A Boring Counter ... man...Net profit seems very low!

SembCorp Marine ..Ho Hum..ZZzzzzzz

Was searching for the latest statements for SembMarine and spotted the error in their investor relations page. 2007 instead of 2008. But we digress..this is not impt.
See below: Net Profit Margin at 9.6% ( Compare with Cosco's 18%!)
See below: Current Asset(CA) greater then Current Liabilities(CL)! (while Cosco's CA is lower than CL)

See Below: Since Sembmarine's bulk of its business comes from Rigbuilding, we decided to look at the utilization rates (2nd light blue table below) of rigs world wide to try to infer activity which is related with the demand for rigs. Well Well Well..so far so good, no dip in utilization rates (in fact it has increased, slightly, now at 89% vs 87.5% a month ago, hmm even though the price of oil has gone down!).

Really, SembMarine to SGDividends is So So..not good not bad..not here not there...but it will definitely be out of our watchlist. Its average fundamentally, we think!

When CO declines, oil rigs projects would be affected. Analysts claimed.

Based on my example, the employee/director pays only $1.00.....their option price.

From the Co. point of view, if they issue new shares for this option, then the $2.00 will be treated as an expense.

If the Co. issues the shares from their Treasury Share A/C (which they bought back earlier and placed it into Treasury), and if they bought it for $2.00, then they will charge the difference of the cost of the Treasury share ($2.00) and the exercise price ($1.00)....i.e. expense to the Co. will be $1.00 ($$2.00 - $1.00).

Think this is basically how it works.

Thanks. This is the first time i learnt this and from you. I got it now.

In other words, it is better to exercise their options at a price nearer to the option pr, and expect a breakout up to very high level. Then it is the most optimal, pay lower tax, and enjoy higher capital gain.

1 qn: Do they have to pay the $2 difference to company when exercising. I think don't need, right? because it is an option.

Besides share buybacks, one should also pay attention to directors's transactions.

Yesterday, SGX announced 4 directors exercising their share options. The significance of this may indicate they feel that the share price may be bottoming out  (at least in the short term).

The reason being, profits on share options are taxable based on the date of exercising the option. i.e. say the exercise price is $1.00 and the share price closes at $3.00 on the exercise date. The difference of $2.00 ($3.00 - $1.00) is taxable as earned income. So, it makes sense to try to keep the difference between the market price on the option date and the option price at a minimum. If he/she eventually sells the stock at $4.50, then the difference of $1.50 ($4.50 - $3.00) is considered capital gains and not taxable.
