Just for info sharing...TAMASICK "Si Bei Heng"

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20081127/tts-us-finance-banking-takeover-merrill-972e412.html

AFP - Thursday, November 27WASHINGTON (AFP) - - The Federal Reserve on Wednesday gave formal approval to Bank of America's acquisition of Merrill Lynch, the Wall Street icon battered by the housing and credit crisis. The 50-billion-dollar stock acquisition had been announced in September at the same time rival Lehman Brothers collapsed and fears were rising over the survival of Merrill, the brokerage giant with the bull sculpture outside its Wall Street headquarters. On finalizing the deal, Bank of America would bolster its position as the largest US banking and financial firm with assets of 2.7 trillion dollars. Bank of America, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, would control deposits of some 852 billion dollars, or 11.9 percent of the US total.

From both long term investment and global scale... our local funds going overseas to buy/invest now is still a good long term plan... since even if our funds stay on (invest locally), so what if manage to save STI/stocks market in singapore, but we are such a small country, even if we do well, but the world economy is not, then also not much use, cos we are small and pretty much dependent on export to the rest of the world... so ended up just saving STI/local stocks still wouldn't save the singapore economy bah.

Just my personal view

I don't believe that we have S$700b in fixed deposits. The bank will use the money to invest. When someone draw out the FD, the bank got to find money to pay up their customers. Where to find the money? The bank got to sell what stocks they are holding. Maybe now the banks are already selling, trying to get money to pay those Lehmen investors. Which may be why US market up, but our STI dropping. Once the Lehmen investors got their money, they will invest in stock which may then drive up the market.

We still have got S$700b in fixed deposits in singapore banks.

If the mkt is low enough, people will start moving their FDs into shares, as long as the company is financially sound.

Imagine u have a 10k FD and OCBC is at 2.5 or DBS is at 5, do u want to buy OCBC and DBS or keep the FD?

If the STI is low enough, the S$700b FD will be more than enough to buy up the whole STI.

I agree that our markets are small comparing to the big boys but we must bet back to our fundamentals, where the funds are from?

At 1200, i think our local funds also run away. no more bullets. All our bullets are in USA and Aust. Maybe, Singaporean can get PR much more easy from USA and AUST since we have put in so much money in their economy. Confirm, that is way to go - STI go no chance.

Spore market is small. People need to extend their Second Wing to go global to hunt for opportunities, as what many had done so liao.

Now, under the sun, ALL is in the same delima liao. Needs time to clear the wounds loh.

We have not reached the point of maximum distress.

Maybe at STI 1200, if not most probably at STI 800, GIC and Temasek will come in.

Why are our 2 big local funds are buying overseas counters? I am shocked to learn that GIC eyes bigger stake in Aussie property firm.

Don't they know that internally, STI is bleeding from the high of 3900 to the current 1600plus. With no foreign funds coming in to support, the index stocks are free falling everyday. This is a crucial time for our local funds to react. What is the use of investing overseas and internally, we are badly hit. I am deeply concerned on the investing plans that out local funds are adapting.

So far, most of the investments made overseas are in red - ML and UBS. Why not consider investing in ourselves?
