Expert: China's capital market can withstand interest rate hike

08:49, December 10, 2010

China's prudent monetary policy stance won't rock the stock market even if there is an interest-rate increase, senior officials said.

"A possible rise in Chinese interest rates will affect stock prices only for two or three days," Xia Bin, an academic adviser to the People's Bank of China, was quoted as saying by the China Securities Journal yesterday. "Stock investors should realize that an interest rate increase only has a short-term impact."

Shanghai's key stock index has been falling over the past few days as worries about higher interest rates deepened. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.3 percent to the lowest in almost two months yesterday.

The government is due to release November's economic data on Saturday. The Consumer Price Index, the main gauge of inflation, is widely expected to rise to a new record and has triggered speculation for an imminent interest rate hike.

Wang Qing, a Morgan Stanley economist, forecast the inflation rate may climb to 4.8 percent in November from a year earlier, up from a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October.

Some analysts called the coming days a "sensitive" period for an interest rate rise.

Meanwhile, Wu Xiaoling, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and vice chairman of its Financial and Economic Committee, said the central bank needs to further raise reserve requirement ratio and issue more bills next year to reduce excessive liquidity.

"The priority is to increase the sterilization to reduce the impact from global speculative capital on China's real economy," Wu told the 21st Century Business Herald.

Wu said there is still room for further rises though the reserve requirement ratio has hit a record high of 18.5 percent after five hikes this year.

Tiger Airways (TAHL.SI), the Singapore budget carrier part-owned by SIA, said it transported 464,000 passengers last month, 10% more than a year ago. Tiger Air will also extend leases on two Airbus A320 aircraft for a further 18 months starting from January, it said on Thursday. The stock lost 0.5% to $1.85.

Singapore massage chair maker Osim International (OSIL.SI) said on Friday it has submitted an application for the offering and listing of 85 million Taiwan Depository Receipts, at a temporary indicative offer price of NT$20.80 (90.5 cents) each. Wastewater treatment firm Bio-Treat Technology (BIOT.SI) said on Thursday it has won a 500 million yuan ($75.1 million) contract with the Henan Province San Men Xia Industrial Zone Consultative Committee to build a water treatment plant in Henan, China.

SIA Engineering Co. (SIE SP), Asia’s second-biggest aircraft maintenance services provider, said it won a five-year contract, valued at $300 million, to provide maintenance services to SilkAir. 9 Dec 2010 – STI close Up at 3210. Moving Sideways.

Quite Good to see STI stays above 3200 these 2 Days.

If tomorrow STI can move above 3210, we could see the continuation of the Bull Run, else we may have to wait a little longer.

More on my Blog at Alex Trades.

This is just my personal views.

Good luck.

Singapore shares may open a tad higher on Thursday after Wall Street edged up overnight as gains in financial and technology stocks offset declines caused by a recent surge in bond yields. Singapore’s Straits Times Index increased 0.3% to 3,202.80.

The following companies may have unusual price changes in Singapore trading today, say Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg. Stock symbols are in parentheses, and share prices are from the previous close.

Commodity suppliers: The Thomson Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index, which tracks prices of 19 commodities from copper to corn, gained 0.4% in New York yesterday. Noble Group (NOBL SP), a Hong Kong-based commodities supplier, climbed 1.9% to $2.15.Olam International (OLAM SP), an agricultural commodities supplier, fell 0.3% to $3.20.

Palm-oil suppliers: Crude palm-oil futures for February delivery fell 0.4% in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, snapping its six-day rally. Golden Agri-Resources (GGR SP), the world’s second- biggest palm-oil producer, rose 0.7% to 77.5 cents. Indofood Agri Resources (IFAR SP), the palm-oil unit of Indonesia’s biggest noodle maker, lost 0.7% to $2.89. Wilmar International (WIL SP), the world’s biggest palm-oil trader, dropped 1.2% to $5.97.

Pacific Andes Resources Development (PAH SP): The Hong Kong-based supplier of frozen seafood products said it agreed to buy 28.9 million shares of Tassal Group, a supplier of Atlantic salmon based in Tasmania, Australia, for $67 million. The shares were unchanged at 34 cents.

Stamford Tyres Corp. (STC SP): The Singapore-based retailer and distributor of tires said second-quarter net profit dropped 16% to $1.66 million. The stock fell 1.5% to 32 cents.

Ziwo Holdings (ZIWO.SI), a producer of synthetic rubber, fabric and foamed material, said on Wednesday its patents on a foaming layer for diving suits made from chloroprene rubber, which will last until 2019, had been successfully registered in China.

Singapore-listed Annica Holdings (ANHL.SI) said on Wednesday it had proposed a private placement of 100 million ordinary shares at  $0.032 per subscription share, which represents a discount of 20% to the weighted average price on that trading day.

You are perfectly correct in saying that...

Thus, players are not betting on the company itself...

Rather, they are betting on players' perceptions, period... Smiley

Isn't share price is market estimation of discounted future earnings? the fluctuation of share price has close relation with its fundamental i.e. performance i.e earnings

iPunter      ( Date: 07-Dec-2010 20:12) Posted:

You are absolutely correct in saying that.

No matter how much you pay to buy a company's shares,

the company still functions as a going business entity.

You could have paid, say $0.10, or $2.00 per share for the same amount of shares.

The point is, many have could have paid anything between the two extremes.

The variation in the price of stocks is real.
