Alli, tks for d elaboration. AK opine that if u hv a system for 3yrs plus, not cost effective to do system upgrade, esp d hardware. As currently computer in d market is cheap n good, getting a new one to have no hassle,at least for d first yr, on site maint guarantee, subsequent free service at service centres.

At most of d computer outlets, u can ask for live demo, ie u login your broking hse, SGX web site etc on d system u indented to buy. Satisfied then buy loh.

computer speed depends much on hardware speed. Bus speed, CPU speed, RAM size and speed, Harddisk speed and size, Win OS , IE/firefox all combined to determine overall speed.

If you  have a 2.4G CPU with 4G RAM , even Win Vista will run so fast that you would not complain. SGX new website load in 2-5 seconds.

I am not sure of your COMPAQ machine, however if the hardware spec is too low, it would not run well with vista ( vista need a lot more memory to load and run than Win XP). So to improve its speed you need to consider either increase the RAM to its maximum , or simply re-install OS to win xp.

Recently owing to SGX new website, I re-install a old machine, just Pentium 1.6G with 1 G Ram with Win XP and firefox, throw away all other softwares. After reinstall WIn XP, the machine is very fast to view SGX website. response is just a few seconds on most commonly views things like all-in-one, corporate distribution and so on.

Thks AK.  Ya my CPU speed of 60hz and the screen refresh rate of 60 to 75 hz. I was thinking whether cpu speed might affect the download time of the quotes, thus looking for a better alternative if any.  I prefer my XP better than the Vista Home.  My XP on Dell performs superb while the Vista Home Basic on Compag starts like a snail.  I feel like throwing away the compaq machines, but have to wait till I get some good machines.  To those who want to buy fast computers you should ask the experience of others before you make your purchases.  Ak can give good advice.  Don't just fall into the salesman pitch.  Dont buy the combination of Vista on Compag else you will regret.

Broadband wise, beware of getting a slow connection.  When I was at my friend's place, I suggested he change his ISP or get another plan.  His M10 (mio) was so slow in connecting and whenever you browse to another URL you have to wait about 5 minutes.  So be careful.  I am looking forward to good ISP coming to Spore,  Regret our local performance.

Oh, sorry, d 3 Mhz is d bandwidth of d home telephony mthly fixed rate plan, come with broadband modem during installation. A normal home telephone line is about $ 29 for 3 mths.

Any phone line plan higher than d normal home telephone line plan is called Broadband on Mobile which allows view video clips online(just like cable TV, Starhup), faster and smoother on web browsing n emailing, etc. Best your 3G hp with 3.5G / HSDPA enable device can use remote lan to access internet every corner in spore. I not try Tekong n Ubin yet.

Not sure wat u meant 60hz on computer. I presume u mention computer speed, CPU. OK lets using a layman term on computer system to optimise data processing n interfacing with other application, ie imaging, web browsing etc. If u r now having MS Windows xp, its fine for home usage liao, less d pro n con mentioned above. If u r still holding Windows 2000 n below, its not adequate for data processing under d current fast moving IT. Up grade to d current system may hv great help. Current system is MS Windows Vista, its much better than xp. Dwell n Accer offer reasonable px now, if u missed d last computer fare.

Hi niuyear, I use citibank because it is incidental to my ready credit given by the bank.  I understand they are using another brokerage for share transactions, but you won't have to deal with this intermediary broker. I tried to search for citi's realtime quotes (if what you mean "streamlined") but couldn't find one.  So I solve the solution of realtime quotes by using the realtime quotes of other brokers.  I have 5 monitors, one for one broker. So no problem even if I couldnot find realtime quotes in citibank because all I need is to create a watchlist of the stocks and fill in the price I want at the popup order form.  I use citi to buy US and SGX stocks.

And for AK, I much agree with what he said though I don't use 3Mhz,.. just the normal 60hz computers.  Perhaps AK can help on the issue of what are the best systems for our trading needs.

Cheers.

Most important is d service platform is user friendly, efficient n effective and wat u want they hv it. But not easy to hv a single broking hse to hv 100% of that. However, u may compromise d various broking hse shorting comings by opening 3 or even 4 online broking hse account,  with below line-up:

1st-show real time Index only. For those system hang quite often.

2nd-toggle to show stock px, be it top active, gain n loss. For normal platform, but a bit slow.

3rd-ready to place order. For those hv immediate pop up screen within a sec once your transaction was filled, get away d hassle to sw screen to view d order status. Is a bonus if there is also email prompting for transaction done. It serves as a receipt as well.

4th-access regional online trading, ie Bursa or  HSI. For NYSE, no issue as it was at nite.

To work on d above 4, subcribe line bandwidth must be at least 3Mhz n above in order to hv a smooth data pooling n display.

Cheers.

Hi LauLan

Saw your post you are using citibank.  Is citibank's US trade 'streamlined' ?  Brokerage expensive?  Tks.

Hi All - What criteria will you consider when choosing a brokerage company? Tks in advance your view!

When choosing  brokerage, do you guys consider its 'reliability' in terms of company's background and stability over its trouble free trading on-line platform?

Laulan      ( Date: 03-Jun-2009 11:31) Posted:

Having at least 4 brokerages is the best. Reason: you can have higher trading limits and then in wrong decisions can hedge, eg. buy at one broker but wah market coming down, quickly sell via another (technical short) or quickly buy average through another as new position.  Then can sell when market picks up a bit, but retaining the first buy till you profit.

Once you feel brokerage plays you out, just don't continue anymore because bad experience can repeat and repeat through the same mistake, same error etc.and you will be the one to lose heavy not the brokers.

I now use the DBS< OCBC< UOB and Citibank.  I was also with SAXO but considered left because I withdraw my deposits.  Once you have no margins left, your screen goes blank here and cannot logon anymore, so considered as left but can reapply to join.

Perhaps, can also consider writing to Straits times Forum page If the brokerage firm doesnt entertain or take serious view on the losses by any client? But, i would think they want evidence before publishing the complaints.

During Sars period, i wanted to suggest something and i called them to find out how to do so.  They just asked me to fax my concern to them.  But, my suggestion was not being published.

Yeah, good suggestion to write in to MAS. Calling or complaining to their customer service is pointless. I tried that once, called them and they didn't even bother to pick up thier phones.

If MAS receives numerous complaints about clients losing money because of their trading platform, I'm sure MAS will launch inquiry into the integrity of their system. Then the Big Boss (BB) will gan zeong and then start to clean up their act.  Otherwise, your complaint letters all just thrown to PR to answer in standard PR format, no action.

My broker just advised me writing in to them usually no result but they do fear MAS. So I will write in to MAS tomorrow. If you are truly disgruntled with their poor svc and have lost $ bcos of it, dun just sit there, make them hurt too, write in as well. Our complaints are valid. No one informed us of the problem, not even by email or sms. Basically, they were sitting back and waiting for us to 'discover' ourselves the hard way then call in.

Seems like the silly POEMS system is not only affecting me, causing me lose $$$ but many others too.

As I was seeing the px are coming down, I quickly withdraw my orders. The status then became 'Pending withdrawal'. But when I log in after lunch, it was 'Buy'. DAMN!!! Called my broker but he is on leave...Lose $$$ 'cos of the lousy system. I'm going back to UOBKH from now.
