Chartered is currently in a sweet spot to take position....prepare for a surge to 90¢ if the mkt sentiment is good. There is downside risk but I think the upside is more than the downside...just my view...

CSM posted a 62% drop in quarterly profit on Thu as demand for video game consoles, personal computers and communication equipment weakened. It posted a Q1 net profit of US$2.4 million, or nil per diluted ADS, compared with a net profit of US$6.3 million, or 2 US cents per ADS, in the year-ago period. The result was lower than the mean profit estimate of US$3.24 million from 5 analysts polled by Reuters in Singapore. Revenue was US$388.2 million, up 19.9% from a year ago or a 10.1% increase from Q4. That was better than the 3-6% sequential growth that Chartered forecast last month. The company said it expected Q2 revenue to grow 16-19% from the first quarter, mainly due to its acquisition of Hitachi Semiconductor Singapore Pte Ltd, which operates an 8" wafer plant in Singapore. Chartered President and CEO Chia Song Hwee said in a statement he expected the company's growth momentum to continue into the latter half of the year as more products enter production and increase its breadth of applications. "Despite these positive signs, like most other businesses, we continue to be cautious about the potential negative impact from a global economic condition that could become more unfavorable going forward," Chia said. "In addition, we also need to deal with the challenges of intense competition and cost pressure in the foundry industry." Chartered forecast Q2 quarter revenue at US$455 million, plus or minus US$6 million, and net income at about US$6 million, plus or minus US$5 million. It expected average selling prices to fall 1-6% in Q2 compared to the first, and capacity utilization at 88%, plus or minus 3%, compared to 86% in Q1.

CHARTERED TO ACQUIRE EIGHT-INCH WAFER FAB OPERATION IN SINGAPORE
Additional capacity to support mature technology offerings as Chartered faces limits in internal capacity enhancement
SINGAPORE ? February 15, 2008 ? Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. (Nasdaq: CHRT and SGX-ST: CHARTERED), one of the world?s top dedicated semiconductor foundries, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Hitachi, Ltd and Hitachi Asia, Ltd to purchase 100 percent of the shares in Hitachi Semiconductor Singapore Pte Ltd (?HNS?), which owns and operates an eight-inch wafer fabrication facility located in Singapore, for a total consideration of approximately US$233 million in cash. This additional facility will augment the capacity of four eight-inch fabs Chartered currently operates.
The incremental capacity resulting from this transaction will enable Chartered to meet some of the additional requirements of existing customers, capture new business opportunities and further diversify its customer base. The transaction also includes a manufacturing agreement with Renesas Technology Corp, an existing customer of HNS, to provide approximately US$250 million to US$300 million worth of future wafer fabrication services. The transaction, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of first quarter 2008, is expected to be funded through a combination of existing cash balance, cash flow from operations and credit facilities and is subject to certain customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to be neutral to Chartered?s earnings in 2008."
