if want to benchmark pay to private sector, they should also have a independent remuneration team to decide the pay. dum complain, nothing in this world is fair except one thing, everbody will die one day.

Haha, you must be joking that PM donates his increaments to SPCA. There're more important and needy charity organisations in S'pore than SPCA isn't it? That is a very selfish thought, nothing wrong with that though!

Instead of debating or arguing how much our Ministers should be paid and according to benchmark, why not simply ask " Why shouldn't they being paid the amounts? "

Don't forget hor, the stronger the economy of a nation, the stronger will be the Stock Market. And if you pay peanuts you get monkies - look around us and you'll know what I mean! Cheers!

This is a step in the right direction and what a good leader should do. I respect him for this move. I hope he donates it to SPCA because I'm an animal lover.

PM Lee to donate his pay rise to charity for next 5 years

"The Government will pay my full pay, because that is how the system must work. But for 5 years, I will donate the increase in my salary from this and subsequent revisions," added the PM.

"I do not expect other ministers to follow. What individual ministers do is up to them. I know that they already support various worthy causes. It should not be a public ostentatious display, but a private matter for them to decide at their own discretion."

PM Lee encouraged all Singaporeans to donate to good causes.

Mr Lee said the pay revision is "politically a most difficult decision" to make but it is an "absolutely critical" issue.

"If we do not tackle it now, the problem will not go away; it will just get worse. And we will be in serious trouble," he said.

The Cabinet discussed the pay hike issue at length, said the PM, adding that Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, in particular, "strongly encouraged me to do it."

"They have been Prime Ministers - they know the importance of having good ministers to help them in their work," he told Parliament. "Finally, it is my call as PM. I have decided to move now, because the overriding importance of keeping salaries competitive."

The pay for ministers is still not comparable to what top people get in the private sector. Don't forget that it is a far heavier burden running a country. Moreover one must always be prepared to face criticism which may not be constructive all the time. Just think if you are someone at the top and the private sector pay so much higher, where would you go?  You go into politics and sacrifice all that privacy. That is also a price one has to pay. Just because Singapore is doing well it is natural for people to assume that things will continue to do so. Things are not as simple as one thinks. Our ministers have been flying all over the place getting trade deals. That's hard work. That is so we have jobs and the country can continue to prosper.

agree with tanglinboy, no pt discussing this anymore becos' it has been decided.

Having said that, I want to say do not judge a book by the cover, and do not take read news article at face value. What they did not mention is that George Bush gets to enjoy Camp David, airforce 1, helicopter ride to camp david on weekends and many other allowances and perks which are not covered in his salary. Certainly if you add all these perks, the total amt will be many times more than what our dear PM earns. Besides, every single ex-president (US) gets lifetime pension plus building a public place like Clinton Library, Reagan Library with their name on it.

Hahaha..... raising public sector pay is always a sticky issue lah.... well...look at it this way,

Singapore is 5 times more peaceful than US, 5 times cleaner than US, 5 times safer than US..... etc...

If only the gahmen can make the climate here 5 times better than US... I will be very happy liao....

My 2 cents worth.... let's concentrate more on making money from stocks lah... no point discussing this topic anymore.
