SHANGHAI, July 5 (Reuters) - China's main stock index tumbled
as much as 3.1 percent in early trade on Thursday, led by
large-caps such as Chalco <601600.SS>, because of the rising
number of new-share issues and the government's plan to issue
1.55 trillion yuan ($200 billion) in special treasury bonds.
The Shanghai Composite Index <.SSEC> hit an intraday low of
3,697.97 points before it trimmed losses to trade at 3,730.466 at
0316 GMT, still down 2.2 percent from Wednesday's close.
The index has seen a slow but steady decline over the past
two weeks, which brought it to its lowest close in nearly a month
on Wednesday.
"With huge new share supplies pouring into the market and
under the pressure of coming special bond issuance, investors see
no hope for the market to reverse its recent weakness in the near
term," said Zheng Weigang, senior analyst at Shanghai Securities.
Analysts said they expected the index to continue to fall in
the near term but believed it would support at its recent low of
3,404 points hit on June 5.
