Your points are all right and good....
but obviously we are vibrating at different parts of the spectrum ...

I am talking about the human side and human nature in the jungle of life...,

not specific instances like this particular case in point...

Hope  you get the point... Smiley

Dear fairygal,

A share consolidation is the opposite of a share split.

Each shareholder's shares are replaced with a smaller number of shares with a higher par value. If a shareholder has a 1,000 shares with a par value of 10p, then after a 1 for 2 consolidation the shareholder will have 500 shares with a par value of 20p.

hope the above helps.....

hey Mani.. I think fairygal maybe having migrane becos of other reasons...  I think she enjoys the sharemarket... perhaps even reduce her migrane problems particularly when her stock rises....ha ha

manikamaniko, (aiyoh, this name is so long to type... why can't you stick to Ipunter..) can I call you mani?

I think you missed my point, I think we are talking about two sides of the same coin...  I am the friend who would not accept that 50% of the cut in price.  becos I am already taking $$ from my employer who has already paid me for my work... the "perk" is not meant to be payment in kind because other wise the taxman will come after me...it is meant as advertisement for the company... I will have friends whom I will tell / promote that the product is good etc...

however from your perspective you are just being fair to the friend... but that is your perogative... I am saying that if i am that friend I would not be able to accept your offer of the "split".... my request would be that you help promote the product..

Fairygal... :)

Investment should be a pleasurable activity...

If you get migraine because of stock market matters, then you should not be in the stock market at all... Smiley

hahaha ....   na li, na li...

This is a principle I follow strictly and also expect others to do so,

(although altruism can be a very pleasurable thing to do at times, human nature tends to be selfish)...

I suppose one's genuine spirituality does have a lot to do with such principles... Smiley

You are absolutely right there what you say about friends and being a friend...

But that reasoning should also be reversed for absolute fairness when it comes to
something tangible like $$$.

This is why self-imposition and moral insistence is necessary by the one seeking the benefit,
because friends will usually feel 'paisay' (in varying degrees) to accept the morally sound
goodwill gesture....

And for the same reasons, this idea should well be extended to the area of 'love' too... Smiley

Hi manikamaniko, you raised an interesting point...

personally if I am in a position to get staff price goods which I don't need, I would find it very difficult to profit from it by selling it to a friend for two reasons: one, I am getting additional income that is not meant for me, and two, the friend I sell to becomes a customer and not a friend...

(by making the above two statement there are issues here and we can debate it if you like but for the moment I just make the statement...)

It's good if one has friends who can buy @ staff price for us...

Personally, if I were to ask this of a friend (ie. buy @ staff price)...
as a matter of strong personal principle, I would certainly insist that my friend
take half of the total discount to be fair to him/her.

This must be a self-imposed condition, since people usually want to gain but not give.

However, this would only be feasible if that friend does not need the item at all.

singaporegal, there's an easy way. During the IT/PC shows (as mentioned it comes every quarter) when the best bargains are offered, these big IT companies ACER, HP, Hitachi, Dell, will all advertise in the newspaper. Armed with that price info, you just go to shops in Sim Lim sq, show them the adverts and they will match the price for you, sometimes  at a lower price because they want your biz. That's how I get my best bargain without having to squeeze with people. Hope that helps!

Also, as mentioned, if you have friends working in HP and DELL, staff get reallly good discount. My HP laptop was purchased with help of my friend working in HP, at more than 25% off listed price. Comes with standard guarantee.

hi singaporegal, ya you can get better bargain at Sim Lim than Funan but I have not been to Sim Lim a long time. I generally prefer to browse at Funan but recently I went they were doing some upgrading work. IT shows are the best to get good bargains in terms of price and freebies, especially the last day. I prefer if they hold it at expo but this coming one will be at suntec, definitely crowded. I would normally have a model in mind before I go, as most of the time those student sales staff cannot provide good information, only to close deal ;p

hi  Singaporegal... good to see you here..

I look at Sim Lim as a place that you can bargain while at Funan they would frown at you if you try to bargain...  I use to go to Sim Lim but now a days I shop at Funan - I find the shopping experience more relax and at least some chance to view the items, and the salesppl to tell you their features....

the best bargain I find is to wait for the IT Expos but then it is a very rowdy affair, the recent one at Suntec city is absolutely crazy..  being the kiasu that I am, I reached there sharp at 12 noon on its opening day only to find there are already tens of thousand ppl already there...  it was so packed that I cannot get close to the counters I wanted .. on top of that there are other promoters shouting their sales into their amplifier sets tune to max, my ear drums really hurt....  I left after 15 mins completely stunned....

my suggestion re getting the best price for a computer...?  I will do it this way.. first go to Challenger in Funan.. there you get an idea of what is on offer & a good look at the different note books, then  I go to the other shops having narrowed down the range, to the  select shops..  I could also make a trip to mustaffa to see their prices...  then perhaps to Sim Lim to bargain it down even more once I am firmly fixed in the exact model I am interested in....

Hi RT,

Yah... I experienced some problem last night also. But it was ok since this morning.

BTW, can anyone tell me the difference between the shops in Funan and Sim Lim? I am looking for a new computer and where is the best place to buy at a bargain?

Yes, U1010 caught my eye too the first time they appeared on Digital time (either last week or the week before). I think they have not decided on the retail price. It gets good review for it's portability and appearance. Functionality is only SO SO, because it's a hybrid. Good choice to wait for the show, late august, early sept. The Weekend before school's one week holiday.
