Hi iPunter, there are two Chinese festivals that are determined by solar calendar (the rest are by lunar calendar), namely Qingming (equivalent to Good Friday) around 5th April and Dongzhi (equivalent to Christmas if according to your idea of slight variation ....) around 22nd Dec.

Hi iPunter,  Too busy so did not log onto this platform until today. I have been observing the movement of the sun since primary school. Seen it in Chinese Almanac as well. For detail understanding of calendars, you can log onto http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/calendar/calendar-talk-SP-handout.pdf

SporeGuy...

Just to put the record straigh following your post...

X'mas is a date chosen and fixed by the ancient astronomers, otherwise known as wise ones,  for the purpose of celebrating the a birth of a symbolic 'son' of the earth. So they were probably aware of any minor astronomical variations of the apparent positions of the sun from year to year. And this is the reason why 25th December was chosen as the fixed date of the birth of the "Saviour" as an entity.

In this regard, it is interesting to note that a further celebration along the same astronomical lines will be coming in April, which is the Resurrection.. And this is not a fixed date, but a variable one which falls on different dates every year. But more about this at the appropriate time.
