wait till he is bck from USA. Now he is lauching his pte hedge funds at USA. I seriously doubt he will be having much time to teach.. after all, teaching to him is not earning him much as compared to what he earn from his property and hedge fund mgmt biz. we didnt have pte lessons from him since July anyway..

However, all i can reveal after learning from him and other Professional Traders is that u just need to stick to ur trading strategy no matter what happen. Just be like Sinngal, spend a few bucks buying those good trading books and after filtering a few to choose ur preference style, stick to it wholeheartedly thru rain or shine. all trading strategies need you to go thru the rain period, there is no strategy that doesnt, unless u are insider traders.

Hi Robin

I empathise with your loss.  However I have nothing more to add to the countless wonderful postings from the veterans, masters and members on how to take the loss.  I just want you to know that your sharing and your thoughts are really appreciated, and that like all of us, you will learn from your loss.

I wish you the best of luck in recuperating back your loss.

Biggest realized lost is BioT...bought at 0.9, cut at 0.615. #$@#!.

Hi robinpang,

I lost $20k playing contra, Clob shares and during the dot.com bust. I've learnt from my mistakes and recoup my losses now.

I advise you not to play contra. You only have T+3 days and your timing must be very accurate. How many times can you do that? In this bull market, if you held and paid up, most of stock prices are up.

I suggest you open a margin account. Then you won't have time constraints. I believe you would have made a profit, instead of loss. Use max 80% of your buy limit. So that, if the prices go down, you don't need to sell the shares or top up your account.

Have a trading plan before you trade. What to buy, when to buy and when to sell. If the price falls, be disciplined in cutting loss. Say around 8% below your purchase price. This way, you preserve your capital and won't suffer large losses.

Don't feel down. Just take it as a lesson and learn from it. Cheer up.

Hi,

I am referring to a note from Cashiertan to say that he/she will be graduating from SGX to Dow Jones.

This interest me tremendously as I was trying to do the same. Am planning to buy some blue chips in SGX and than not look at it anymore - but to start looking at Dow Jone. However, I do not know how to start with the purchase of stock in US. How to select a broker and what is the commission like. Will I be taxed on any capital gain. and should  i be looking at buying equity in US or playing with their stock options.

Anybody has any comments on this ? I just want to cast my net wider.

Thanks,

Dear all,

I would like to thank the veterans of the stockmarket, namely teeth53($30k+), cashiertan($15k), lewsh88($300k), hohokit($50k), taybc1071, jasjasjas($10k), and chipchip66 for reply to this post. I feel better, not because that you guys make my $14+k  look peanuts, but because there is a pattern, which is that most have managed to recuperate the loss, and are more experienced in stocks now, with lesser losses and more gains.

The newbies and people who play contra like fenizz and I still have a long way to go. Hopefully we keep our shorts in due time. I know i've lost my shirt.

Thanks for the valuable advice like not borrowing money from banks to buy stocks, contra without the ability to pick it up. All these sounds foolish, but when greed speaks, sometimes it;s voice is louder than mine. I still believe there are still many lessons that newbies and old-hands alike can still learn from ther stock market. Especially since recession clouds are looming, and the housing bubble has collapsed in the US, one starts to wonder if "domino theory" will catch hold and start to cause a correction in the high end property market in singapore.

And since i really have not much cash left to play the market in the short run, i have started awebsite where i wish people can come and share in more details how one came to losing money. It should also not be limited to losing money in stocks, since it seems that property speculation is quite rife too. I stongly believe that in sharing, i have felt less alone in this process. And by creating an avenue for us to share our pain, hopefully we can making the investing lesson a less painful and more enriching experience.

Really hope that you guys (teeth53,cashiertan,lewsh88,hohokit, taybc1071, jasjasjas, chipchip) especially feniz, can participate and share how the loss has affected you and those around you, and how you managed to cope with this and pulled yourself through. What are the most difficult lessons that you have learned in the process?

Hope that we can all share and learn.

Well wishes.

cashiertan, yes, I bought it through insurance, therefore, there are some insurance protection. Anyway, I just revealed my profile to you guys... I graduated from the US in Dec 2003, start working in Singapore in March 2004. I love my jobs, because I can travel to Germany often... next week is my 5th trip to Germany... Anyway, back to my funds.. I had Aviva Lion Capitol India Funds, Aviva Lion Capital Japan Fund, Aviva Henderson Europe Funds. They are all under insurance scheme, if you sell the first year 5% sales charge, then, 2nd year 4%... until the fifth year is 0%... On top of that, I have invesment-linked plan, AIA Arcons of Asia, started in March 2004 (good returns so far), one endowment plan HSBC Target Savers, (regret buying this , anyway, it's okay), as well as AsiaLife Insurance (I recommend this !!). I will cancel all the Aviva funds, and took out the money. However, the endowments, I will keep paying, anyway, that's only for 20 years payment. It can discipline myself to save SGD 250 per month as well. That's all my profile... oh yeah, I am going to Bintan tomorrow, why? I will let you guys know, heee... that's a very important "event" of me....

Dear all,

to guage whether if u really are good enough is that u can make profit even during bear market. since 2003 to 2006, almost eveyone can make $ buying stocks due to the bull run. 2007 and 2008 will test ur skills..

current trend is that the market will go into recession once every 3-5 yrs. since the global economy has grown tremendously since 2002, 2007 and 2008 will be good time for a recession?

I also about $60K during the clob days. After that, I told myself that I am not going to buy stocks anymore.  However, during the last 3 years, I started attending free seminars and talks organize by SIAS and started trading again.  This is how I fared :

Year 2003 - breakeven

Year 2004 - made about $1,500

Year 2006 todate - made about $4,500. Most of my gains are recent buys after I joined this forum.

I wonder when will I ever  recoup my losses... From what I have learnt from the gurus and verterans here and the assistance rendered, I hope to be able to do better next year. What I need to do now is also to check out how my unit trusts are doing and sell them if they are not performing.

jackjames? why u need to pay 4% for selling charges of ur UT? u buy it via insurance brokers or agent?

Warrent is very interesting to me too where the return is much higher than risk, provided u treat it like a option rather than a stocks. for example, if u intend to buy 10k of SIA stocks. thus instead of putting 10k on SIA, u can consider putting 1000-2000 on buying the warrent.

A good way for ppl who have limited money to invest.

However, i dun buy warrent coz i cant margin it.

the opportunity is always there.

If miss it, don't chase after the price. You are only support it for big boys to dump theirs.

Wait for weakness to come, you may not get it at lowest, neither you are holding it at the highest.

Hi Eldarchen,

Welcome to SJ! No PM here..... which is good.. because lets keep our questions and replies public so all can learn from one another.

You just post your opinions and usually the FA or TA gurus here will reply to you within a day. Very helpful bunch here.

I've learnt so much since I joined.

Have been talking to my landlord this morning...  I forgot to ask what stocks made him "loss".. so far, he said, China Aviation, Singtel, Cosco, SIA, made him very rich, he throw all the stocks now, and playing warrants.. Yongnam warrant is one of them.. the expiry date is 2009, so he is so firm that it will go up high within 3 years time.. but still I do not dare to vest that penny stocks as I am going to purchase a new home next year.. Really need cash by then.. As he mentioned, Cosco is so cheap last time at 0.18! that is why, u can see chairman of Cosco throwing at 2.10 as well.. Anyway, I am getting ready to cancel my Lion Capital India funds.. I bought it a year ago... strong growth more than 30%, but in June this year, it made me loss 18%!!! And now, back strong to earn 28%!!! (not to mention there is selling charge at 4% at the second year..). I will sell them off next year, and concentrate on more value stocks which can give me more returns, as those India and Henderson Europe funds are way too slow for me..
