hi Choohian sorry to have stirred you out of hibernation... I thot you might be around  so a little encouragement to join the fun... (btw small point, if sporeguy translates niama in cantonese: it should  "your mother", and not "your grandmother"..  but anyway.. we are so champok in our dialects & language.. anything also can lah.. but just that the essence of what are trying to say comes across...no, I know you would not be easily "blush" and that is exactly my point to describe RT's language which incidently I find quite cute..(certainly not offensive..)

but the reason for my post is to give another translation to 1402's post in the SPC thread: 

1) the SPC chairman's aim is acquisition in a wise manner that will have the best chance to give share holder's better profit in the medium term  i.e good prospects (have some good indications of striking oil in profitable quatities) rather than anyhow spend money blindly prospect 

2) he did not say he is not interested in growing their refinery biz ( in fact they did announced recently that they are upgrading their refinery to give wider range of down stream products & this will be done in the next few months): refinery has traditionally been their strongest profit grower and they are continuing their efforts to protect this cash cow..)

all in all, a responsible management and board that will deliver good steady divvys and yet spending some money wisely to do upstream activities which will give even better returns..

 

ipunter, in my case, my "definitions" of BBs are the institutional players and not the china people.. coz had come across a article saying something like institutional plays are in place "to stabilise" the market.. bt for the huge number of china people, can the BBs withstand their panic selling.. this is a concern now, we will be able to see BBs (institutional players) vs china people.. (i did not use any terms to "represent china people as they can be considered as BBs as a whole, or retail player as an individual)

When it comes to China, the real big boys are the masses...

Since the poplulation is 'radically' different from other countries, the masses can virtually be their own big boys.

Never belittle a behemoth... ie the small boys...

 

BBs in actions for china counters.. reversing from a low of 3404.15 to current 3676.23 (-5+ pts)... bt can the BBs "withstand" the impact of the china people? got a feeling that sti might be a lagging indicator, if china will to rebound, sti might dip (imo)...

with regards to 1402's post in the SPC thread: in simple english:

1) the chairman's aim is acquisition: ie, short term costs will go up (bad for share px)

2) looking for potential oil targets (a big question mark: will strike gold if find viable oil source, if not, it's just money spent.)

3) not so interested in growing their refinery biz (damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario: refinery has traditionally been their strongest profit grower--less emphasis on this = bad. but even if they do so, there's greater competition in the refinery biz as well. ie, long term, this is a sunset industry/steady industry. which possibly explains why they're taking a risk by venturing into oil exploration instead.)

all in all, not a rosy picture.

qualification: only my interpretation of the chairman's msg. i know there are a lot of rabid SPC supporters out there. don't kill the messenger, or in this case, the translater, hor. haha.
