It has submitted a bid to buy the chip assembly and testing operations of Agere Systems Inc, a unit of Lucent Technologies, the Business Times reported, citing an unnamed industry source.



"Agere has been trying to go fabless for quite a while and is looking to hive off its manufacturing segment," the newspaper quoted the source as saying. No details of the bid were given.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. late Thursday reported that quarterly profit rose fourfold from a year ago, when it booked a large restructuring charge, as customers shrugged off the company's corporate spying scandal and bought more of its printers and computers.

H-P said net income for the fiscal fourth quarter ended Oct. 31 rose to $1.7 billion, or 60 cents a share, from $416 million, or 14 cents, a year ago. Last year's results included $1.57 billion in restructuring charges.

Revenue climbed just over 7% to $24.6 billion, up from $22.9 billion and more than the $24.1 billion expected by analysts.

H-P has seen stronger demand for its PCs as its cut prices to gain share against its chief rival, Dell Inc.

Last quarter, H-P regained its spot as the top seller of PCs, worldwide, according to technology research firm Gartner Inc.

"H-P looks solid," said Shaw Wu, an analyst with American Technology Research who rates H-P shares neutral.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Dell Inc. has postponed the quarterly financial report scheduled for Thursday afternoon as the Securities and Exchange Commission has stepped up its probe into the accounting practices of one of the world's biggest makers of personal computers.

Dell, in a statement issued Wednesday evening, said it plans instead to release its third-quarter results by the end of the month due to "complexity" it has faced in closing its books for the quarter.

Yup, Rickytan! I really wait long long for this tech uptrend after the huge May corrections. Anyway, its timely too cos Christmas is tech chiong time.

I believe this uptrend should hold for a while. Tonite is Dell and HP earnings, if good results, tech will rocket. Shiok!

DBSV raised its  target price to $1.35 from $1.14 while keeping its "buy" call on the stock due to the company's positive growth outlook.



"The positive growth guidance is reflective of the relatively more positive outlook within the semiconductor (and) electronics industry in view of the upcoming holidays season," DBSV said in a client note.



"There continues to be some pockets of inventory adjustment exercise, and we reiterate our view that healthy demand will expedite this adjustment phase, " it added.



The brokerage expects STATS ChipPac to post a net profit of US$72.2 mln this year compared to a net loss of US$26.3 mln last year. It then expects the company's earnings to grow to US$100.3 mln  next year and to US$168.2 mln in 2008.
