Business Times - 20 May 2009

Wall St stocks climb as financial sector in focus

NEW YORK - Wall Street stocks opened higher on Wednesday as increased optimism about the financial sector helped the market maintain upward momentum.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 55.27 points (0.65 per cent) to 8,530.12 in early trades.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq added 11.30 points (0.65 per cent) to 1,745.84 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.63 points (0.95 per cent) to 916.76.

The action came after stocks drifted mainly lower on Tuesday in choppy trading on mixed housing sector data. The Dow dipped 0.34 per cent, the Nasdaq rose 0.13 per cent and the S&P 500 slipped 0.17 per cent.

Joseph Hargett at Schaeffer's Investment Research said Bank of America's news that it has issued 1.25 billion shares and raised roughly US$13.47 billion to meet the requirements of government stress tests was positive.

'BofA's first steps in raising the stress-test mandated capital is lifting spirits this morning,' he said. -- AFP

Economic news now drives the market. Because there isn't any important reports this week, I see the Dow trading in a relatively narrow range.
