TiPhone Mobile Goes Public
BY EKARINA
JAKARTA (IFT) - PT TiPhone Mobile Indonesia plans to hold an initial
public offering (IPO) at the end of this year or early next year at the
latest. The company plans to release 30 percent of its shares.
Garuda Sugardo, Managing Director of TiPhone Mobile, said the
company is still consulting with the Indonesian Stock Exchange
(mini-expose) in order to prepare for the IPO listing. The IPO is
expected to grow business and strengthen the company's fundamentals.
" The proceeds will be used for working capital, additional
information technology infrastructures and retail expansions," Garuda
said without specifying the company's IPO target proceeds.
The company appoints PT Sinarmas Securities as underwriter. TiPhone
Mobile will use their financial statements as of June this year for the
IPO.
The company’s strongest business line is sales of mobile phone and
credit (top-up) vouchers. TiPhone expects phone sales to reach 200
thousand units per month, or 2.4 million units per year. The number of
resellers will also increase from 120 thousand to 200 thousand stores.
From the credit sales business, the company earns about Rp 100 billion
(US$ 11.2 million) per week. Next year, the company plans to expand to
multimedia and content businesses.
Skybee’s Content, Application Businesses
PT Skybee Tbk (SKYB), listed provider of handset and credit
vouchers, had already expanded its business line to content and
applications. This year, the company also expands its scope to the
advertising business by acquiring PT Kaswall Dynamics.
Hendra Kendro, President Director of Skybee, said the company has
huge advertising potentials in the cellular phone business, thus
becoming a reliable business line. This year, the company budgets Rp 20
billion for capital expenditures.
Skybee targets to increase this year’s revenue by at least 40
percent from last year’s Rp 553 billion. The company is also aiming for
a 25 percent net profit growth to Rp 23.7 billion. (*)
IPhone 4S Pre-Orders Sell Out, Apple Orders More Phones |
|||||||||
![]()
AT& T, Verizon and Sprint all sold out of iPhone 4S pre-orders, signaling a possible inability to meet consumer demand.
The availability of the 4S may ride on whether Pegatron is able to meet Apple's new orders. The manufacturer was initially only supposed to handle 15 percent of iPhone 4S production and had not planned to ship its devices until early next year. Apple's new demands on Pegatron come after the 4S set a record by receiving more than one million pre-orders on the first day of its availability. The device won't hit stores until tomorrow, but lines outside of Apple, Verizon, Sprint and AT& T's retail stores are growing as customers unable to secure a pre-order attempt to get their hands on the 4S in-store. Apple is no stranger to high demand for its products, and is reportedly prepared to ship up to 25 million devices in the fourth quarter, but this is the biggest iPhone launch the company has yet seen. Past iPhones originally launched on AT& T, came in just two storage sizes, and offered one color. The 4S will release simultaneously on AT& T, Sprint and Verizon in 16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte models, and are available in both white and black. Customers without a pre-order looking to buy an iPhone 4S will have to wait in long lines, and may be out of luck even then, but shipments are still expected to flow steadily throughout the holiday season. In the past, Apple gave priority to its own stores over carrier partners when product supplies were tight. Typically, the largest quantity of devices were sent to flagship stores like the company's locations in New York City and California, as Apple store was likely a better bet than secondary sellers like Best Buy, Radio Shack and cell carriers' retail outlets. Consumer demand for the 4S may be higher than many expected, but with a little luck, determined shoppers should be able to secure a device for themselves. It just may not be the color or storage size they wanted. |

In an exclusive interview to CNBC-TV18, chairman of the Spice Group, BK Modi says that they are mainly looking at Africa to expand the mobile internet business of Spice Mobility. We have already acquired companies in Asia and now we are moving towards Africa, he said. He adds that the large population and the underdeveloped market will be an advantage for them.
For this expansion, the company plans to issue treasury stock to meet its fund requirement of USD 100-200 million. Plus, we have a company in Singapore where we availability of cash which can be used for acquisition to expand in these markets, he adds.
Below is an edited transcript of his interview with Ekta Batra and Reema Tendulkar. Also watch the accompanying video.
Q: We understand that you are scouting for acquisitions in Asia and Africa. Just take us through what's happening on that front?
A: We are entering into the field of mobile internet and we have identified Ivory Coast to Indonesia as our area of business. We have acquired companies in Asia and now we are moving towards Africa.
Africa has a very large population and there is a lot of need for mobile internet. It is lagging behind the internet industry and so it will go straight to mobile internet rather than going through the PC route. That s why Africa is something which is very interesting for us. Our team has already gone there and we are hoping to make some announcements in the next month.
Q: What is the kind of fund requirement that the company has in this fiscal year? Also, are there any plans to tap the markets by way of equity or even the debt?
A: We have funds inside the company because we have no borrowings and we have a cash reserve of more than USD 30 million. Also, we are planning to raise money from our treasury stock which will be in the region of USD 100-200 million, which will be used for the acquisition.
Plus, we have a company in Singapore where we availability of cash which can be used for acquisition to expand in these markets.
Q: When will this treasury sale of shares come in into the markets and will it be by way of private placement?
A: We have certain shares which we are trying to privately place. We feel that it may not be USD 200 million in the present market, we may be able to raise USD 80-100 million initially and these stocks we will be placing privately. We are creating a road show which will going from next week. We are using Elara Capital as our investment banker for this purpose.
Q: Spice Digital was expected to hit the markets last year, if I have not mistaken. Any plans on that?
A: We had said at that time that we were looking for a strategic investor before we hit the market. We have now got a strategic investor, MediaTek Inc. which has invested USD 20 million for a 10% share in the company.

With the established price of USD 200 million for the company, I think we take the company public depending on the market sentiment. That will happen before the end of this year or early next year.
BK Modi’s $1b plan to become a global brand
By Saahil Anant Sep 28 2011
The company that began in 2004-05 has a meagre market share below two per cent in the Indian handset market. “We are planning to take Spice to become a global brand and challenge international players. Though the company is same, we are creating a new culture. We will invest $ 1 billion in next three years,” BK Modi, chairman of S Mobility told Financial Chronicle after the company’s annual general meeting (AGM).
Besides, the company is scouting for acquisitions in Middle East, Asia and Africa to boost the back-end of mobile business such as software and hardware solutions, manufacturing, mobile internet-based applications as well as at the customer-facing retail end of the business. “We have earmarked Rs 2,000 crore for acquisitions. Later, we will also look to acquire firms in developed countries,” Modi added. The company plans to expand to 90 countries including America and Japan by 2015.

Vietnam mobile phone sales thrive despite inflation
Smartphone and feature phone sales in Vietnam increased by 27 percent in unit shipment and 21 percent in value in the first seven months of 2011, despite cutbacks in general consumer spending, reveals a new report released Monday by GfK Asia.
The research firm noted that accelerating inflation had affected Vietnam's economy since the beginning of the year and increased the country's cost of living. However, the mobile phone sector continued to thrive under these economic conditions, it added.
GfK saw declined sales across various market segments it tracked including IT, home appliances and consumer electronics, but the mobile phone sector remained unaffected and instead, enjoyed continued growth, said Van Tran Khoa, general manager of GfK Vietnam.
Even as prices of basic living necessities such as food and fuel increased, Vietnamese consumers continued to splurge on the latest phone technology, the analyst said.
The report noted that the average price of a smartphone was at US$300, five times the price of a feature phone which averaged at US$66. Overall, 1 in 10 mobile phones purchased in 2011 was a smartphone and its share in the overall market grew by 10 percent to 34 percent.
The smartphone category propelled the mobile industry's good performance even though feature phones also enjoyed the positive growth. Smartphone unit sales grew over 73 percent this year over the same period last year, boosting the value of this market segment to nearly US$280 million, up 67 percent from last year's US$168 million.
Although the feature phone segment continued to expand, the growth momentum slowed to 24 percent in unit shipment and 6 percent in value compared to 34 percent and 7 percent, respectively, the year before.
Van said: " As with the other developing markets in the region, the smartphone industry in Vietnam presents high growth potential for manufacturers for at least the upcoming few years. We can expect intensifying competition in the marketplace as increasing number of manufacturers foray into the scene to cash in on this growing sector."
He added that, ultimately, consumers will stand to gain from the growing choice of smartphone brands and models made available to the Vietnamese market at lower pricepoints.
HTC interested in buying its own mobile OS

Summary
Chairwoman Cher Wang says that HTC has had discussions internally, but also that the company won't move impulsively.
Events
Governmentware 2011
27 - 29 September 2011
Suntec City Convention Hall
HTC is keen on buying its own mobile operating system, a move that could help differentiate the smartphone manufacturer from its competition.
HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang, speaking to the Economic Observer of China in a report picked up by Taiwan's Central News Agency, confirmed the company's interest.
" We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse," Wang said in an interview with the Economic Observer.
A recent sequence of events has many wondering whether some of the major handset manufacturers may start looking toward a mobile operating system of their own. Google's decision to purchase Motorola Mobility, while helpful on the patent front, puts the Internet giant in competition with its handset partners. Hewlett-Packard's decision to spin off its PC division and shutter its mobile business potentially puts its WebOS platform up for sale.
The rumors have already swirled around Samsung Electronics, but the company has denied interest in both WebOS and Intel-backed MeeGo. Unlike the other smartphone players, Samsung has its own home-grown OS in Bada, which is available in smartphones in select regions of the world.
HTC, meanwhile, is wholly dependent on Android and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. The company has done an admirable job of customizing the user interface and experience with its Sense user interface, but the allure of creating an end-to-end experience on a phone, a la Apple's iOS, is likely an enticing one.
" We can use any OS we want," Wang said. " We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform," Wang said. " Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS."
Taiwan's HTC has been one of the primary beneficiaries of Android's rapid success. The company was the first to partner with Google on an Android phone, debuting the G1 on T-Mobile USA in 2008. Since then, HTC has seen a wave of competitors jump into the business with their own Motorola phones, including consumer electronic titans such as Samsung.
HTC, meanwhile, hasn't been shy about making purchases in the recent months. The company made the baffling decision to spend US$300 million for a majority stake in Dr. Dre's Beats headphone business last month. In July, it purchased S3 Graphics for US$300 million to get hold of its patents to better defend itself against Apple.

Microsoft Details Windows 8, Targets Mobile Devices |
||||
![]()
Microsoft
unveiled its new Windows 8 platform, featuring a touch-screen interface
with a traditional mouse and keyboard, betting on a platform designed
to run on PCs, tablets and smartphones.
Windows 8 is expected to be integrated with Windows Live, so users can access photos stored on SkyDrive, Facebook and Flickr as if they were stored locally. The integration will also blend instant messaging, contact information and calendars across multiple services via cloud services. Users will also be able to transfer all their settings from one machine, like a PC, to other mobile devices, just by logging into Windows Live. Windows 8 will also feature a new login option, where users make dots or lines on a photo, in addition to the traditional PIN or password method. Also, apps will be able to connect to one another using " contracts." Consumers can get apps from its exclusive Windows Store, which will reportedly stock both mobile apps as well as classic desktop programs. Microsoft has yet to release details concerning a revenue-sharing arrangement with developers. For the security conscious, Windows 8 will have an anti-virus component built into the operating system, and Microsoft's security program, Windows Defender, will defer to user-installed third-party anti-virus software. The arrival of the Windows 8 platform comes at a time when mobile devices are challenging Microsoft's traditional domination in desktop and laptop computers. The company failed to keep up with rivals like Apple and Google, taking only a sliver of the mobile market share. Windows 8 also follows news this spring of Microsoft's strategic partnership to put its Windows Phone OS on Nokia handsets, a move that may help it gain a stronger foothold in the smartphone market, but not a clear advantage. Windows 8's promise to unify both mobile and desktop computing environments may give Microsoft that missing edge. The integrated ecosystem may appeal to a wider audience if Windows 8 can deliver and reach consumers who increasingly use more than one device for entertainment and productivity. The cross-platform development may also make it easier for developers to create apps, which would further solidify the Windows platform. The company recently began talking with developers about making software for Windows 8. The Windows 8 announcements will continue, as will developer talks, helping Microsoft address any flaws in advance of the software's proposed rollout in 2012. Microsoft hasn't announced a specific date beyond that, or given details about how many versions of the operating system there will be. |
HTC Says IPhone Isn't Cool Anymore |
|||||||||||||||||
![]()
HTC's president says the iPhone
isn't " cool" anymore, pointing to its adoption by older users as Apple
gears up to release the next-generation successor to the popular
handset.
" The iPhone becomes a little less cool than it was," Fichter said. " They were carrying HTCs. They were carrying Samsungs. They were even carrying some Chinese manufacturer's devices." Fichter also said he thinks the Macbook Air is still considered cool by younger crowds, but the iPhone is not because it attracts older users. His statement is supported by a recent study done by Hunch, which showed Android owners tend to be younger, ranging in age from 18 to 34, and only have a high school diploma. Reports have shown Android users tend to be younger than iPhone users, but analysts attribute the discrepancies to the differences in price. Several Android phones carry lower price tags than Apple's iPhone, which makes those devices more attractive and accessible to younger users with lower income. Apple may be headed for trouble in the future, however, if the difference in user age is about more than just price. Today's younger users will eventually become the core of the smartphone market. Apple will see its customer base shrink along with its market share if this group sticks with Android. But Fichter's statement may be that of a competitor trying to put rival Apple's iPhone in a bad light. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS are still the top two selling smartphones in America, and the unveiling of the iPhone 5 in the coming months will likely restart the Apple hype that stalled without its regular June iPhone refresh. Young users may tend to own Android phones, but it's still unclear whether they'll stick by the platform or transition to the iPhone once they move on to higher-paying jobs with more disposable income. |
More Cell Phone Distributors Go Public in Indonesia
BY ADITYA PERDANA PUTRA, MUHAMMAD IQBAL & RHEZA ANDHIK
JAKARTA (IFT) – Indonesia’s stock market will have more cellular phone
distributors this year. Following PT Trikomsel Oke Tbk's (TRIO)
entrance into the market in 2009, PT Erajaya Swasembada, owner of the
Erafone mobile phone retailer, will conduct an initial public offering
(IPO) this year. Erajaya will release approximately 40 percent of its
shares.
Eddy Sugito, Director of Corporate Valuation  of
the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), said that Erajaya has conducted  the
mini exposure to IDX authorities in August. The company has also
applied for the permit to obtain a preliminary contract.  It will
register its shares in the IDX in November this year.
Eddy said that Erafone’s IPO uses the  June 2011
financial statement. The company appointed PT Buana Capital, Credit
Suisse and JP Morgan as underwriters.
The company was established in 2002 and is one of
the official retail distributors of Nokia, Samsung, iPhone and other
phone brands. According to its plan, the company's underwriters and
management will conduct road shows in several countries, including the
US.
The IFT Research Department sees that Erafone’s
IPO is the right move to obtain fresh funds to improve its performance.
The growth of mobile phone sales in Indonesia is an opportunity for the
company to increase its business revenue.
Indonesia’s cellular phone market continues to
grow based on the performance of publicly-listed vendors and
distributors such as PT Trikomsel Oke Tbk and PT Skybee Tbk (SKYB) in
the first half of the year. In the first semester, Trikomsel posted a
Rp 3.44 trillion (US$ 402.48 million) revenue, a 41 percent YOY
increase from last year’s Rp 2.42 trillion.
Sales of mobile phones was the main revenue
contributor  at about 75 percent. Mobile phone sales rose 48.7 percent
to Rp 2.95 trillion. Earnings before interest expense, taxes,
depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) grew 49.5 percent to Rp 238.71
billion. The company’s net profit also rose 45.4 percent from Rp 83.20
billion to Rp 120.93 billion.
Meanwhile, Skybee recorded a 360 percent revenue
increase to Rp 787.7 billion from Rp 170.9 billion in the first half of
last year. This boosted the company’s profit by 259 percent to Rp 17.6
billion.  It also booked a 460 percent YOY increase in net profit to  Rp
16.8 billion from Rp 3 billion in the same period last year.
The IFT Research Department said that the growth
of cellular phones in Indonesia is also driven by the declining prices
of smart phones, specifically those using the Android operating system.
Last year, the International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that Indonesia’s cell phone shipments reached 25.5 million units. This is a 45.7 percent growth from the previous year. This year, IDC projects that it will reach 36 million units, growing 41 percent from the year before. (*)
