New portable lithotripter quickly clears urinary stones

October 3, 2007

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The "StoneBreaker" is a rapid and effective means of fragmenting urinary stones, according to UK and Indian researchers.

The device, from LMA Urology, Gland, Switzerland, "is a novel high-powered, hand-held portable lithotripter that appears to offer much faster intracorporeal lithotripsy compared with other ballistic lithotripters, thereby helping reduce operating theatre time," lead investigator Dr. Abhay Rane of East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, UK, told Reuters Health.

The pneumatic lithotripter can generate contact pressures of up to 2.9 MPa at the tip of the probe, the investigators report in the September issue of BJU International. The device is powered by a carbon dioxide cartridge that can deliver at least 80 shocks via a spring-loaded hammer that drives a projectile into contact with the probe.

The researchers prospectively evaluated 102 patients who required treatment for urinary stones. Forty-nine underwent percutaneous nephrostolithotomy, 48 had uteroscopic stone fragmentation and 5 underwent vesical stone lithotripsy with the StoneBreaker.

All stones were successfully fragmented and patients became stone free. No direct complications were attributable to lithotripsy and there was no evidence of tissue trauma.

The researchers call for further studies to determine the circumstances under which the StoneBreaker might best be employed. However, it appears that this device is "an effective, compact and portable intracorporeal lithotripter."

hi jamsimone

Good luck to you for  trading on  LMA shares though  the daily volume  is very low!    Guts' feeling that the turnaround shd be very soon coz' of the low daily volume. If you keep  trading on LMA shares, you may not have the chance to buy back the shares @ the current low prices when the  turnaround  starts.

Hi,

dont worry about LMA lar ... I have "played" this counter quite a few rounds buying and selling sometimes around 15lots.

This is indeed a defensive stock ... the Laryngeal masks are sellling well ... in fact, if you were to read-up closely ... recently some companies came back to buy LMA masks instead of using "imitations".

I top-up the 7lots 'cos I am more interested in the vast potential Stonebreaker.

Good Luck!

Buying LMA shares is just like taking part in the "Subaru - Hands on Bonnet Competition". . Take your hand of the bonnet (e.g.)  and u r out of the competition.   It's a matter of who can outlast the competition - the "manipulators" or 'members of the public".  Move north - very small volume transacted today.

Hi chinkiasu

Tks for being very humble.  Your precious advice is deeply appreciated.  Hope other SJ participants will read your posting and buy LMA shares soon   E.g. a "jamsimone" bought the very few lots on sale yesterday.  Today, very "wu liao" for LMA: the queue- to- sell and the queue-to- buy   volume is shockingly low today.

Hi Singaporeregal

What's your point of view on LMA, an "international brand"  remaining  as a penny stock not long after being listed?    Surely, LMA mgt did not expect in their wildest dream that by listing  its shares @ 88cents.  Other less reputable companies have got out of their "penny stock" status, and  have been able to maintain the new status,  not long after being listed

Hi chinkiasu

U r simply wonderful(r u in the medical profession or sr u simply very knowledgeable abt the product?). Tks foryour very learned clarificaton.  Through your "thesis" (joke, lah) r u telling SJ participants that LMA is indeed worth investing in?  Today,  the "wu liau"  manipulator ? is queuing to buy @ a low price but trying to sell @ a high price that is two or three bids higher than the buy price . He (or they) must have got "fed-up" that investors dare to buy @ the low sell price.

Hi Hikitty & Kilroy.... i thinks I should clarify/refine Kilroy's statement

Laryngeal masks are used in anaesthesia and in emergency medicine for airway management. They comprise a tube with an inflatable cuff that is inserted into the pharynx. They cause less pain and coughing than an endotracheal tube, and are much easier to insert. However, a standard laryngeal mask airway does not protect the lungs from aspiration, making them unsuitable for anybody at risk of this complication.

The device is useful in situations where a patient is trapped in a sitting position, suspected of trauma to the cervical spine (where tilting the head to maintain an open airway is contraindicated), or when intubation is unsuccessful.

The device sits tightly over the top of the larynx. It avoids tracheal intubation and can be used with spontaneous respiration or artificial ventilation. However, it may not protect the airway from the aspiration of regurgitated material. It has found favour in day case surgery. Patients who have been treated with a laryngeal mask airway claim it does not irritate the throat as intubation typically does.

If use of an laryngeal mask airway is not suitable or appropriate, an endotracheal tube may be used to facilitate ventilation and prevent aspiration.  The first laryngeal mask airway, the LMATM airway, was invented in the 1980s by the British anaesthetist, Dr. Archie Brain. Since their introduction twenty plus years ago as a safe, effective alternative to the endotracheal tube doctors and the emergency medical community around the world have chosen to use laryngeal masks over 150 million times. Unfortunately there newer versions of the original LMA which have infringed on the copyrights of LMA (hence LMA is contesting Ambu in Germany & Holland). .

hikitty, you are right in saying if its a monopoly case, the share would not be in this state. I fully agree with you.

Nonetheless do we know whats the market share is like for its product compared to whats available today? That MAY help in some investment decision making.

Hope to see the business turn around soon too though I am not vested. : )

Tks for the clarification, Kilroy.  LMA shd move north soon coz' it shd turn around to profitability after 2007. It has never been my understanding that LMA product is the ONLY device available.  Other hrands would also be in use. If LMA is a monopoly, its share price would have reached the moon since being listed

Though this stock is more then a month old since its IPO as I understood from my surgeon friends, Laryngeal Mask Airway is an ALTERNATIVE airway device used for anesthesia and airway support and not THE only device available.

Hello hikitty,

Regarding the IPO price, I personally feel that some people are too hooked onto IPO bidding. It has become almost like buying a lottery. The over-subscription drives the stock price up artificially. Many a time, after the fever has died down, the price plunges.

From a TA point of view, I avoid IPOs and wait for a month or two for the new counter to generate a decent enough history for the charts.

I have never seen such a low transaction for a new stock than  LMA's  7 lots that was transacted today.  It must go down in SGX history or shd I say Guinness Book of Record as the LOWEST  transaction or MOST DISGRACEFUL experience for any new share of "international" status.  Guess the intention of the LMA Board of Directors was not to list LMA as a penny stock when the IPO price was 88 cents.  Unfortunately, it has remained as a penny stock (i.e. has been deliberately submerged below IPO price by "invisible hands"?) since May 2006.

Hi doshur

Price dropped - but ONLY seven lots done as at 4.52pm.  Time for a rebound?  Guess who is or are the BBs or syndicates - how to generate profit or loss statement every day?  How to accumulate on the dip?  Pay the minimum brokerge of $25 to $40 per lot or for the seven lots. Whoever he or she must be very rich, yeh?

Hi doshur

Price dropping daily, but the volume has been drying up!.

Once the "public investors" (who are mainly stags) have dumped their shares, LMA shd see better days.  After, only 2,820,000 shares were sold to the public.   If LMA is that "lousy",  why must the  top twenty shareholders (most of whom are local shareholders e.g. OCBC Securities, DBS Vickers Securities, Kim Eng Securities) hold  in total abt 507 million LMA shares.

Hi chinkiasu

I've benefited a lot from the helpful and encouraging postings of  SJ participants ( u r one of them).  In a down market, value investments can withstand the onslaught of short sellers!!

LMA  has a universal market as those who had been operated on would have used an airway mask (only ONE of its products) though it might not necessarily be the LMA brand. As the world is its market, LMA's future revenue growth shd be rosy.  So far, 2007 has been very profitable!! When LMA recoils, its price shd move north fast to make up for LOST time - suppressed since May 2006!  Hope other SJ participants, who have not vested in any LMA shares, would  buy the low number of LMA shares @ current low prices b4 they get gobbled up by others.
