SAN FRANCISCO // Plans to convert the Dubai-owned QE2 liner into a floating luxury hotel in Asia took a major step forward on Tuesday after the selection of a Chinese shipyard to refurbish the vessel.

QE2 Holdings, which owns the ship, announced the work will be done by Cosco Shipyard at its yard in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province.

The vessel will sail there from Dubai, where it has been docked since 2008, and the work is due to be completed in 2015.

The 990 staterooms will be converted into 400 luxury suites ranging in size from 60 to 150 square metres.

Cosco will work with an interior renovation contractor that has yet to be appointed.

The ballroom will be refurbished and there will be seven restaurants, 10 lounges, a cinema, a museum with QE2 memorabilia and a mall.

?No other ship can match the QE2?s prestige or her legacy,? said Khamis Buamim, chairman of QE2 Holdings and Dubai?s Drydocks World.

?She is an absolute icon of maritime history, one of the best and most powerful ships in the world. Therefore, our decision on a partner was critical.

?We are pleased to be working closely with Cosco Shipyard for the technical repair and refurbishment process, which will be carried out with the utmost respect to the QE2?s heritage and splendour.?

Mr Buamim said in July that the conversion work would cost US$90 million (Dh330m). It is not yet known where in Asia it will be docked, although Singapore and Hong Kong are thought to be under consideration.

Cosco won the contract from several other bids.

?The Zhoushan shipyard is one of Cosco?s largest and newest, and it certainly has the capacity to host a cruise ship of the QE2?s stature,? said vice president Yan Chengxiang.

QE2 Holdings said it had invited seven international interior design houses to put forward plans for the conversion. The public will be able to see the designs at www.qe2hotels.com, and the winner will be announced on November 30.

The retired liner, which sailed the world for 40 years, went to Dubai after a division of the Dubai World conglomerate bought her from the Cunard Line for US$100 million (Dh367.3m).

Plans to use her as a luxury hotel at the Palm Jumeirah were dropped after the economic crash, and a number of other proposals also came to nothing.

Cosco Shipyard chosen to retrofit Dubai?s QE2

a picture goes here

Shanghai: The Dubai-based QE2 Holdings yesterday announced the appointment of Cosco Shipyard Group to refurbish the cruiseship into a luxury floating hotel.

The cruiseship will depart from Dubai and arrive in Cosco Zhoushan shipyard for conversion. It is the first cruise conversion project in any domestic shipyard. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

?We are pleased to be working closely with Cosco Shipyard for the technical repair and refurbishment process, which will be carried out with the utmost respect to the QE2?s heritage and splendour. China Cosco?s expertise in cruise ship conversion will complement our extensive experience in comprehensive ship repair work and upgrades,? said Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of QE2 Holdings and Dubai?s Drydocks World. I will stay vested in Cosco and NOL, my profit margin for Cosco is 30% more than Yangzijiang for ever cent rise. for my dime Yangzijiang is banging on its past balance sheet profit margin until the real profit margin for the new orders..... then we will really see.

Yangzijiang I will keep in view to enter next year for 2015 profit (from their property development profit).

Cosco will show a better performance in 3Q2013 due to BDI has been rising and reached 1900 and poised to break 2000.

Cosco will direct benefit from BDI rising , its 650,000 dwt or 16 ships Dry Bulk Carrier will make much money now instead of previous loss.

Cosco year end will deliver a Sevan 650 USD500million rig will realise profit for 4Q2013.

With much increase in orders now close to or at USD8.0billion with 1.2billion+ orders in 3Q2013, next year Cosco Profit margin will improve.

Cosco 1Q and 2Q2014 will be delivering USD2.5billion of orders will realise at lease  4 times profit more than this year.

BB are accumulating.

Investor are now considering Yangzijiang base on Balance sheet of previous orders profit margin which is good at 20%+

2013 Yangzijiang orders are now reversing to low profit margin which will reflect in 2014 and 2015 balance sheet. That is why Renruanlin says 2014 will be tough year and 2015 has property   profit to add in.

Yangzijiang orders now for most ships are lower than Cosco, even cosco can not compete in those price such as recently Yangzijiang orders build for 208000dwt BC at USD55million each where Cosco 111000dwt Cosco build for USD45million 1/2 the size.

and recent Yangzijiang orders for 82000dwt build for about USD27million and Cosco orders for 64,000dwt this Sept 2013 build for USD37million each.

You do your due diligence to check all those prices. You think Cosco is so inefficient and whole of China is so inefficient and whole world is so inefficient in ship building that ONLY Yangzijiang is Soooo Gooood???? Think again. Why do you think the co-founder for Yangzijiang so called non-executive director sell off his 55million shares? Profit are not as before. Yangzijiang profit margin may be in par with Cosco even if they are more efficient.

Cosco most orders are from Off Shores and Cosco do not take much BCs since. Because Yangzijiang make it too cheap. Steel free of charge?

No way, Cosco and YZJ are in par... Cosco is too big and operating expenses are too high and inefficient... YZJ is just too far ahead of Cosco..
