Creative Technology Ltd, the Singapore-based manufacturer of MP3 players and other consumer electronic devices, said Monday it will incur an operating loss in the third quarter to March due to higher operating expenses arising from the weaker US dollar.
Sales are also expected to come in below target at about 150 million US dollars, compared with 262.2 million dollars in the previous quarter.
But Creative said it still expects to achieve a net profit for the quarter as it recognizes exceptional gain from investments of about 20 million dollars. It did not provide a net profit estimate.
The gain will primarily come from the sale of its headquarters building in Singapore for 180 million dollars. Under the deal, the building will be leased back to Creative for five years.
Creative expects to book a gain of about 144 million dollars from the sale, which will be recognized over the five-year lease term.

DJ Creative: To Report 3Q Oper Loss On Higher Operating Expenses
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Singapore's Creative Technology Ltd. (C76.SG) Monday said it will report a third-quarter operating loss on higher expenses from currency rates.
Creative, in a filing to the Singapore Exchange, said its expected revenue for the three months ending March 31 will be below target at US$150 million.
"Operating expenses will be above the Company's original target primarily due to the impact of the currency exchange rates, and the Company will report an operating loss for the quarter," Creative said in a statement.
The company said it still expects to achieve overall profitability for the quarter.
In a separate announcement, Creative said it signed a memorandum of understanding for a sale and leaseback of the building that houses its corporate headquarters for S$250 million (US$180 million).
Creative said it expects to make a gain on sale of about S$200 million (US$144 million) for the property. The sale is expected to be completed by end of June, it said.
The company didn't disclose the buyer.

Are BBs buying into Creative? How come keep going up?
This counter has rally quite a lot in these few days.
Thanks for the explanation. Let's see if Creative's management can turn around this ailing dinosaur.
apparently analysts think it's quite a good set of result beating their revenue and profit expectation. Also, the prospect of new income stream with their new conferencing product which received good rating at recent at CES show. Besides, analysts see that the co. is working towards it's earlier promise to strengthen it's balance sheet.
What caused the rise today? The share buy back?
EastonBay, thank you for correcting me , 2 points, one is US dollars, and the other one is the one-time payment from Apple..
Jackjames, Creative's no. are denominated in US$... i.e. they bought back their shares at avg US$4.35 <> @ say 1.45 (the x-change rate 2nd qtr last yr), roughly S$6.30.
Not sure if that will change because previously it was listed in NYSE. No longer now.
