good for you .. $$$,  but how would you handle kids who want to have their soft drink??

hey, Asterisk sorry.. must say Diet Coke also not so good because it contains aspartate (in place of sugar) and this shown to be carcinogenic:  I think personally suggest you drink plain water, or coffee siu dai, or drink wine like elfin & me..

Cancer Worries For Diet Soda Drinkers

Consumer advocates are calling for the FDA to take another look at the safety of aspartame in light of the study

hey Asterisk..  I have find the research on corrosive effects of different soft drinks: so save you the trouble of experimenting with your toilet bowl...

here is the article:

With all the bad news about Coke making people fat and generally being bad for you, finally some good news!

Researchers at the University of Maryland did a little test by dropping teeth into 12 different beverages for 2 weeks to see what happens to enamel over roughly the period of a decade in your mouth.

Surprisingly, Coke was the least harmful of all the drinks tested!

Now, none of this crap is as good for you as simply drinking water, but check out the list to determine what is eating away at your teeth the fastest.

Drink Enamel Erosion (mg / sq cm)
Coca Cola 3
Black Tea 5
Arizona Origina Iced Tea 9
Nestea Sweetened Lemon 10
Fanta Orange 12
Lemon Propel Fitness Water 12
Nantucket Nectars Half and Half 13
AMP Energy 14
Artic Shatter Powerade 17
Lemon Lime Gatorade 20
Red Bull 21
Snapple Lemonade 29

It?s kind of hard to believe that Snapple is actually 10 times WORSE for you than Coke?

ha ha .. asterisk..  I think in that case no need lah..  just do one with coke... I think 100 plus is ok...

btw..  personally I believe the bad effects of soft drinks is the high concentration of sugar in it and also the preservatives like phosporic acid & sodium benzoate... e.g do you know that a bottle of coke has six table spoons of sugar?

The market needs (and love) soft drinks...

F&N, YHS, etc... their fortunes are made from the market.

Nothing will change... Smiley

singaporegal,

The time that the coke is in contact with your teeth is probably insignificant to do any damage.....unless you habitually keep a mouthful in you mouth for hours before swallowing. Coke may even do your teeth some good by cleaning the plaque and tartar.....ha ha ha. But, don't take my word for it....check with your dentist.

As for bones......there is not direct contact with bones and should not have any effect. Anyway, I think our gastric juices is probably more acidic than coke.

Asterisk,

Yes, I have heard that coke can be used to clear clogged drains in your sink. I remembered trying it but its not too effective. The commercial drain cleaners are better. Perhaps it (coke)may be useful as laxatives...he he he

I found this post too...

Have you ever wondered why Coke comes with a smile? It?s because it gets you high. They took the cocaine out almost a hundred years ago. You know why? It was redundant.
  • In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don?t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
  • 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There?s plenty of that at this particular moment)
  • 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
  • 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
  • >60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
  • >60 Minutes: The caffeine?s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you?ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
  • >60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you?ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You?ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you?re a smoker.) But, hey, have another Coke, it?ll make you feel better.

ha ha Snoothie...it wasnt my idea... I did it at request of Datuk Baseer...

but seriously folks, I must say that our stomach is actually quite well built to handle corrosive stuff... you see.. it actually produces hydrochloric acid to help in the digestion of proteins...  however having said that I think the stories of coke acting on mouth, i.e teeth is true.. also what happens when it goes through the gullet... but seriously the one on sodium benzoate preservative needs some attention...

hey Asterisk.. why not just try different carbonated drinks on your toilet and let us know the result... ?

From my own reasoning...

Soft drinks are created to be of a certain desired taste.

The tongue/taste chemical technologists simply go to work hard towards that goal.

The final product is that distinctive taste desired by the market.

Soft drinks are distinctly different from natural juices for example.  Smiley

singaporegal,

It is probably true ...but exaggerated. The carbonated drinks, because of its acidity will react with iron (steel). Whilst it won't completely dissolve it after a while but the rod may show some signs of 'pitting' on its surface. Bear in mind that the reaction of the 'acid' with the iron will neutralise it. So, after the 'acid' is spent, the reaction will stop....i.e. the 'pitting' or corrosion of the metal will stop.......unless you keep refreshing the drink.

Health hazards of food and beverages have been known since ages ago
by the health-conscious 'health nuts'.

But the masses love it, so the entrepreneurs simply provide them with it...

In this world, the market is the only reality... Smiley

I heard from someone (not sure if it is true) ... an experiment was done on soft drinks before. A metal rod was placed in a cup of soft drink. After a while, the metal rod dissolved.... !!!

An occasional Coke or Pepsi is harmless...

Though drinking it over a prolonged period as a habit would definitely not appeal to the health-conscious... Smiley
