Today, jalan jalan around electronic shops downtown. Indoor TV antennaes are among recent best sellers. Stocks running low, so hurry. These antennas go for only $35 each. Imagine the early bird singtel/starhub subscription costs you $70 and $90 after the early-bird promo. With no risk, your antennae investment already give you a 100% return. If you factor in future world cups in 2014, 2018, where you don't have to pay the telcos, your investment will have turn into multi-baggers.

All the savings we can better use for trading profits. Don't let the telcos fool you with "It's only one dollar a match only mah." Next time round in 2014: "Hey dudes, it's only $2 a match only mah." Please don't forget, we only paid $10 for the 2006 world cup. So, how in the world it becomes $70? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you the telcos screw up and now pass the shit problem to the consumers.

Relax, no offence intended in my comments. I can't wait for the great games to start. So let's all enjoy and not let the mistakes of the telcos spoil our mood.

I am amateur in predicting football scores. So the first match between South Africa and Mexico, should i bet on a 2-2 draw?  any suggestions?

Singtel shares hitting 52 weeks low.

Going back to IPO price of $2.50, which is 20 years ago.

No capital gains even if you hold this stupid blue chip for 20 years.

Although Management cites good dividend of about 5%, factoring inflation, Singtel probably gives ZERO REAL returns after 20 years.

What happened to the management?

Should it be taken out of the STI since it is a lousy performer like Chartered Semiconductor and STAT Chipac?

Singtel, Starhub face revolt

SINGAPORE Telecommunications and StarHub, Singapore's two cable-TV providers, face a protest from more than 20,000 soccer fans after raising fees to watch next month's World Cup sevenfold to the highest in Asia, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

The increase from the previous tournament four years ago, announced May 7, prompted local resident John Chua to rally disaffected fans on a Facebook page, including Kelvin Chan, who plans a public demonstration next month.

Some viewers will instead tune in to free-to-air broadcasts of the games from neighbouring countries, Mr Chua said. 'It's a clear case of exploitation pricing,' he said in an e-mail. 'They have no concern for the public even under this economy crisis and think that we will pay regardless.'

SingTel and StarHub paid $15 million for the rights, triple the amount StarHub paid in 2006, a report said on May 1, citing people it didn't identify. The two companies declined to say how much they paid because of confidentiality agreements.

Mr Chan plans to organise a demonstration at Speakers' Corner, a venue allocated for public protests, pending government approval, he said in an e-mail, Bloomberg said. The Facebook protest group, which had 20,600 members as of Wednesday, was formed two days after SingTel and StarHub said they will charge existing subscribers $70.62 if they sign up by May 31, or $94.16 thereafter to watch the month-long tournament that starts June 11 in South Africa. For the 2006 World Cup, StarHub charged early subscribers $10.50.

Bloomberg reported that Mr Chua's group plans to print t-shirts that say 'I choose not to subscribe,' and red cards that say 'You're Off! SingTel, StarHub,' mimicking the cards referees use to eject soccer players for foul play.

'I didn't expect such a strong response,' Mr Chua said. 'I am very proud that everybody is standing united against something that is wrong.'

im going out to buy a good antenna. point it south as recommend. hope SCTV gives good signal to singapore fans.

im prepared to pay more than the singtel/starhub package in exchange for a good antenna. some might ask why i so silly. just subscribe and enjoy every game at no more than $1 per match. Those people who call me silly dont understand the meaning of principle. IT's not the spending more to get a good antenna that's at stake. IT's our principle, our value, what we stand for.

Thank you SCTV. Boos to starhub, singtel, media devt authority (mda or my dear ass for doing a poor job that lead to this fiasco), and #@%* fifa.

Probably Opening & QF onwards.  I will check again.

Malaysian pay $28 to watch all 64.

Indonesia confirm free 64 at SCTV.  Just point the antenna to the south......

I boycott and not subscribing. However, have to find another way to watch it free. Anyone out there knows a neat, convenient mean to watch good quality footballs free? Let me know what minimum hardwares needed to setup.

Thanks.

This World Cup is tainted with a kelong by France and now overtaken by greed, so it is of no significance to true soccer aficionados.  It is like junk bond status, almost worthless.  I would not pay a single cent for this World Cup.

Boycott, unity is strength. Do the telcos get more revenue from commercial of private individual ? If it is individual, then boycott will show fifa that sporean cannnot be taken for a ride.
