A president role who want to perform a check and balance on govt.

A role should be play between ruling PAP and opposition, set of rules that is laid out on the table, rather then for the president for applying into such role.

I don agree to such idea, the idea maybe his and or may come from SDP and or NSP.

This EP has got nothing on how Singapore is to be rule on party political ideology. oneself need to know what is General Election and what is electing a president...

Currently a president is consultative in nature, not a check and balance on govt.

A new role is like to be to able to play a more meaningful role in power of need and to united it people's hope and aspiration.

_________________________________________________________________________

The same as for Tony Tan who said, he don hav to be approve by his boss, the way he act and go about oredi indicated, others wise...

His has yet to explain why he is racing for a powerless president job..?.

Isit a flavour for PAP, for especially for NTUC union old guard, for now is an opportunity to hold on to 2nd key, isit convince enuff to win over the oppostion and united Singaporeans..?.

The scheme that allows elderly and disabled patient patients to see their general practitioners and pay subsidised polyclinic rates will be extended from 65 yrs old to 40 yrs old is too generous. 40 yrs is not considered elderly. It is OK to subsidise for disabled but not 40 yrs old. Since CPF cut comes in at 50, the subsidy could start at 50yrs. If want to be more generous, may be start at 45 yrs (retrenchment age). Tax payers may start to worry about this as this would  NOT  be the last as there are more to come and slowly we will sink like the european countries.

Once during the gulf war, the President of USA , and the Prime Ministers of UK and Singapore were travelling on a warship that was cruising near S.Arabia.

The 3 were talking about how brave their soldiers were their discussion soon turned into an argument where each wanted to prove the bravery of their own soldiers.

The President of USA said, " let me show u what is guts" , whereupon he called his Colonel and said " Jump into the sea and swim 3 rounds around this ship!" .

The Colonel replied " Anything for Uncle Sam, Sir" , jumped into the shark infested sea and swam 3 rounds around the ship, with the sharks chasing him like mad! After the successful 3 rounds, the Colonel came up to the deck and said, " I did it for Uncle Sam Mr. President!" .

The proud US President replied " That's what I call guts!" .

The Prime Minister of UK was pissed. He had to show. He called his 3-star General and said " General, jump into the sea and swim 10 rounds around This ship!" .

The General replied " Anything for the Queen, Sir" , jumped into the shark infested sea and swam 10 rounds around the ship, with the sharks chasing him like gila! (lunatic). After the successful 10 rounds the 3-star General came up to the deck and said, " Long Live the Queen!" .

The proud UK PM replied " That's what I call guts!"

The Prime Minister of Singapore cannot tahan. He had to show that his
soldiers have it too.   He called one of his Private,   Ah Beng and said
" Soldier, jump into the sea and swim 50 rounds around this ship!" .

The Private replied " Oi, you siao (crazy) izzit? I juz bought my condo and I am paying through my nose. Now, U want me to jump and die?   If u want to Hao lian (show off), you jump into the sea yourself ! @#*& %F!........

The Singapore PM grinned and said " Now, that's what I call guts!"

The last May GE resulted - shown as 60.1% for and 39.9% against, voting patten indicated party ideology line for voters prefrence.

This time, a elective presidential post has had nothing to do with how Singapore is to be run.

On top for it. it oni hav to take one, oni one Law Ministry. Mr K.Shanmugan to debunks notions on what president can say.

Can ONLY speak. ONLY as cabinet advised. Can on act as chairman for presidential adivsed.

Following is what voters patten can gather, based on assumption of what is a general election and what is a presidential election is...At stake, is  TT a change man for presidential job..?.

TT (PAP Ex-MP, Ex-Ministry and Ex DPM) - elitees, plus some fatees rich and NTUC old guards (not an endosement by NTUC ordinary folks members)
Note: Dr Tony Tan is widely seen as the Govt’s preferred candidate. It is something he will have to grapple with going into the campaign. who he had been associated with staunch support for 27 years as PAP party cadre member to LKY.

TCB (PAP Ex-MP, 6 terms and is very up front, a presidential hopeful fighter) - West side more vote then east, plus some daftees not happy with TT

TJS (most recently stood for as oppostion MP, was unsuccessful) - right after may 2011 election, now depending on SDP, plus some unhappy voter daftees with V.van

TKL (Once counted to stand as PAP MP candidate and most recently was invited by WP-Mr LKT to give GE May, 2011 speeches) - East side more vote then West, plus some datees unhappy with PAP policy.

In my own personnal opinion. Since lehman and it finance crisis, many hundred, if not thousand had ask TKL to go for d president post. It is oni logical for TKL to move forward, as seen best connected to d people's and giving hope, aspiration and better life for common folks.

Just sharing my thot. Voting for the Honourable Excellency the President.

Choices is yours as many Singaporeans feel about themselves passionately on each politcal belief. Now there are four hopefuls.

How well can presidential hopeful get connected with citizens and capable of unifying Singaporeans.

Result will tell in the night of Aug 27, 2011.

I wishes all four presidential hopeful, all the best.

Income gap  widens. Unaccustomed as it is to opposition, the ruling PAP may have underestimated popular discontent, says Vishnu Varathan, an economist at Capital Economics (Asia) Pte in Singapore.

The Workers’ Party, which won six seats in Parliament (up from one in the 2006 election), called it a watershed election. Some S'poreans went further. Catherine Lim, a best-selling novelist and political commentator, said the electoral landscape had turned toxic for the PAP by the time voters went to the polls. “This election shocked them like no other,” Lim, 69, says.

Meanwhile there will be four presidential hopeful for electing our President.

Then, what is Tony Tan doing to race for the presidential job..?. even if and when 1 2 retire from highest office, it do not mean oneself can collect the highest salary.

" The Singaporean’s paycheck is eight times fatter than Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s"

I was wondering how for a president salary must be more then the PM of Singapore?.

Who has had to carry alot more responsibilities looking after the well being for Singapore to continue to prosper.

teeth53 thot: The role of president cannot do anything, except to collect more money and salary then what PM Lee has had to shoulder alot more responsibilities, in the name of Head of State, president is given all for what a president should receive - all the necessary potocol, respect and all necessary item.

except salary cannot (a sticky matter here), as it is a personnal salary earn (and is not taxable),  that must peg to cabinet advise for what a president can act and speak, and will not, did not be held for anything at all, even act and speak - must speak ONLY as cabinet advised.

Dr Tony Tan knew it from day one.  A Govt “blessing” could end up being, a kiss of political death.

That why...Dr Tony Tan  took pains to pre-emptively allay concerns regarding his independence,

He now want to be seen as independence of LKY for this EP election.

Even without the Govt’s tacit or express endorsement, the reality is...Dr Tony Tan is widely seen as the Govt’s preferred candidate. It is something he will have to grapple with going into the campaign. who he had been associated with  staunch support for 27 years as  PAP party cadre member to LKY.

Independence has become a prominent theme in the lead-up to the presidential election.

All three hopefuls have a PAP background.

Remember that gov said that 1 in 3 are foreign workers. Check for quota from MOM website (see below): May be gov should reduce foreign workers to 1 in 4.

Companies/firms in the\\\ services sector are allowed to employ foreign workers from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea or Macau on Work Permits up to 50% of their total workforce.  Work Permit holders from the PRC can make up to 10% within the 50% dependency ceiling.

With effect from 1 January 2008, the company S Pass quota will be increased  to 25% to help meet industry demand for mid-skilled foreign manpower.  The quota will come entirely from companies' Work Permit quota. This means that companies can employ more S Pass holders, in lieu of Work Permit holders, thereby improving the quality of their foreign workforce.

There is no quota on the number of Employment Pass holders a company can employ.

The Dependency Ratio (DR), i.e. the ratio of the number of full time local workers is to the number of foreign workers, for the Construction and Process sectors is 1: 7. In addition, companies in the construction and process sectors that wish to recruit workers from the Non-Traditional Source (NTS) will have to apply for Man-Year Entitlement (MYE), unless the worker is eligible for a MYE waiver.

Manufacturing companies/firms are allowed to employ foreign workers from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea or Macau on Work Permits up to 65% of the companies’/firms’ total workforce.  Work Permit holders from the PRC can make up to 25% within the 65% dependency ceiling.

The Dependency Ratio (DR), i.e. the ratio of the number of full time local workers is to the number of foreign workers, for the Marine sector is 1: 5. This means that for every one full time local worker, companies in the Marine Sector is entitled to employ up to five Work Permit holders.
