China Cosco Group:
SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co. said Monday that a national audit conducted last year found accounting irregularities at the shipping giant from 2001 to 2009, but it has rectified some of the issues and doesn''t anticipate any material impact on its past earnings.
China''s National Audit Office said in a statement Friday that it uncovered improper accounting procedures at the state-owned company, also known as China Cosco Group, which is the parent of China Cosco Holdings Co. (1919.HK) and Cosco Corp. (F83.SG).
The accounting irregularities were uncovered in a national audit of some high profile state-owned enterprises, including China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (CHU), CNOOC Ltd.(0883.HK), and Aluminum Corp. of China (2600.HK).
The audit of the shipping group found that it under-reported revenue, cost, and provisions for asset impairment, and underpaid taxes due to improper revenue filings, the audit office said.
A spokesman from China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co., who declined to be named, told Dow Jones Newswires said that the group has fixed some of the issues and is in the process of rectifying the remaining irregularities.
Like other state-owned Chinese companies, China''s shipping giants have complex, opaque shareholding structures. However, many investors overlook these factors and instead focus on the Chinese market''s enormous growth potential.

BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Some irregularities and disciplinary violations were found in the financial statements of 17 Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) for the 2009 fiscal year, according to audit reports released by the National Audit Office (NAO) on Friday.
By March this year, 735 cases of irregularities have been corrected and 65 people responsible for the irregularities or violations have been punished, said the office.[Meaning case is settled]
Last year, the NAO audited the financial statements of 17 centrally-administered SOEs, including CNOOC, CHALCO, COSCO and China Unicom, mostly for the 2009 fiscal year.
Assets worth about 1.9 billion yuan (292.4 million U.S. dollars) and profits of 2.63 billion yuan were overstated in the financial statements of those SOEs, while 3.43 billion yuan in liabilities were falsely included, according to the NAO reports.
Also, profits of 1.2 billion yuan, assets worth 2.9 billion yuan and liabilities of 2.5 billion yuan were undercounted, according to NAO.
Furthermore, owners' equities worth 2.07 billion yuan were not calculated in financial statements.
