The powers to be here from the garmen to SMRT to SBS are not very clever in cutting cost. They are following the American style of spending, spending and more spending. This is to make the economy turn, otherwise if nobody is spending, then all the factories will close down and all of us become jobless. Its very easy to run a business like bus transprt here. When they cannot make enough profit, they just request for fare increase. If I am not wrong, they have not been refused yet.

The Australian garmen is cutting cost by passing law to regulate using low energy light bulbs instead of incandescent filament bulbs. It is also a green campaign. Here we are putting more and more lights everywhere, to make our country more vibrant at night!!.

The CPF was started as a pension fund so that when one retires, he/she can have money to buy food to survive. Then comes the smart guy who devised a plan to dig out some money to buy HDB flats, followed by smarter guys who suggest buying shares and then medical insurance, etc...

The AH Pek who has survived all this bleeding and are lucky to have 40K remaining got better ideas. They withdraw all their money, went to Batam, bought a house in "mistress village", got married to a sweet seventeen Indo girl and lived happily for one or two years. When there is no more money left, they got kicked out of Batam, came home and reported to the family court here that their children are not supporting them in old age.

Well, life goes on isn't it??.

Another dose of pragmatism on the cards.  Ministers' take home pay to go up!  GST gone up to fund this???

On the surface, Khaw appears to be knight in shining armour, but think again, people.  Think hard.  From the time you inhale your first to the time you exhale your last it is a no-win game.  But then, is there another alternative?

Vic, once again you are spot on!  We'd be at FJ outlet talking about these interesting issues, shares included.  Haha  By the way, how did the meeting go last night?  I'll catch up with you next week.

another point about import. Don't always look at the pessimistic side... Mr Khaw is a good example of 1st class import.. think he hails from Malaysia.. even to this day we can hear his Malaysian chinese accent whenever he speaks in Mandarin. One thing though, he and many others in the cabinet and MPs are considered the older generation who truly call Singapore home. Not sure about the new imports nowadays.

chinkiasu: "..re MM on the job... he keeps telling us that his databank is very useful, I think the problem with that is that it means there is only one databank for Singapore... and it becomes irreplaceable... and there will be no alternatives.... so I say"

Go alternatives databank lah... literally "in-house" training... databank can passed down "in-house", and that provide a little continuity...

agree with you Victorian, sir... except that I think the word pragmatism gives the impression that it is a good thing..  I am afraid, it is pragmatic in so far as "for the sake of my own going up the bureaucratic ladder, it is certainly wise to follow the one databank... to come up with anything else too risky, afterall so long I follow the system, do no wrong I gona get promoted...."

afterall, we see the example set by Mr Ngiam (former PS Finance & protegy of Mr Hon Sui Sen - my hero) who as a true Singaporean who dared to voice out, but what does it get him.. he is classified as "senile" even at 65 years old... Jabba the Hut

Yah... Mr. Khaw is one guy I really respect. He helped Singapore out of the SARS crisis.

BTW, hahaha...Assistant Director rank in the civil service isn't a very senior position. If I'm not wrong, in some stat boards and ministries, freshies ususally start off at Senior Officer position and then the next grade is already Assistant Director. So at best, their rank in the private sector is like Senior Executive or Assistant Manager.

victorian: urs experience is nothing new. Scholars are blessed in Spore. However we do have to give credit when it's due. Mr Khaw is one example of fighting for medical and hospitalisation benefits for Singaporeans. However his idea although good for citizen but means govt need fork out extra more monies. So unless we vote him in again else I suspect due to his too generous policy will get rotated out.

Entertainment is one of the daily expenses. It is not easy to manage money. A balance must strike between Income and Expenses.

yes lausk22, it looks that way, hedonistic society is where we are heading for..the Singapore we know will go away, and so it would be not more....  and also, there is now no more caring for those that vote with their feet,  now SM Goh shruggs his shoulders when he comes to talk about Singapore leaking talent. "The issue which we are most concerned with is the loss of our own people at the very top," said Mr Goh. "These are bright young people, children of very well educated Singaporeans.", but he says replace the 0.5% singapore lost talents with imported ones

"That was why Singapore, too, has had to turn to talented people from other countries, get them to work here and eventually turn them into Singaporeans. That was the only way to ensure that Singapore's population "peak" would remain at a high level, said Mr Goh. "

Seriously, can we really get the same quality? or are we gona get the second rates who come to Singapore only because they are rejected by other countries,  and are they gona stay for long..)  not a word about how to keep the singaporeans but the easy way out of importing &  increasing population..Sigh big sigh....

and re MM on the job... he keeps telling us that his databank is very useful, I think the problem with that is that it means there is only one databank for Singapore... and it becomes irreplaceable... and there will be no alternatives.... so I say..Butt.

Sound like you have plenty of information on the unfriendly elderly policies. Perhaps the evolution of our society can be described thus:

Socialism to Capitalism to Utilitarianism - so created a society that worships Hedonism ?

Hi Ipunter, Working for the military is not that flexi. One elderly singing instructor did not continue in his post even though he was offered by the military.

Tanglinboy, to add to your post.......... well one doesn't necessarily have to have any military experience to still be in full control of almost everytthing.  But make sure one's sons (or at least one of them!) still has control over the military........Sir, yes Sir.....

renewal is a good thing... a military leader who has been in control for too long may get overblown ego and start to have funny ideas....
