[ATHENS] Greece more than doubled its forecast for a budget surplus before interest payments this year, hinting at light at the end of the tunnel for its battered economy and boosting its chances of securing more leeway on its debts to the European Union and International Monetary Fund.
After nearly going bankrupt and almost crashing out of the eurozone last year, Greece has been buoyed by more positive economic news in recent months, including a bumper season for tourism and progress in bringing its finances back on track.
In a revised budget plan for 2014, Athens confirmed that it would emerge from a six-year recession with growth of 0.6 per cent next year.
The economy has shrunk by nearly a quarter since 2008 as it grappled with a deep financial crisis.

 

Drewry's Eastbound Trans-Pacific Rate Jumps $250

The Drewry benchmark rate for shipping from Hong Kong to Los Angeles jumped $250 per 40-foot-equivalent unit in the week of Nov. 20 to $1,986, a sign that a Transpacific Stabilization Agreement-recommended general rate increase has been at least partially successful.

The TSA had suggested an increase of $400 per FEU, set for Nov. 15, and the $250 per FEU increase over last week indicates that the GRI recommended by the TSA was partially accepted by the market, Drewry said in this week?s release. Drewry expects some erosion in pricing in the coming weeks.

The 14.4 percent jump was the first increase in this lane since the week of September 4, and rates had tumbled $350 per FEU in the interim. Despite the rise, the average spot freight rate in the week of Nov. 20 was still 9.4 percent below where it was a year ago, when it stood at $2,192 per FEU, and 10.3 percent, or $228 per FEU, below the rate of $2,213 per FEU at the beginning of 2013.

According to SCFI data issued by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, the spot rate from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast rose 9.7 percent, or $167, in the week of Nov. 15 to $1,885 per FEU.

[PARIS] The US and British economies speeded up slightly in the third quarter but expansion in several other economies slowed, leaving OECD-area growth at 0.5 per cent, the OECD said on Monday.
The latest provisional OECD data painted a picture of overall 1.4-per cent growth over 12 months, but of faltering recovery stuck at 0.5 per cent growth in the last two quarters.
Recovery of the eurozone and wider European Union economies slowed down from the second to third quarters, with the French and Italian economies shrinking, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said.
However, compared with output 12 months earlier in the third quarter of last year "growth for the OECD area accelerated to 1.4 per cent compared with 1.0 per cent in the second quarter," the OECD said.

 

[BRUSSELS] The eurozone posted another big 12-month increase in its trade surplus on Monday, the latest monthly data from the EU's Eurostat agency showed.
The first estimate for September gave a 13.1-billion-euro surplus (US$17.7 billion) for the trade in goods with the rest of the world, compared with 8.6 billion euros in September 2012.
A trade surplus is one of the factors of growth in an economy, whereas a deficit tends to sap growth, and so achieving a trade surplus is of critical importance to economies in crisis.
Compared to figures for August, the European Union said that the increase arose from a 1.0-per cent increase in seasonally-adjusted exports, and a 0.3-per cent fall in imports.

Shipping rates to increase on routes out of Asia

Hapag-Lloyd, Europe?s fourth-largest shipping line, has in the last month announced general rate increases on several routes, with other lines expected to follow.

A glance at the German company?s rates announcements shows that since April 2013, Hapag-Lloyd has brought in general rate increases (GRIs) on routes India to North America, North America to Oceania, Asia to the Americas, and Asia to Europe, amongst others.

Many of these rate increases are a few hundred US dollars per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), though on May 15 the liner announced Asia-Europe westbound hikes of $1,000 per TEU.

The majority of these increases are due to take effect in late May or early June, with the Asia-Europe hike beginning July 1.

All of the shipping lines are experiencing difficult times, and GRI announcements from the other lines should be expected as they try to restore freight rates, an executive at one shipping line told Undercurrent News.

Other lines would be following suit, but not with increases in the region of $1,000, in his opinion.

Hapag-Lloyd will also implement a peak-season surcharge on routes from Asia to northern Europe of $500 per TEU, to run between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30. Several other lines are announcing similar peak charges.

Rough seas in Q1

Shipping lines have, on the whole, experienced a rough start to 2013, as the rate increase reported in Undercurrent at the beginning of the year was not implemented fully.

While rates increased across some routes and lines, the changes were not as drastic as expected, with the impact on seafood prices and on the margins of shipping companies being relatively mild.

For Bangkok-based frozen supplier Siam Canadian Group, the GRI had less impact on business than early mortality syndrome, managing director Jim Gulkin told Undercurrent, though rates continue to creep up.

?To USA main port, from June to December 2012, the freight was up by $800. From Jan. 1 2013 up to now, freight was up by $500 per 40ft container,? he said.

An overcapacity of ships on the ocean has been keeping rates down for years, and in January Maersk Line, the world?s largest shipping firm, announced capacity cuts as well as rates increases.

This went some way to improving matters for shipping lines, who took the opportunity to increase their rates to a greater or lesser degree, but did not last.

As predicted by sources at the time, competition among lines quickly drove the rates back down.

In its first quarter results, Hapag-Lloyd saw a loss of ?93 million ($120m) ? an improvement on Q1 2012′ s loss of ?132.4m ($170.8m).

But the company?s 2012 annual report shows it is struggling to get by, with revenues of ?6.8 billion resulting in an EBIT of just ?3m ($3.9m) [after substantial investments of ?791m].

?If there is no sustained improvement in the Hapag-Lloyd Group?s earnings position, the rating agencies could further downgrade Hapag-Lloyd?s creditworthiness,? said the firm in its report.

Meanwhile Maersk Line, part of Danish oil and shipping conglomerate AP Moller-Maersk, did turn in a 2012 profit of $461m (after a 2011 loss of $553m), partly through cutting capacity and putting its rates up.

CMA CGM, France?s largest shipping company and the world?s third-largest, recorded a profit of $361m in 2012.

China-based Cosco Container Lines, which has also just announced a GRI of $1,000 per 40-foot container on some routes, saw a 2012 profit of $46.8m.

For investor still got like a few more months to hang out before daylight. In short 2013 is another repeat of 2012 sluggish global growth year. If US 4Q GDP exceed expectation and hit above 3% then next year demand would grow. By the way 1Q is always a good trading quarter for shipping stocks as they tend to be on the upside movement. 

 

SCFI: Shanghai-to-US Spot Container Rates Rise in Week of GRI

Spot container rates from Asia to the U.S. East and West coasts measured by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index increased more than $100 per 40-foot container in the week of Nov. 15. This was the first increase in these lanes since early September. The Transpacific Stabilization Agreement had recommended an increase of $400 in all Asia-U.S. lanes, set for Nov. 15.

Rates in Asia-U.S. lanes have risen around the GRI due to two factors, according to Jean-Marie Lamay, Head of Commodity and Freight Solutions at HSH Nordbank. The increase can be seen as a result of the industry?s approach to maintain discipline, as well as a result of the quality of ships calling on U.S. harbors. The U.S. does not yet have the ability to accept ultra-large ships, which increases stability in the U.S. market a bit, keeping at bay the competition that Europe-bound lanes are feeling. However, it is still questionable whether these increases can be sustained, given no change in the fundamentals and a lack of confidence in the U.S. economy.

Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, U.S. East Coast, week ending Nov. 15, 2013

The spot rate from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast rose 9.7 percent, or $167, from the previous week to $1,885 per FEU, according to SCFI data issued by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange. This jump folloed a decline of $271 per FEU during the past eight weeks. Despite the increase, the spot rate in the week ending Nov. 15 is still 15.2 percent below the level in the same week last year and 15.1 percent less than at the beginning of 2013.

The spot rate to the U.S. East Coast climbed 3.4 percent, or $106 per FEU, to $3,184 in the week ending Nov. 15, achieving 27 percent of the proposed GRI. During the previous eight weeks, rates fell $317 per FEU in total. The current rate is down 1.9 percent year-over-year, and down 5.2 percent from Jan. 1.

 

SCFI: Asia-to-Europe Rates Slip Further

Spot container rates from Asia to European ports measured by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index gave up more of the gains achieved around the Nov. 1 general rate increase in the week ending Nov. 15. Both Mediterranean and northern European lanes have dropped roughly $200 per 20-foot-equivalent unit in the past two weeks, following jumps from the Nov. 1 GRI of between $700 and $800 per TEU.

The spot rate from Shanghai to Mediterranean ports fell 5.4 percent or $74 from the week before to $1,308 per TEU, according to the latest SCFI data issued by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange. Rates have eroded $191 in the last two weeks, cutting the original increase of $791 by 24.1 percent. Despite this decline, the SCFI to the Mediterranean is up 52.8 percent year-over-year and up 13.0 percent from Jan. 1.

The spot rate from Shanghai to northern European ports for the week ending Nov. 15 dropped 8.1 percent or $107 from the week before, down to $1,213 per TEU. The rate soared $753 per TEU two weeks ago, but it has now lost $210 or 27.9 percent of this gain. The SCFI rate to northern Europe for the week ending Nov. 15 is 1.0 percent below where it was at the same point in 2012, and 4.5 percent lower than at the beginning of 2013.

Carriers have already begun announcing their next round of increases in Asia-Europe lanes. MSC and Hapag Lloyd have announced increases of $775 and $750 per TEU, respectively, set for Dec. 15-16.
