Thanks Singaporegal & Manikamaniko for sharing.. Smiley Cheers !

Article Dated - 25 November 2006

Why use Technical Analysis?
I am a lazy person. I don't have the patience or energy after work to read through analysts reports and comb through various websites to find out if its time to buy or sell a particular stock. I want to be able to come to a trading decision quickly and as painlessly as possible. With TA, I can come to a buy-sell decision in just 3 mins by looking at 3 or 4 different charts. At that speed, I can monitor a substantially larger number of stocks than most other people.

Before I used TA, I used to look through the BUY or SELL recommendations of various analysts but they have often disappointed me. Even if I follow their advice, it was a 50-50 chance that I would make a profit. I also didn't have a game plan in mind or a set of rules to follow. I ended up losing more money and was better off just putting my money in the bank to collect interest.

I decided to do something about it and I picked up a book - Long Term Secrets to Short Term Trading by Larry Williams. That book really changed my trading philosophy and techniques and I still refer to the guiding principles of Larry Williams today. It was the best book I ever bought! I have now been practicing TA for the past 4 years. Statistically, 70% of my trades were profitable ones that average a profit of between 5% to 15% per trade. I buy and sell a counter within 30 trading days. For my losing trades, I will usually cut loss when the price drops below 3-5% of the price I bought.

Trading Philosophy
I subscribe to Larry Williams' philosophy in trading. Here are a few golden nuggets I got from reading his books -
  1. Trade objectively and never let your greed or fear interfere with your trading
  2. Short Term trading actually reduces your risk and exposure because your money isn't locked up in Stocks for a long time
  3. Ride the trend. I don't use support/resistance levels or set price targets because trend is all that matters to me.
  4. Be a pessimistic trader. In trading, being too confident or optimistic can cause you to lose money. Its better to lose an opportunity to make money than to lose the money itself.

What to buy?
I adhere to strict rules when I purchase a stock. I only monitor a basket of stocks that have these basic numerical characteristics:
  1. Daily trading volume of greater than 1 million shares
  2. Must be between $1 to $5 in price

A healthy daily trading volume is extremely important to TA people (who trade frequently) because we want to be able to get in and out of a stock easily. A low volume counter will not allow us to be so nimble. Also, if a price is too cheap (<$1) the stock will be prone to too much volatility and the TA charts will not be very accurate. Conversely, if the price is too expensive (>$5), I find that the stock price movements tend to be rather sluggish and boring.

When to buy?
I make use of these charts -
  1. Accumulation/Distribution
  2. Chaikin Oscillator
  3. RSI
  4. Williams %R
  5. Bollinger Bands

An ideal buy signal for me is when the Acc/Dist and Chaikin are uptrending and show signs of divergence with the stock price. The RSI and Williams %R should NOT be overbought but they should also be on the uptrend. Also, if the Bollinger bands are also really close together, I am more confident that there will be a sharp price increase very soon.

When to sell?
I will sell out when either one of the following occurs -
  1. When I have suffered a 3%-5% loss  (Sometimes, the stocks do not behave as the TA predicted so I will cut loss)
  2. Accumulation/Distribution shows a trend reversal by starting to downtrend
  3. Stock price falls below 3%-5% of its previous peak (this will usually be accompanied by the Acc/Dist downtrending)

Do I use any special software?
Nope! I usually just make use of the free charts available on ShareJunction and also on Poems. I don't believe in paying money for advanced charting software that serves the same purpose as the free ones. They're an overkill!

techsys,  since you order 23-25 or Nov 20 and that day it went down to .2. Today closing  is 27.5 cents, so it is about 3 cents gain for you.

Hi techsys,

I base my comments mainly on TA charts and not on fundamentals. Maybe FA people will tell you a different story. But they have a different timeframe from me. I am very short term - only 2-4 weeks holding period.

Most counters look bearish now and maybe its because of the current bearish environment.

For Jade, the Acc/Dist and Chaikin are still heading southwards, which is a bearish sign. However, Jade is a penny stock and TA may not be accurate for this one. So please take my comments with a pinch of salt.

Jade had broke out from its ST MA.

Both RSI and stochastics is also trending up. Keep under observation as not sure whether this is a false dawn.

Hi Singaporegal,

Think today Jade can be bought now.  I put entry point arround 230 - 250.  Can you tell me what is the thing that make you think it's bearish now ? Of course current market .. but is there something else specific ?

TA signals have not changed much. Still bearish looking.

I think its too early to say that it is reversing. Better to be cautious.

TA may not be accurate for this stock but the price has cut below the lower bollinger band and its Acc/Dist is downtrending. Bearish signs.
