SingTel
April 25 close: S$3.82
Deutsche Bank, April 24
THE Sing dollar's (S$) strengthening is another reason to be cautious on SingTel at current prices. Given SingTel's substantial non-S$ exposure, forex trends are important. In FY07, SingTel benefited as the Sing dollar weakened against key currencies, supporting the group's P&L and valuation. But recent S$ strength will hamper non-S$ consolidation into group P&L and potentially valuation.
For example, we estimate for every 10 per cent S$ trends above our overall expectations, our SingTel valuation declines by 8 per cent. As such, given the high valuation of the Singapore / Australia operations, the strengthening S$ is another reason to remain relatively cautious.
The S$ is now strengthening against many of SingTel's component currencies, including the Indian rupee (+8 per cent since January 2008), Philippine peso (+10 per cent), and Thai baht (+12 per cent). Against the Indonesian rupiah, the S$ has hit new two-year highs. Only against the Australian dollar has the S$ been relatively stable over the last few months.
A stronger S$ will constrain non-S$ contributions (includes Optus) and affect future P&L forecasts. For example, we estimate Q4 2008 forex rates will constrain SingTel's Q4 2008 associate contributions by approximately 3 per cent q-o-q, and longer-term P&L forecasts could be optimistic if S$ further strengthens.
In addition, a stronger S$ will also impair valuation (for example, if S$ is 10 per cent stronger versus the Indian rupee than our forecast, then SingTel's total valuation would be reduced by 2.5 per cent). At this stage we maintain our forecasts (forex, P&L and valuation), but relative S$ strength is another reason to be cautious.
Our sum-of-the-parts valuation is based on Singapore's operations at $0.91 per share, Optus at $0.92 per share, listed associates under our coverage at TP, listed associates not under our coverage at market value and investment value for all others. Maintain 'hold' and the $3.95 TP for SingTel.
HOLD
Ok bull, have to continue and continue to believe its a never die counter.
Hi Naproxen, not to worry with this blue chip counter. I have confidence in this counter though not vested currently. Vested many times previously and profited from it :)
AK, 3.86 you also want to Q ??? I kena stuck with 3.84 two days ago. Saw it coming down to 3.79 yesterday. A bit panick now. But nevermind lah, come to worst just hold.
Oh no, AK Q at 3.71 after market closed. Now, DJ is high, may Q again 3.82 after this. However, if DJ later surge high, then will up the stake to 3.86. Cheers.
