The results announcement for UOB was announced on friday during lunch break, which explains the price spike after lunch. You can see that on your intraday chart. At 12.29pm it was 18.46, at 2pm it was 18.60. A 14-cents spike. 100 lots will bring in about $14,000 profit for those who bought at 12.29pm and sold at 2pm, a short duration of about 1.5 hours. That is the influence of results announcement on stocks. The white candle on friday for OCBC shows you a much better investor sentiment towards OCBC's results announcement than to UOB's. UOB and OCBC, even though both are in the banking industry, they are still two different business entities with different business profiles. No doubt their income statements and balance sheets will be different as well. Every trade carries a risk, a possible reward of $14,000 profit also carries the risk of a $14,000 loss. Can you take that risk? This is a question you have to ask yourself. Trading is not for everybody. You might be better off as a long-term investor.

I would guess it's because expected earnings for Q3 were not very high for banks but UOB supposed expectations which is why there was a drop but then a rise after annoucement. OCBC which was trading on Fri after seeing UOB post earnings that exceed expectations also start to rise in anticipation for Mon's results?

Indofood Agri down on Q3 net profit fall |
Tags: Indofood Agri Resources
WRITTEN BY THOMSON REUTERS |
FRIDAY, 29 OCTOBER 2010 10:33 |
Shares of Singapore-listed palm oil firm Indofood Agri Resources <IFAR.SI> fell as much as 4.5% in early trade on Friday after it reported an 18% fall in third-quarter net profit.
At 0226 GMT, Indo Agri shares were down 3.8% at $2.55 on a volume of 1.8 million shares. “The palm oil stocks have been doing well but Indo Agri’s translated earnings are unfortunately lower because the dollar fell,” said a local tader.
Indo Agri said its third-quarter net profit fell 18% year-on-year on the strengthening of the Indonesian rupiah and a smaller increase in the fair value of its biological assets. |
Indo Agri just reported earnings which did not meet consensus estimates. Do your research properly before you jump in.
100 lots of OCBC or even UOB can be done with CFDs. But like I said, leveraged trading is not for everybody.
High risk, high rewards. But I also know people who got so badly burnt they never recovered. Are you prepared to put yourself through the training and put in the necessary time and effort to train yourself to be a trader? Trader's skills require laser sharp accuracy, excellent timing of exit and entry, solid nerves and fast reaction during market hours. Not to mention hours of research and preparation before market opens.
If you are not prepared to do all these, I suggest you keep your money safe in the bank and perhaps invest as a long-term investor.

Hi BT. When you say your money is on OCBC do you mean we should try to buy a bit on Mon?? Or will it be too late already as UOB as announced profits so OCBC should be making a profit also. Thanks!

Its on my watchlist but only noticed after lunch break by then prx rebounded didnt buy. Olam also fared well today but does anyone knows what's happening to Noble Group (is 3rd qtr not expected to be gd)? Bullish and AK mentioned before. All in commodities sector is expected to do well with further weakening of usd esp. with qty easing package clarified nxt wk.

Trading is a serious business...
and not 'main-main'...
or 'tikam-tikam'...
or 'gian-gian hantam or gasak butah'...
Plus, one should ideally have a dedicated setup just for it...
I am sure you will learn all these from BT as you go along...

Pretty much close to real time. Some are not free, but still worth it.
Gaecia ( Date: 30-Oct-2010 14:22) Posted:
Thanks bullish will keep in mind. Granted one must be well versed in quick scanning financial stm if announcement is 8.30am or midway trading hrs ie.10am. Subsequently, time to market to execute is another trait. Lol
When u subscribe to the Edge, Business Times and Bloomberg, does the news company will email your requested corporate results real time?
BullishTempo ( Date: 30-Oct-2010 14:01) Posted:
Make a habit to do back-tracking and note the dates and times of past announcements and study how the market reacted with the price dips or price spikes. Very profitable trader's skill. Giving you guys a heads up. Look at how the market reacted to UOB's news on Thursday and Friday. Note the news announcements dates and times. Note the result announcement date and time. Compare it to the Intraday charts. This will tell you when and what time to enter for OCBC and take the price spike ride upwards. Enter at the wrong point in time and you may make a loss instead of profits. Trading is not for the faint-hearted |
