** One biggest exesice just done with 12,000 personnel has their temperature chk on 1st May 2009 at the Istana, with help by media. MOH has done a good job to make people's aware for what can happen if it ever happen here.

A quick chk indicated  St John Ambulance Bridge volunteers is at big risk as they did not put on N95 face mask, fell short of total success in implementation by the organiser where one out of 12,000 get a high temperature is turned away..should have blood sample to be collected.

Agree with U, still i believe Orange (-) is as good as Orange, like enacting  to ask visitors over past seven (7) days instead of quarantin & remain lockup for 7 days, from flu effected state to declare filling up their form where they R orginiated, from temperature chk (scanning) at entry point (out going flu and temperature delcaration to be the the truth...assuming one is telling the truth. This is mean for last stage red to black alert), all data collected from airplanes that flew in...from effected and none effected states, including taxi drivers to remain consistenly alert and to report to MOH hotline, all personnel remain contactable

However is a little too much to shown hospital staffs wearing full blown protective items at hospital entry when dealing with public, refer to **, this is Kiasu...Ya. Putting on a N95 mask is more appreciated unless one is in business of dealing with in coming contact...like in airport where one must wear fully when even dealing with the list or the slightest suspect cases, refering to the nurse case in Germany, proper msg has to be send out 7 days before returning (while aboard or oversea) or coming in...all passengers will be inform of....weather is president men or himself.

Just my sharing thot.

you look at the way the swine flu got infected. So sometimes have to be kiasu...

BERLIN, May 1, 2009 (AFP) - German authorities said on Friday that a nurse
who has not been in Mexico but who has treated a patient with swine flu,
had
contracted the virus but has since recovered.
It is is the first time that the virus has been contracted in Germany, the
health ministry said in a statement. The other three confirmed infections in
Germany are in people who had recently been to Mexico.

No swine flu in Japan

TOKYO, May 1, 2009 (AFP) - Japan’s first suspected case of swine flu has
tested negative for the deadly disease, officials said Friday.
Health authorities carried out detailed tests on a 17-year-old boy who
showed flu symptoms after he returned from a school trip to Canada.
The laboratory tests showed the boy was suffering from a normal human flu,
not H1N1 swine flu, a health official told a nationally televised press
conference.
“This patient has a seasonal, human influenza,” he said. “We can rule out
that this was an infection of a new type of influenza.”

Even Obama staff also kena: If u notice, there is heightened fear in US...

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. authorities are pledging to eventually produce enough swine flu vaccine for everyone but say that the shots
couldn’t begin until fall at the earliest.
Worries about the spread of the virus mounted Thursday as the U.S. swine flu caseload passed 100, and nearly 300 schools closed.
Federal officials had to spend much of the day reassuring the public it’s still safe to fly and ride public transportation after Vice
President Joe Biden said he wouldn’t recommend it to his family.
Scientists were racing to prepare the key ingredient to make a vaccine against the never-before-seen flu strain – if it’s
ultimately needed. But it will take several months before the first pilot lots begin required human testing to make the vaccine is safe
and effective. If all goes well, broader production could start in the fall.
“We think 600 million doses is achievable in a six-month time frame” from that fall start, Health and Human Services Assistant
Secretary Craig Vanderwagen told lawmakers Thursday.
“I don’t want anybody to have false expectations. The science is challenging here,” Vanderwagen told reporters. “Production can be
done, robust production capacity is there. It’s a question of can we get the science worked on the specifics of this vaccine.”
Until a vaccine is ready, the government has stockpiled anti-viral medications that can ease flu symptoms or help prevent
infection. The medicines are proving effective.
Reassurances from top health officials didn’t stop the questions from coming.
An estimated 12,000 people logged onto a Webcast where the government’s top emergency officials sought to cut confusion by
answering questions straight from the public: Can a factory worker handling parts from Mexico catch the virus? No. Can pets get it? No.
And is washing hands or using those alcohol-based hand gels best?
Washing well enough is the real issue, answered Dr. Richard Besser, acting chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He
keeps hand gel in his pocket for between-washings but also suggested that people sing “Happy Birthday” as they wash their hands to make
sure they’ve washed long enough to get rid of germs.
Although it is safe to fly, anyone with flu-like symptoms shouldn’t be traveling anywhere, unless they need to seek medical
care.
The swine flu outbreak penetrated over a dozen states and even touched the White House, which disclosed that an aide to Energy Secretary Steven Chu apparently got sick helping arrange President Barack Obama’s recent trip to Mexico but that the aide did not fly on Air Force One and never posed a risk to the president.
So far U.S. cases are mostly fairly mild with one death, a Mexican toddler who visited Texas with his family – unlike in Mexico
where more than 160 suspected deaths have been reported. Most of the U.S. cases so far haven’t needed a doctor’s care, officials said.
Still, the U.S. is taking extraordinary precautions – including shipping millions of doses of anti-flu drugs to states in case
they’re needed. The World Health Organization is warning of an imminent pandemic because scientists cannot predict what a brand-new
virus might do. A key concern is whether this spring outbreak will resurge in the fall.
The CDC confirmed 109 cases Thursday, and state officials confirm 22 more. Cases now are confirmed in New York, Texas, California,
South Carolina, Kansas, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, Maine, Colorado, Georgia and
Minnesota.

Japan now have 1 probable case.  So Minister Khaw wrong on these (he said Singapore most probabily the first to get swine flu in Asia)

TOKYO - Japan is ready to provide medicine and know-how to the rest of Asia to help the region prevent the spread of swine flu, Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano said on Friday.

Mr Yosano said he would discuss possible anti-flu measures this weekend with his counterparts from Southeast Asia, China and South Korea when they gather in Bali on the sidelines of an annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank.

'There are fears of an outbreak of the flu in Asia, where we live,' Mr Yosano told reporters.

'It's not only a problem for our country,' he said. 'We have to consider our contribution to Asia, such as medical know-how, medicine and vaccines.'

Japan's government on Friday reported its first suspected case of swine flu, a 17-year-old high school student who returned last weekend from Canada.

teeth tot: MOH  has Over DONE with Orange, Should be Orange minus (-) or Yellow plus (+)

S'PORE: Health Ministry (MOH) has sounded the orange alert for the Mexican swine flu pandemic, moving one notch up from yellow the previous day. So far, there are no confirmed cases here.

It is also imposing a home quarantine order on those who have recently travelled to Mexico.
The move comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised its pandemic alert phase from level 4 to level 5 on Thursday.

According to Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, it is only a matter of time before the Mexican swine flu strikes Southeast Asia and its first case could well be in Singapore – one of the region's most globalised cities.

and of course the quarantine order: will be expanded once the country export the swine flu...

Those with a travel history to Mexico over the past seven days will be quarantined for seven days when they enter Singapore and undergo phone surveillance for symptoms for Mexican swine flu. Those who develop symptoms will be referred to the CDC for a thorough assessment. A dedicated ambulance service (tel 993) has been activated to convey such patients to CDC. Should evidence arise that other countries besides Mexico are exporting cases, MOH will also consider imposing similar conditions for travelers returning from those areas.

good quote.

"We have been lucky so far, but I think it will not be long before patients or even deaths start to occur here.  In SE Asia, we are the most globalised country, so the first cluster of cases in SE Asia may well emerge in Singapore.  We must be mentally prepared for this scenario and not be shocked into panic or inaction when it happens"

Japan kena different kind of virus:

TOKYO, April 30, 2009 (AFP) - Japan has reported no human cases of deadly
swine flu so far – but a computer virus of the same name has been spreading on
the Internet in recent days, authorities warned Thursday.
Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) said on its
website that a suspicious Japanese-language email message with an attached file
called “information on swine flu” had been circulating in cyberspace.
“The institute has received reports that the email message falsely
identifying itself as coming from the NIID is circulating,” it said.

looks like Mr.Virus is smitten by the 'human bug' with 'globalization fever' and it seems it is taking all means ... every flight , fly, bird, man ... in establishing his franchise globally ... "If man can do it , so can we " seems to be his mission statement ... hahaha !

(apologies for the dry humour ...)

WHO raises flu alert, demands pandemic plans activated
Posted: 30 April 2009 0451 hrs

GENEVA: The World Health Organisation raised its flu alert Wednesday signalling a swine flu pandemic is "imminent" as a toddler in the United States became the first to die of the disease outside of Mexico.

"All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans," WHO chief Margaret Chan said as she raised the alert to five on a scale of six following WHO health expert talks in Geneva.

"The international community should treat this as an opportunity to ramp up the response. After all, it is really all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic," she added.

Phase five, one step short of a full pandemic, is characterised as a "strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalise... the planned mitigation measures is short," the WHO global emergency planning says.

But Chan stopped short of ordering the production of a pandemic vaccine, a move that would have meant disrupting the production of seasonal flu vaccines.

So far seven deaths have been confirmed in Mexico - the epicenter of the current outbreak - although Mexican officials have said the new multi-strain virus is suspected in 159 deaths. More than 1,300 people are also in hospital with flu symptoms, of which 49 are confirmed cases of swine flu.

To me the most scary part is that the swine flu can be transmitted from human to human. Lagi scary is the reaction of the American govt, a bit lax hah, compare with Singapore (super kiasu)

Since Minister Khaw said that border checks may not pick out all imported cases, as some infected people may appear healthy, it will be a matter of time before someone with swine flu enters Singapore.
