GLOBAL CAR SALES SET FOR BIG GAINS IN 2010 (REUTERS  30-12-2009)

Auto sales will gain momentum worldwide in 2010 on the back of better access to credit and a return to 3% growth in the global economy, according the latest industry forecast from Scotia Economics.

China , which became the world's largest auto market in 2009, will lead the way, along with india and brazil, but the U.S. market will also see a double-digit advance, according to the report, which was released on tuesday.

"Global car sales will continue to be buoyed by the ongoing massive and synchronized monetary and fiscal stimulus, which has generated a global economic recovery, including improving auto lending across the globe," said carlos gomes, senior economist at Scotia Economics.

SHANGHAI (AP) -- General Motors China and state-owned automaker FAW Group Corp. launched a 2 billion yuan ($293 million) joint venture Sunday to make light-duty trucks and vans, initially for the fast-growing Chinese market.

GM said the joint venture will use two existing factories affiliated with FAW and have a capacity of over 100,000 vehicles. That is expected to double by the end of 2010, GM China Group President Kevin Wale told reporters in a conference call.

Plans call for building a new assembly plant in Harbin, he said.

China is a key growth market for GM, which is expanding here despite its difficulties in the U.S. market.

"Light trucks and vans have a significant role in China and other parts of the world," Wale said. "Adding trucks rounds out our vehicle portfolio in China. It's really a key focus for future growth."

The 50-50 joint venture, based in the northeastern Chinese city of Changchun, where FAW is also based, will make FAW-branded vehicles for the Chinese market, GM said in a statement. The venture might make GM-branded vehicles for export later, but the focus for now is on meeting demand in China, Wale said.

Production will be at the existing factories in southwestern China's Yunnan province, a facility owned by FAW-affiliate Hongta Yunnan Automobile Manufacturing Co. Ltd., and at Harbin Light Vehicle Co. Ltd. in the northeastern city of Harbin, GM said.

It said the two companies will conduct research and development, exports and after-sales support as well as vehicle production.

"Our new joint venture combines the expertise of two industry leaders in a partnership that benefits both," Nick Reilly, GM executive vice president, said in a statement.

"It will address demand in China and other markets for high-quality, affordable products in one of the industry's most robust segments, while complementing the portfolio of products that GM and FAW currently offer," Reilly said.

Discussions on the venture began in early 2007 and it obtained regulatory approval in July, GM said.

FAW, originally known as First Auto Works, was founded in 1953 and began production in 1956. It sold 1.53 million vehicles, including sedans, vans and trucks, in 2008.

GM's sales in China jumped 38 percent in the first half of this year, helped by strong demand for its minivans and other small vehicles. The automaker sold more than 100,000 vehicles a month in China from January to June for a total of 814,442, a record for any half year, the company said. That compares with sales of 1,094,561 GM vehicles in China for all of 2008.

Adding truck production will help expand the company's exposure in one of the few major markets that continues to grow.

"These are quite different customers and quite different products," Wale said.

He said he expected GM's commercial vehicle sales to reach 80,000 to 90,000 this year and to rise further next year.

China wants half of passenger cars, including sport utility vehicles, sold to be self-developed by 2015, state media said on 16-12-2009, up from 44% now, as part of a push to build up its own auto industry.

Chinese automaker's own-brand sedans should account for a 40% share of the market, according to revised guidelines for the auto industry, the Shanghai Securities News said, citing unnamed sources.

The guidelines, expected  to be released in the first half of 2010, also called for chinese companies to hold at least 50% of any newly-formed foreign venture producing green cars, batteries and key components, the newspaper said.

Potential beneficiaries of the PRC stimulus package extension

Automobile industry - The PRC Government has decided to extend the tax cut for purchases of small cars (1.6L and below) into 2010. Although the tax cut quantum has been reduced, the decision to extend it will still be positive. In addition, the government announced that the standard subsidy range for the replacement of old autos has been raised to Rmb5,000-18,000/unit from Rmb3,000-6,000/unit. As its exposure to the domestic automobile industry increases

Car sales in China are expected to grow by 1 million units in each of the coming 10 years, spurred by economic growth and low car-ownership, Dow Jones reported on 25-11-2009, citing an auto industry official of the world's most populous nation.

Over 60% of car buyers in China are first-time buyers, and more than 90% of chinese car buyers make their purchases with cash, not reliant on bank loans, said Dong Yang, executive vice chairman of china association of automobile manufacturers (CAAM), at a cross-strait auto makers forum in Taipei on 24-11-2009.

"At this stage of auto market development, this trend of first-time buyers will continue for some time," said Dong.

Earlier this month, CAAM estimated that auto sales in China will reach 13 million units in 2009.

 Hi,

Actually im quite interested in this counter and has vested but not sure if this is still a good invvestment.Any comments??

1) 3rd Qtr result below expectation.Although China operation is still in the black, result are lower compare to 2nd Qtr.Lose fromAmerican Operation continue to drag down group results despite company effort to streamline oversea operation.

2) Management has stated "However, as fourth quarters are normally lull periods for sales, we may not see improvement in the next reporting period.". As the auto industry seem to improve especially in China, there was no evidence from the report that CAE has any major gain on it.

3) Although there is turnaround marco environment, there is no postive improvement in US Auto industry.

 4) I dont understand why Car Manufacturers around is picking up sales yet CAE still havent shown some major improvement in sale this qtr.

 5) Bad debt and impairment has been reflected in US Operation as other operating expenses, not sure if there will be more next qtr??

Hmm...any comments??
