STOCKS NEWS SINGAPORE-Myanmar loss not a bad thing for SingTel - Maybank
Singapore Telecommunications Ltd's failure to win a licence in  Myanmar  could turn out to be a boon as it will not have to commit huge investment in an opaque regulatory environment, said Maybank Kim Eng. " We believe this is a better outcome for SingTel as it will not have to spend billions for a long-dated result, but now have the opportunity to work with the winners to help them build out the necessary infrastructure, thus ensuring positive returns almost immediately," Maybank said in a research note.
Myanmar  awarded two telecommunications services licences to Norway's Telenor and Qatar's Ooredoo, and picked the partnership of France's Orange and Japan's Marubeni Corp as a back-up.
SingTel, the worst performer among Straits Times Index components on Friday, dropped as much as 1.6 percent to S$3.66, before paring some losses to S$3.70.
Maybank upgraded SingTel to " hold" from " sell" with the target price pegged at S$3.50.
Yoma Strategic Holdings, which was a part of Digicel-led consortium to bid for one of the two Myanmar licences, lost as much as 6.8 percent to a two-week low of S$0.895.
Just down by 3 cents.
No need to sad lah.......

Myanmar is like sucking the $$ from the foreign investors..better for singtel to stay out till the dust has settled.
With only 2 operators awarded, there will probably be further chances in the near future when the basic infrastructure is in place...lower risk for Singtel
It laws n regulation that is man made, so is as always subject to newer laws and regulation to protect their national securites and local interest.

Take a look at Thais telecom industries n one can hav an idea how it work.
Myanmar is one up and even more on nationa comel interest first.

IMHO, the outcome will not have too direct an impact on Singtel's performance.Investors need to think long term instead of a knee jerk reaction to the contract loss.
Because essentially, Singtel is not relying on the deal to drive or sustain its business performance. It could have been an icing on the cake but on the other hand, it is risk mitigated. Singtel can perhaps focus on other sectors/countries now.
" Experts are quick to point out, however, that while the potential returns for the winners of Thursday's bid are staggering, so are the risks.Investors preparing to invest billions of dollars are rightly nervous about how political reform will evolve, whether the government can maintain the fragile peace between ethnic groups, and how regulation and ownership rights will develop. The government insists a new industry regulator will take over within the next few years, but the job is still effectively in the hands of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. A telecom bill to set the legal framework for the industry is stuck in parliament." Foreign companies " will be entering the market while the process is still taking place and major reforms are yet to happen," said Peter Evans, a senior analyst at the telecom research group, BuddComm.
