no wonder papaya 81 is sooo popular. Till our health science say a okk....need Western Dr for approval stamp, our TCM still cannot "pakai" (no stamp for approval)

Actually, papaya has many medicinal benefits, of which some are quoted in Wikipedia:
  • The mature (ripe) fruit treats ringworm, green fruits treat high blood pressure, and are used as an aphrodisiac.
  • The fruit can be directly applied topically to skin sores [1].
  • The juice of the fruit (specifically the enzymes within it) are used to reduce gastrointestinal gas, useful to sufferers of IBS.
  • The seeds are anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, and analgesic, and they are used to treat stomachache and fungal infections[1].
  • The leaves are used as a heart tonic, analgesic, and to treat stomachache[1].
  • The roots are used as an analgesic[2].

one thing i hate abt TCM is that the training done here is not very strigent (may just be my personal view)

Plus many TCM medications contain steroids which short term relieve the problems but long term = bad

Plus their manipulation of limb sprains can actually worsen a fracture.

Just my personal view.. dont flame me. =p

That is some truth in it..Ya, anyway anythings to do with TCM items has and must always subject to and for Western approval which mean all thing consider. TCM stamp of approval have a long, long journey to catch up with Western medicine.

Very true that Tonic Water could cure fever (heatiness) - my grand mother used to tell me to take tonic water with some salt to cool my system down.

Believe it or not, coconut water could cure diarrhoea - I was in Bangkok recently and caught diarrhoea (too much street foods). My Thai friend brought me a coconut for my diarrhoea. At first i tot it was a joke too. But he told me that his family have been doing that whenever they caught diarrhoea. True enough, it worked and I was happily eating again.

And one more thing, banana eaten together with the skin is good for constipation - haven't try it though! Cheers!

Dengue fever is a fast killing disease. My advice is to rush the patient to the hospital quickly and get emergency treatment. There is no time and highly risky to experiment with papaya leaves for this kind of sickness.

In case anyone needs any clarifications, the guy who tried the washed feet water also said it did not cure him.

So sad that he tried it.  Please understand and guard against one's own psychological vulnerability.

Psychological strength?   That is exactly the reason why people are such into fake

remedies – to show they have done their best for their loved ones.

Those who cheat for profit probably count on this and perhaps,

use this reason to help themselves sleep better at night.

\

According to TV, someone once drank water that was used to wash his mother’s feet because he heard it could cure his problem.  Sounds silly and illogical?  I think I also may do it to show my loved ones that I have tried everything for  their sake.

\

Let me clarify that I have nothing against papaya juice.  Who knows, maybe it really work?   It sure sounds better than taking washed feet water (I hope to never attempt).  IMHO, I don’t believe it for a few reasons  (e.g. how the stories/emails are presented).

\

This leads to the point of how old remedies are discovered – surely not by sending emails with the words:  pls pass this on.

er .. maybe i might have got the Indian dehydration drink formula wrong .. here's one from the internet

  • Drink a rehydration drink, water, juice, or sports drink to replace fluids and minerals. Drink 2qt of cool liquids over the next 2 to 4 hours. You should drink at least 10 glasses of liquid a day to replace lost fluids. You can make an inexpensive rehydration drink at home. But do not give this homemade drink to children younger than 12. Measure all ingredients precisely. Small variations can make the drink less effective or even harmful. Mix the following:
    • 1 quart (950 ml) water
    • ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt, or ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute (such as "Lite Salt," which is potassium-based)
    • 3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 g) sugar

Rest and take it easy for 24 hours, and continue to drink a lot of fluids. Although you will probably start feeling better within just a few hours, it may take as long as a day and a half to completely replace the fluid that you lost. http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/tc/dehydration-home-treatment

well ..this is where " Knowledge is Power " comes in ... a bit of basic science education and logical thinking helps a lot ...

i wouldn't have taken the Tonic Water if the passenger didn't highlight the quinine componet in the ingredients .. until then I always associated it with liquor and being a teetotaller , wouldn't have touched if not for reading the ingredients list .

about coconut water ... diarrhoea .. causes dehydration ..loss of fluids ..so have to replensih the fluids .. so coconut water .. contained in a hard shell free from contamination will do the trick too ... in India , it is still written on the walls , literally, educating the masses that if u have diarrhoea mix one tablespoon of water and one tablespoon of sugar in a glass of water and drink it up .

banana is fibre laden .. so just eating without the skin will do ... once as a kid i swallowed a coin and the remedy was to eat banana .. to increase the bulk ... and i still remember, until then very worried , jubliantly calling out that the coin had come out ... hahahaha !

for constipation .. just add a fruit to ur diet everyday .. from experience taking an apple or orange or banana after dinner will make u visit the toilet the first thing in the morning ...

washing feet ... naw ..i won't do it ... i will question them 'scientifically' ...hahaha !

psychological strenght .. placebo ... mind over matter ... prayers .. positive thinking ... now something to think about outside the science ...hahaha !

ok ... apply ur both scientific and non-scientific methods  to win the $3 million Toto draw today ... hahahaha !

Better drink a glass of  warm urine straight from your own tap every four hours. This should cure all sickness. If you don't believe, just surf the net and look for "urine theraphy".

personally, i wouldn't just write off such claims. if it could help, why not ? (subject to the source of the email .. was it from a well meaning relative etc ? ) . besides its just juice of leaves, like chewing betel nut leaf ...plant source.

of course, admission to the hospital will the first and foremost priority. this papaya leaf juice could be 'experimented' on the sidelines , at least give some psychological strenght/placebo to the patient or close ones . ( did u know that papaya contains papain, a  meat tenderizer ? )

If u remember , in the early days , the treatment for malaria is quinnie . it is actually derived from the bark of a tree . of course, it had to undergo rigorous scientificexperiments to be established as medicine . but the indigenious people of (was it Brazil ?) had been using it for a long time before the modern world discovered it. of course , by now quinine would have been been replaced by newer agents for the treatment of malaria, but then it did help out back then .

of course , rigorous scientific proof will help a lot .

philosophically speaking where did all our medicine originally came from ?

--------------------------------

Talking of quinnie , a personal experience/trivia :

Tonic Water , the ones in the can (F&N, Swepppes) contains quinnie salts. this gives the bitter taste. once , when i was feeling feverish during travel, a fellow passenger asked me to drink the non-chilled tonic water ... and i swear the fever vanished . the bitter taste was even comforting for the dry mouth.

Err... did the patient's father actually consider that the child's immune system was already overpowering the dengue virus and that the papaya juice was just a red herring (ie, if he didnt give the juice, the patient would have recovered anyway).

Dengue is a self limiting disease MOST of the time but need to monitor the platelet levels so that does not drop to critical levels.  Of course, sometimes, more serious complications occur.

So all these "remedies" are actually not remedies. Its just ur own miraclous body doing its work

Just my 2 cents.
