I think MP will be better position for a start. The reasons are as follows:
1. Remember, the one and only contested P election, OTC vs Chong.....(ex Accountant General), results of the ballot was delayed till about 6 am the next day......cos of recounting....cannot understand why recounting took so long for a relatively simple 1 on 1 contest.....I let you draw your own conclusions.....eventually OTC won. Then in the last P election, the establishment used the full force of their arsenal to crush the other candidate. As it was not a GE, they were able to focus all their effort to get him to reconsider. Electibility will be a problem.
2. P pay is about $3.7m per year plus all the trappings of the office........MP allowance is $11.7k. I am not saying that TKL will fall for the $$$ and the trappings and fail in his duties as P but lets not put temptation in his way .....at least till he has proven himself as a MP for the people.
3. The platform of the P is somewhat limited......remember when OTC queried parliament about the finances, the whole establishment....including the civil service (who is suppose to be non partisan) shut the doors on him....and he spent the rest of his term in relative solitude and a lame duck. The platform as a MP is quite unlimited......parliament sittings, blogs, constituency news, press (not the SPH ones) etc. He will be a good addition to the likes of LTK and CST.

My personnal tot as an MP, and with many among MPs, will be shot down, but as President, he hold the key, still remember former Presicent Ong, someone with powerful voice, he also had to talk with restraints when talk to like Li kun yu, think our Li is sometime "Hui Yea Lio Yea Hoo Too" n those surrounded one oso very blurrr...worker, put in many billion n lost the bid n said it is for long, long term investment, somemore said 15% -25% pay cut, so bluur like sotoooo oredi somemore know how to cut their own pay, where got meaning...?. without vision as there is many warning sign available since 2 nad 3Q of 2007. Following "Hui Yea Lio Yea Hoo Too" syndrome is even more bluurrr n more out of place, that Y i believe that Y we lost near 40 Bil..so fa |

It does not matter, whether P or MP, whichever election comes first, vote TKL in to check.
We've had opposition MPs, NMPs. It wouldn't make any difference if u add another one. We will need alot more to change the political landscape in Singapore.TKL is already 60. How long n how much more has he to offer?
Presidency to safe guard the reserves would be a better bet. They are already using surpluses from last year reserves. Who is to stop the establishment from dipping their hands into the reserves. With his credentials in finance, he would be a perfect fit for this role. The boom and bust cycles have shortened and is likely to stay that way in the foreseeable future.

Strongly agree with shplayer.
If Mr Tan has all it takes to be a MP, go for it. Being an MP you could bring your visions and people's wishes to P'ment and fight for the good of Singapore. I feel that he is sincere and would make a good MP.
I think the P is the best retirement option - All you need is to come out once awhile to smile and wave at people and to shake hands and give some speeches. Cheers!

i'd rather he be an MP than a President, since presidents here are just consitutional heads of states. It is MPs who can effect REAL change.
factoid of interest: he takes the MRT to work everyday, just like us.
let it be put on record that i'm one of the little haybees who'd sign to be one of the 100,000 voting for him.
so he has 99,999 names more to go.
anyone else????

Dun play play, orang ini still water runs deep loh.
If a person by the "name" of siewkhim (i think this name was also seen in this forum) could attack TKL in the handling of NTUC (insurance ?) bonus being cut by the new CEO where TKL backout (in sk's perception), I think he is also vulnerable. You can read more in TKL blog under NTUC......
the machine was built by Chief Engineer ... u need a powerful engineer to unscrew some and add his own vision/version to it ... until then we can just tweak a dial here or a knob there ... but the machine is still intact ...
With such vision, at least to help plug a few more hole, to delay the boat from sinking, just my tot.
he testing RC, come CC then NC, well all thd CCC, think he has got root support He did mentioned in his blog from day one, he is against Lehman products. isit he got vision to tell something is not right.
He is no ordinary people. No lah..he is helping this present estabishment n not anti estabishment, he has been given more space then i expected by the news paper , somemore headlines news leh, Y so as news paper also is control by..err news paper mah, (U n i all knew who control) no need to worry too much..testing in trouble water n see the silver lining..come a saver..haha :))

53, I think he is against this (for eg, casino) but it is the younger generation are more "gung-ho" attitude. The way they lost money in Indonesia, Thailand (in 1997) and US (in 2008) shows their thinking. I hope they are aware that they cannot play with US as seen here http://www.rense.com/general52/secretsoftheplunge.htm (copied from elfin's blog).
I am worry for TKL as they will find ways to remove/silent him. Look at NKF (are there other hidden reasons) and the monk. Human are not perfect, all you need is to dig out some dirt and splash on. Politics are diry. Look at Anwar (Hei eat Hei). |

In times like this which is likely to drag for quite a while, the presidency would be our best bet to ensure that our reserves are safe. He will definitely have my vote.

about the financial debacle.... looking at it objectively ... the boat will rise or fall with the tide ... what has the captain got to do with it ? ... unless the captain got insider information of the low tide but kept on going with the course ...or is it only our boat got into such a situation while others are on the high ground .... and we read citibank's shares could be thrown off the funds etc if it keeps below $5 ...adding to possible further downslide ....i'm also blur ..blur ... hahaha !

true, true. but humans make the system. and too many of one type in any system would inevitably lead to failure. it's nature: the convergent principle works when things are going well; but in situations of change, divergency is required.
I still prefer a good system than individuals. Individuals are human beings and they can fail. Just 1 failure is enough to wipe out everything, so a good system is essential.

More so as he is qualified..he is seen n has somewhat...? some backup...if not why is he given so much space to....Err not a another parties ticket...but as a next coming people's President..A real posibility as 1st step in taking to test the water.....by publishing in ST paper headlines somemore..Ya

i think tan kin lian is more suited to be president than an MP. He has good financial knowledge which is key to guarding the reserves and he is able to connect with the common people too. but I'll vote for him whether he stands for president or MP (Worker's Party ticket)! |
