Straits Asia Resources hopes to make new acquisitions this year SINGAPORE: Singapore mainboard-listed coal mining company, Straits Asia Resources, wants to ride on its record performance last year. It plans to make new acquisitions this year and list its marine engineering subsidiary, PT Indo Straits, before the end of this year. Coal-mining has unearthed huge profits for Straits Asia Resources, which saw its full-year earnings soar in 2008, with net profit jumping over 330 per cent to US$124.4 million. Revenue also surged by 133 per cent to US$585.2 million. The bottomline was boosted by record coal production at its two thermal coal mines in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Despite the current global slowdown, Straits Asia Resources is confident there is room for growth in coal production. Richard Ong, CEO, Straits Asia Resources, said: "Last year, it's 8.6 million tonnes and this year, we target 9.5 million tonnes... As to the planning of the company, we're moving for 20 million tonnes in the next three years, based on these two mines. "Demand is increasing because coal is a cheaper commodity to getting energy, so the future for coal is still very bright." There has been talk of a potential takeover bid for Straits Asia Resources, following news that its major shareholder Straits Resources was conducting a strategic review of its stake. But the company said discussions are still ongoing. Australian miner Straits Resources, which owns about 47.1 per cent in the company, had said that it wanted to conduct a strategic review in relation to its shareholding. This is apparently after the Australian firm was approached by some on the possibility of acquiring the stake. "We haven't finalised on that, it's still under negotiations. But I think this is good for both sides, for all parties because I'm sure we're all looking for the best deal," said Mr Ong. Straits Asia Resources hopes it would be able to acquire the two new mining rights area around its Jembayan mine before the end of this year. With that, the company also hopes to attract new customers from European countries like Italy. Right now, its clients are mainly from within Asia, such as Japan, India and Korea. |
There is a good and encouraging news/article in the EDGE mag. I forgot the date of the issue..think a few issues back.
Congrats to those vested. Very very potential to hit the jackpot!
Cheers.
reported on Sat Straits Times : SAR is planning to add a 3rd coal mine, and there are 8 to 10 interested party in buying over the 47% stake held by its parent, Straits Resource. These are good news, but due to weak market sentiments, SAR still can drag along.

Straits Asia to double coal output
Reuters reported that Singapore listed Straits Asia Resources aims to more than double its annual coal production to 20 million tonnes by 2012 and may acquire two Indonesian coal mines to achieve that target.
Mr Richard Ong CEO of Straits Asia the company will start by boosting its production to 9.5 million tonnes this year from 8.6 million last year.
He said that "I think the plan for this company is to bring to 20 million in three years. We are not stopping to look into acquisitions we may want to select one or two. Those acquisitions will be of Indonesian assets.”
Straits Asia's shares rose as much as 3.2% in late trade on last Friday, outperforming a 0.7% fall in the benchmark Singapore index. Commodities firm Noble Group and Indonesian coal miner PT Indika Energy Tbk are among the companies also pursuing a bid for Straits Asia itself, sources told Reuters in January, in a deal that could be worth more than USD 800 million.
Mr Ong declined to comment on bids for the firm, saying it was up to its parent firm, Australian miner Straits Resources Limited that owns 47.1% of the company. He said that Straits Asia controls 100% of Indonesian mining service company PT Indo Straits, which it aims to spin off and either sell part or its entire stake through an initial public offering by the end of 2009. The company has not decided the size of the stake in Indo Straits that it wants to sell during the offering or the amount it aims to rise.
Straits Asia said that it was difficult to give an outlook for coal prices since supplies were likely to fall along with demand, as some producers faced difficulties in getting financing.
Mr Ong said that the firm would fund its expansion with cash. The company has nearly USD 100 million in cash or equivalent and a USD 300 million refinancing facility obtained from Standard Chartered in November, according to its 2008 financial statement. The firm posted over a 300% rise in both Q4 and 2008 net profits.
Straits Asia, with a market cap of USD 548.6 million has two coal mines in Indonesia's coal rich East Kalimantan province and exports most of its output to power plants in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India. In terms of size, it is similar to Indonesia's eighth largest coal producer PT Bayan Resources, which also plans to produce 9.5 million tonnes of coal this year.
