Pay-TV firm M2B to draw 70% of revenue from ads

PAY-TV operators usually get the bulk of their revenue from subscriptions but interactive TV company M2B World reckons it is time to change the channel.
M2B is revamping its business model, a direct response to the growing reluctance of audiences to pay for content.
Once the revamp is completed in a few months, advertising should make up 60 to 70 per cent of M2B's revenue, with the rest coming from a mix of merchandising and pay-periew premium content.
Subscriptions will either be free or cost just a few dollars a month, said the company's executive chairman for the Asia-Pacific, Mr Colin Binny.
That signals a major departure from its current model, which involves collecting $30 a month from several thousand subscribers who tune in to Korean soap operas, anime and pay-per-view movies either online or using a special set-top box.
The challenge for the new model will be to attract enough viewers to become an attractive advertising vehicle.
M2B, which is working on a backdoor listing in Singapore via a reverse takeover with Sesdaq-listed education player Auston International, has set aside more than $5 million to buy top-notch content.
It aims to compete with both incumbent pay-TV operator StarHub and SingTel.
Mr Binny said the change was necessary as audiences are increasingly unwilling to pay for programmes due to video piracy and an abundance of 'free' alternatives online.
Many football matches, for example, are also available online, even if the quality might be lower.
Mr Binny also noted that 'people have grown more tolerant of ads - as long as they are not in your face'.
'They are okay with the newspaper ad model, where people can choose if they want to look at the ad, or not.'
He is also confident that online advertising will grow, resulting in a bigger pie for players such as M2B.
United States-based Amaru, M2B's parent company, has pumped US$22 million ($33.3 million) into the company and raised an additional US$6 million, mostly earmarked for buying programmes.
If the reverse takeover succeeds, Amaru will invest an additional $15 million to expand M2B into a regional interactive TV player, said Mr Binny.
'I hope to get this takeover done by the end of the year.'
The deal could make M2B the first digital media firm with a Singapore listing

how many stock are trading below NAV..this QAF as I know is 70c over..currently trading at 59c...pls check it yourself..
