The shocking effects of being single.

Reasons why being single not only sucks, but is a terrible idea

iStock

iStock

SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw declared that being single meant that you were “pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with.” But we totally disagree. If you are in a relationship and thinking of dumping your other half then make sure you read this first before going through with it. If you are single, then we suggest that you close your eyes, because we take a look at the negative effects of being single. So forget the fun and games; being single is totally rubbish.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Pole dancing with Ris Low - does she have talent?

The 20-year-old gets pretty real about her talent, why she got her hands onto the exotic sport, and the reasons she refuses to pole dance for her boyfriend

Text and Photos: Joyce J. Chansingh
Video: Ang Peiyi

Ris Low

Bad press courted her, fame captivated her, and pole dancing impressed her.

So, can Ris Low pole dance?

Yes, but apparently not good enough to impress the producers of Channel 5's talent reality show One Moment of Glory (OMG!).

The controversial media darling was initially part of the talent show's plan - to have her perform alongside two pole-dancing contestants in one of the upcoming episodes titled Collaborations!, where contenders will be paired with a personality to showcase their talents.

And from the performances, judges would then have to decide if the contestants make it through to the next level [of challenge] or get the boot.

Now, surely such a provocative dance sequence by the ex-beauty queen, gripping onto a 6-7 feet steel pole, would help boost TV ratings?

Ris Low pole dancing

When contacted, the show's producers commented that "like every audition in a talent show, Ris has to meet a certain standard" and given that the episode is about teamwork, "the contestants have to be comfortable with their collaborator".

So now that we won't get to see her pole dancing on TV, exactly how talented and qualified is she in this sport that is often associated with sleaze?

Xinmsn met with the ex-beauty queen recently where we found her sweating buckets away at Groove Dance School studio, going about her eleventh-hour preparation [to perform a pole dance sequence for our readers], smiling albeit showing signs of strain while trying to complete a Pole Climb with a Pole Sit move under the coaching of Renee, pole dancer and co-owner of Groove.

"It'd be really thick-skin for me to say this but I think I do have talent in pole dancing!" Ris announced in between giggles, seemingly embarrassed of her bold statement.

Defending her stance, Ris said, "I started dancing in 2005 when Groove was just established; I was one of the pioneer batches of students."

"This is the place where I started my exotic dancing - lap dancing and all sorts of sleazy dancing." (Laughs)

Ris Low

Would she consider joining OMG! to show off her talent?

Just when this reporter was expecting the controversial beauty queen to give a resounding yes, she does an about turn.

"I have no talent at all lah," Ris declared matter-of-factly. "It's like watching a clumsy person on the pole. And I'm very bad with remembering dance routines...so cannot lah!"

"Although I'm already at level 4 of pole dancing - equivalent of intermediate - actually I think I'm still a beginner because I just can't seem to engage my ab muscles to do a Pole Invert," Ris reiterated.

"I'm still very bad just that I refuse to admit it."

So why pole-dancing and what attracted her to the sport?

"I think pole dancing is really sexy as it brings out the sexuality of the person," Ris explained. "People may think that it's sleazy but it gives you the self-confidence to dance in a sexy way where I used to think only strip dancers can do."

According to the former beauty queen, to get herself into a sexy mood before she takes to the pole, she would "think of myself as the most beautiful woman".

"I'd imagine myself with the biggest assets, like from an A cup to double C-cup."

When asked how her boyfriend felt about her dancing passion, Ris said: "My boyfriend would say, "I don't like you to pole-dance lah you look so sleazy", yeah right, but you just have to bring them to a club with pole dancers, and they'll be sitting there for hours, watching till their eyes pop out!"

Ris Low

One might think that Ris would almost certainly perform a pole dance sequence for her boyfriend in a bid to change his views on the sleaze factor but no. According to Ris, she "feels weird dancing for him".

"It'd feel like he's just another "dirty old man" who ogles at girls. I don't know how others feel but I'm don't like the idea of performing sexy dances for a man," Ris replied, without missing a beat.

But isn't that the same as being paid as a pole dancer to perform at a club?

"That's different because that'd mean I'm good so that's a compliment for me," she explained.

"It's like going topless. Topless is ok so long as it's done artistically and not portray the wrong message to ah peks...and young men too!"

"But so far nobody has asked and I don't think anyone would ask lor."

Movie directors, are you reading this?

Have you truly thought out how to live those sunset years to the fullest?

Cheng Huang Leng

I retired in 2000 at the age of 52. I am now 61, and I thought I should share my experiences because I have seen too many friends and neighbours get so bored that they have become a nuisance to their spouse, children and others.

KEEP FIT, SHARP AND USEFUL

There are others who say that when the retire, they will read all the books they have bought over the years. I know of one guy who fell asleep after a few pages! He discovered that he did not like to read after all. We do change and we may not enjoy the hobbies we once did.

What also changes when you retire, is that you wake up to a new routine — one that you must establish for yourself.

A good routine should keep your body, mind and spirit sharpened, and comprise:

• One weekly physical sport. Keep fit so as to enjoy your retirement. If you are not into sports, fire your maid and clean your home without mechanical aids. Dancing and baby-sitting are good alternatives.

• One weekly mind-stimulating activity, such as writing, studying for a degree, acquiring a new skill, solving puzzles or teaching. The day you stop using your brain is the day you start to die.

• One weekly social activity. Get yourself accepted as a member to at least three interest groups. You need friends more than ever as you get older.

• One weekly community service activity.

You need to give to appreciate what you have taken in this life. It’s good to leave some kind of legacy.

The other three days of the week should be devoted to family. In this way, you maintain a balance between amusing yourself and your family members.

Any spare time should remain “spare” so that you can capitalise on opportunities that come your way, such as an unexpected request to handle a project.

Despite your busy routine, you will at times be bored. Then it’s time to turn to your Bucket List of the things to do before you kick the bucket. You need these to have something to look forward to. They could include trips and pilgrimages, visiting old friends and relatives abroad or re-doing your home.

Ultimately, if you can afford to retire and want to do so, start preparing now to live your sunset years to their fullest.

A few solved the problem by going back to work. They were able to do so because they have a skill/expertise that is still in demand. The rest live aimlessly or are waiting to die — a very sad situation indeed.

Do not retire until you meet all four of these pre-conditions: Your children are financially independent; you have zero liabilities; your have enough savings to support your lifestyle for the rest of your life; and, most importantly, you know what you will be doing during your retirement.

The problem cases I know of failed to meet the last pre-condition.

When asked: “What would you be doing during your retirement?”, some replied: “I will travel/cruise and see the world”. They did that, some for three months, and then ran out of ideas.

The golfers replied: “I can play golf every day.” But most could not because they were no longer fit to play well enough to enjoy the game. Those who could had another hurdle — they needed to the find “kakis” to play with.

It’s the same with mahjong, bridge, badminton, trekking and karaoke — you need “kakis”. Many people cannot find others who share their favourite passion

(or, if they do, a few discover they are not welcome, like my obnoxious neighbour whom everyone avoids).

So, form your groups before you retire:

Identify your “kakis”, play with them and discover if they “click” with you.

SGX to quote ADRs of Chinese firms

Ephraim Seow

ephraimseow@mediacorp.com.sg

SINGAPORE

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) said yesterday it would launch the American Depository Receipts (ADRs) of these companies on Oct 22. ADRs are certificates that represent a specified number of shares in a foreign stock traded on a US exchange.

They are denominated in US dollars, with the underlying security held by a US financial institution overseas.

As a start, SGX will quote ADRs of 19 firms on its new GlobalQuote board. Besides PetroChina — currently the world’s second-largest listed company after Exxon Mobil — the others include Chinese language Internet search giant Baidu and the world’s biggest telco, China Mobile.

SGX said the move marked the start of its cooperation with Nasdaq OMX to bring ADRs to GlobalQuote. It will link market participants from both trading pools, with the ADRs on GlobalQuote fully interchangeable with US-listed ADRs. BNY Mellon is the depository bank for SGX’s GlobalQuote.

If it proves popular, the exchange may extend the platform to the ADRs of South Korean, Taiwanese and Indian firms, SGX executive vice-president Chew Sutat said.

Industry experts welcomed the move, saying the ADRs are a good product with which investors can diversify their portfolios. ADRs could also be a more efficient and cost-effective system since investors here do not have to open a separate trading account and incur additional broking fees, they said.

However, they expect a slow initial subscription rate.

“It may take about half a year for investors to know the way around the trading system and understand the companies they are buying into. The take up rate also depends on the marketing of these firms and the accessibility of research information,” noted Mr Roger Tan, vice-president of Sias Research.

Analysts also warn investors to be aware of the risks related to investing in ADRs.

“Beyond the regular risks of equities trading, there is the added currency risk.

Even if the shares appreciate, the overall value may be decreasing if the US dollar is weakening while the Singapore dollar is strengthening,” said Mr Albert Fong, president of The Society of Remisiers.— Singapore-based investors will soon have the opportunity to trade in shares of some of the large Chinese firms listed in the United States, such as PetroChina and Baidu, during the Asian time zone.

Eat your way to healthy eyes

GRANDMA was wise when she urged you to eat your carrots.

According to eye experts, antioxidants from coloured vegetables and fruits, such as carrots, pumpkin, kiwi and spinach, can help maintain eye health and prevent the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is a severe eye disease characterised by progressive degeneration of the macula, a small spot in the middle of the retina that is responsible for fine, sharp, straight-ahead vision. Most of the degenerative changes in the retina caused by AMD cannot be reversed, said Dr Ajeet Wagle, a consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s ophthalmology and visual sciences (OVS) department.

Dr Ajeet explained that such vegetables and fruits are rich in carotenoids, which are essential natural antioxidants found in the macular area of the retina at the back of the eye.

Carotenoids cannot be produced within the body, and can only be obtained through one’s diet. “The natural carotenoids, namely lutein and zeaxanthin, are powerful antioxidants and

protect the retina from oxidative damage,” said Dr Ajeet.

Carrots, he added, are rich in betacarotene that can be converted to vitamin A in the body.

A lack of vitamin A is often associated with poor vision in dim places and at night.

In developed countries, AMD is the most common cause of blindness among people aged over 60. At OVS at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, about 100 new cases of AMD are diagnosed every month.

Unfortunately, not many people are aware of the important role vitamins and antioxidants play in eye health.

A study conducted by OVS at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital showed that 12.4 per cent of the 411 eye patients surveyed were consuming vitamin supplements for eye health. Only 4.7 per cent of them were aware of the contents of the supplements they were taking.

It also found that less than half of the respondents had consulted a specialist or general practitioner before taking the supplements.

Halt AMD progression with vitamins?

Based on recommendations by the United States-based National Eye Institute, a combination of vitamin C (500mg), vitamin E (400IU), beta-carotene (15mg) and zinc (80mg) can help prevent the progression of intermediate to more advanced forms of AMD.

Dr Ajeet emphasised that this formulation of vitamins and antioxidants will not help those with early AMD.

Although they are available as over-the-counter supplements, Dr Ajeet cautioned AMD sufferers against taking them without consulting their eye doctors.

“The formulation contains very high doses of antioxidants which may interfere with other medications and interact with other nutrients to decrease absorption into the body.

Patients who are being treated for other chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes should also consult their doctors before taking it,” he said. Eveline Gan

PHOTOS: Lady Gaga meat dress crawling with maggots?

Has the eccentric star gone too far this time? Or is she pushing the boundaries of fashion with her meat dress?

lady gaga meat dress

If Lady Gaga was out to shock, she's done it again with a raw meat dress at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Animal rights groups were up in arms criticizing the outfit - which is thought to be made of real meat. Maggots were likely to be crawling in the Franc Fernandez outfit, they claim.

On her eccentric choice, the Bad Romance singer said: "Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth."

She added: " However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening...if we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat."

Is she running out of ideas, or is she out to shock? Check out the rest of her kooky looks
