A three-day partial shutdown of rail services on Hong Kong Island begins tonight amid warnings of potential chaos if any breakdowns occur over the next 18 months - as the MTR Corporation apologised for four disruptions in the past three days.
Trains between Admiralty and Sheung Wan are being suspended until early on Monday to allow for work to link the Island Line to the under-construction West Island Line.
But the construction work also means the closure of a siding at Sheung Wan into which broken-down trains are usually shunted. MTR Corporation has warned that this could lead to longer-than-usual delays in the case of breakdowns, like one that left 2,400 commuters stranded as smoke bellowed from a train at Wan Chai on Wednesday.
After the siding's closure any train that suddenly stops at Central or Sheung Wan will have to be taken to Admiralty instead.
" The MTR has got to be very sensitive now," Central and Western district councillor Cheng Lai-king said yesterday.
" If anything happens at Central or Sheung Wan, it must order an immediate evacuation at Admiralty as well - it would be a key buffer."
Shuttle buses will replace trains between Admiralty and Sheung Wan for the next three days.
MTR chief operations engineer Morris Cheung Siu-wa, meanwhile, apologised on a radio programme for the four incidents that included two breakdowns, a signal failure and a platform door malfunction.
" I know there have been some incidents recently that affected our service to the public, so please let me say sorry to our fellow passengers," Cheung said, rejecting suggestions from workers that staff shortages were to blame.
He said a power failure triggered by " problems of in-train electrical appliances" caused the Island Line breakdown, while a similar incident at Tai Wai the same day was blamed on problems with the installation of wires during an overhaul of the train.
On Monday a signal failure disrupted Tung Chung station, and the following day new platform screen doors at Kowloon Bay broke. At least a dozen other incidents have been reported on the MTR this year.
Legislator Andrew Cheng Kar-foo blamed the government.
" The government never exerts a lot of pressure on the MTR," said Cheng, chairman of the Legislative Council's transport panel.
Transport sector lawmaker Miriam Lau Kin-yee said the MTR had not yet given legislators a report on cracks in lines found earlier this year.
Cheung said trains that ran on the first MTR line in 1979 were still running today without a breakdown, and as the system was regularly renewed there were no safety concerns. But Cheng asked: " If the MTR doesn't have any problem, as it claims, why are there constant incidents?"
An MTR spokesman said last night that trains breaking down in Central and Sheung Wan would take longer to handle over the next 18 months. But he said more manpower would be assigned to monitor the Island Line and the company would seek help from other public transport operators in an emergency.

the operation cost increased more than the ridership incoming.  I think must raise fare than can help the stock.... but public wont like it for sure. :)

Recently SMRT many people has several bad experience with SMRT.
1) Train Fault - which require all passengers to alight at the next station. Oh yes and it did happened in a few occasion recently during the peak hours. Passenger has to wait for next 2-3 train at least before they can continue their journey.
2) Air-Con not working ? Just imagine the train is pack with people and the air con is not working... eek.
3) Sudden Brake of the train ? Anything wrong with the train, track or the staff?
Seriously I think SMRT has some problems internally..... There is no quality in its services anymore... Whats going on in Singapore? Its not like this few years back.

SMRT: may see some interest after the Transport Minister announced that the Circle Line (CCL) extension will open on 14 Jan next yr, ahead of mkt expectations.
The extension comprises a new station at Bayfront and will connect CCL to the existing N-S Line at Marina Bay station. The 2 additional CCL stations are expected to serve the integrated resort (MBS) and the new Int’l Cruise Terminal.
Deutsche highlights that it recently upgraded SMRT to a non-consensus Buy (TP $2.21), on expectations that CCL ridership growth will surprise on the upside. Notes its view is supported by its own ridership checks which showed a surge in CCL commuter flows post opening of stages 4 and 5. Believes that the worst of SMRT’s operational challenges are largely behind. Says, while valuations (at 19x FY12E P/E) are not cheap, the expected operational turnaround, consequently robust earnings growth and defensive 4-5% dividend yield are key differentiators.
SMRT Corp: the RSI is oversold
Our pivot point stands at 1.82.
Our preference: the downside prevails as long as 1.82 is resistance.
Alternative scenario: the upside breakout of 1.82 would call for 1.87 and 1.9.
Comment: the RSI is trading below 30. This could mean that either the stock is in a lasting downtrend or just oversold and that therefore a rebound could shape (look for bullish divergence in this case). The MACD is negative and below its signal line. The configuration is negative. Moreover, the share stands below its 20 and 50 day MA (standing respectively at 1.83 and 1.81). SMRT Corp is currently trading near its 52 week low at 1.68 reached on 11/08/11.

nowadays, many things are measured by money. but sevice standard has dropped.
when you ask the bus driver(chinachinese) in english about the station. he just hands to you a bus station list and let you read by yourself, of course this action is approved by sbs.
In some attraction sectors, you encounter some mishandling due to its system, you ask you staff, they said" I am just a part timer" I don't know, they tried to avoid your query and walked away. when the manager came, he said, anything talked to me, don't BOTHER  my staff............and it's in the nite safari..
smrt, there is no enough video commercial to educate what is moving in to the rear. stay straight(saw people stand at spot A and slant  it's body and hold the hook at spot B)  , not lean on the pole, stand on the left on escalator etc. when crowded    and stupid reserved seat for the needy reflects the ugly sides of the society here. It says, pregnant, crippling(old age), baby or very young toddlers.
The younger ones and those indian and china immigrants(used to have hard time grabbing a space in their public tpt), once they gotten it, they wont care about giving up the seats(many times I saw). there again, sometimes, those complaint about seats not given up to them , I wonder if they are really so old or that young toddlers who cant handle standing for a while.
govt no longer singing let make singapore a gracious society. and worst PM Goh said singapore has become a more gracious society than before. does having more rich and making HDB a semi public and condo design(more chic)  qualify that .  Wonder  how the announcement based on.
I am glad I am yet to experience the air con break down in  SMRT.but I think it will still  get the biz as what other choice we have.
When a biz is good, the staff forget about the EQ  service. and many attractions the top management hardly come to the front line to study the situation, therefore, the poor EQ/system still remain...........

SMRT is giving dividend rate of close to 5% against it's latest pricing, which i personally find that it's good enough.  Furthermore it is expanding and ridership will maintain or even increase  in relation with  population increase.

I respect all SMRT shareholders  . I attended 2009 SMRT AGM. All directors and shareholders were very committed in improving service standard in expenses of shareholders' interest.
Surprisingly no one care about their earning (dividend). I feel so ashame. And I knew that I couldn't become one of them. I invest for profit.
I sold all my SMRT share.  |

Faulty cable led to Circle Line disruption

An SMRT train (file photo)
SINGAPORE: A faulty cable beneath the platform level at Dakota Station caused a power fault on Tuesday morning that affected train services at all 16 stations on the Circle Line.
In a statement to the media, SMRT said it is investigating the power fault that caused the more than four—hour service breakdown and is checking through the system as a precaution.
About 26,600 passengers were affected by the incident and SMRT said it apologised for the inconvenience caused.
Passengers who were unable to complete their journeys due to the train disruption on Tuesday morning on the Circle Line can file a claim for refund.
SMRT said commuters can claim their refund at any SMRT station within the next three working days.

GPC for Transport calls for more security audits on train operator SMRT
The Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport has called for more security audits on train operator SMRT.
This after it was hit by a second breach at its depots yesterday (Wed 17/8), following a similar incident at a different depot last May.
Joanne Chan has more.
A breach in the fence was discovered at the Bishan train depot.
A worker involved in the repairs said the breach happened near Sungei Kallang.
" You know the big long-kang (drain) there, stadium that side.
" (How big was the hole?) I think half metre by one metre. I think the man can go inside."
SMRT says it's been implementing enhanced security measures since late last year, including installing CCTVs and having more security patrols.
However, the latest incident occurred at a location where upgrading works to the security measures were " being scheduled" says SMRT.
Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law, Michael Palmer said the second break-in means SMRT is not trying hard enough and that " we're lucky the consequence of the breach is only graffiti."
He added that " a more serious accident is waiting to happen unless more serious and concerted security measures are implemented in a more timely manner" .
GPC Deputy Chair for Transport, Seng Han Thong, agrees.
" If any vandal can penetrate this way, they can do greater harm if they want to.
" We are really pressing SMRT to come up with the answer, why it happened and how can you ensure us that it won't happen again. And we really want the LTA to have stringent check, audit check on each measure and set a time line."
Singaporeans are also calling for SMRT to beef up security.
" They still have to learn from it and have to implement measures at all the depots instead of just one."
" They need to increase the number of patrols and have more security measures."
The Land Transport Authority also had strong words for SMRT, saying it will not hesitate to take the train operator to task if investigations showed that the operator did not comply with the necessary security standards.
