Dear AK_Francis, I thought Ex date: means that if you sell before 25 April, you will not be entitled to the dividend, but if you sell on 25 April you will still be entitled to the dividend, basically, they will record on 24 April after the closing bell of the trade. Am I right...

What I understand the below, by logics, didn't ask broker, esp the buy-in and last register date(record date as posted) issues.

Ex date: means you sell your SPC on 24 you still entitle the div, but not if you sell on 25.

Buy-in Last Cum Date:For naked shorting SPC and cheque payment. If Giro, then 29 is the settlement date.

Record date: If you buy in SPC on 24, T+4, is payment date if on Giro, if cheque thus T+5.

For buy in and record date, if you pay by cheque, thats how well your broker entrusted you. Normally, if your cheque is late, if they trusted you, they will pay for you first, for small timer. But for big investor, thats another ball game already.

Cheers.

Ha, me still watching NYSE and NASDAQ and surprised to see so many awake.

I chose SPC and is now stuck with it cos all other stocks are already sky high, think SPC got abit more to go, very high resistance at $7.50. Think no chance to clear $7.50.

And then bcos I got no stock left to buy (all too high), will patiently wait for STI to hit 3300 and then correction back to 3000. Will prob choose some good stocks like SGX then. Possibly of SGX going below $8. Then SGX next target will be $10 after this coming correction.

Hey AK, next financial is 1st quarter result, 22 April 08. 2Q08 will be July. I think 1Q08 will be good as the RM were reported to be better in Jan, but I did not follow-up Feb & Mar. Plus additional contribution of crude oil from new oil field from China in the E&P activity which benefit significantly from the high oil price lately. If result is favourable, the stock will surge before the announcement, which happened many times before. Then $7.50-$7.80 in the next 2 weeks is possible man.....dream on...hahaha! Some big blues were giving out quarterly divvy like DBS and SGX. Wonder SPC will follow suit...this will boost investor interest leh...

For next financial report likey falls in Sep this yr, with the output from SPC owned crude oik plants at Indon and China, thats will further add 1H of SPC earning in 2008. What else SPC then can give, not sure but the parent shares likely to be obvious n encouraging, provided there is no adversed crisis along the line till then,AK view only.

I think many of us here has about the same yrs of exposure to stock mkt as you. However, I have not been about to invest so successfully like you to get double the rise of STI constantly, I am not sure about the rest. Keep up the good work and please change your nick, does not sound like you...LOL.

You actually have a choice now that you are still in GREEN with SPC. You can exit from here and transfer your fund to a higher beta stock which can drive your $$ faster.

And I have been investing and trading stocks for more than 10 years.

This is the 1st time I bought a stock and the STI went up by more than 15% (from about 2700 to 3150), and my stock SPC went up by less than 10%.

In the past 10 years, I have never owned a stock that rise slower than the STI. Usually most good stocks will go up at about double the % of the STI.

I agree that SPC was market darling last year, and if u really buy big, u win big last year.

But sadly, SPC is last year's fashion. This year is prob finance and property.

U can still make 10% with SPC, but whether u want to buy banks, property or shipyards and get 40% to 50% instead.

Of course, if we already have alot of $, then 10% is still alot of profit.

Guess it's a matter of personal choice.

Hi Goondoo,

It's obvious we are of 2 different camp of investors, although we have something in common - we are holding SPC...LOL.

Do you know that around mid Jan08 to mid Feb08, SPC traded from a low of $5.20 to a high of $7.50 (+$2.30), in a short span of time, 3 weeks. Compare that with any blue chips this period, all of them was doing the downtrend. Do you know how excited and delighted we were when the whole screen was red and only one green counter - that was SPC. I guess you dun feel it bcos you were not in SPC yet.

Now all those blues surged up a lot (I have to agree) and SPC was climbing slower than those blues. If you were to be invested with those blues as well as SPC at around mid Jan08, I am sure you will not feel so pessimistic about SPC now. I think you are not wrong in your choice of counter, but your timing.

Idesa,

Me dun wish to be wet blanket, but the painful truth is that no fund manager wants SPC.

It is probably the lowest P/E and highest dividend stock in Singapore but no fund wants it. So to be blunt, the stock price will probably stay at the $6 to $7 for the rest of the year. Those with vested interest will probably treat it like a fixed deposit and then pass it to our grandchildren at $7 a piece. Haha.

Sorry, for yrs, I hv faith on this counter. Believe or not your choice. Of course you must not bluntly to invest on this joker lah, see situation loh. Just brutally honest, last Oct , I made 80 k on this counter. And before Chinese New Yr, I contra to make 19k, what else you want?

However, due to the bouyant market, I had diverfied my assets to other STI components stocks, Kep Corp n Kepland,  hence, I only secured 10 lots on SPC lately. Previously, my standard was min 30 lots, when near div day. But yet, this is solely my investment strategy, you may  not agree with AK. No hard feeling, we are brothers n sisters leow.

OIL PROXY AND HIGH DIVIDEND PLAY

Three reasons to own SPC:

1) Refining up cycle remains intact - soaring construction cost and shortage of skilled personnel have pushed back new supply additions.

2) Increased contribution of upstream E&P - from a combinations of organic and acquisitive growth. This segment is a direct beneficiary of high oil prices.

3) Stock valuation is among the cheapest in the region at 6.8X FY08 PE backed by very attractive dividends yield of ~9%.

Valuation:

1) Based on 8X regional average PE, fair value of the stock is $8.20

2) Using replacement cost, SPC's 50% stake in SRC alone is worth S$9.60 based on US$25k/boepd.

My view: 8X PE is a little conservative. I am looking at around 10X PE which will value SPC at about $9.80. Hence I am looking forward to see SPC trade above $10.00 in this year.
