From ST interview Pg A8 of Wed 17 March 2010.
Ronald Tan(Casino Expert) said that he did not forsee Genting or Sands exceeding their forcast of US$1 billion each in revenue fromthe gaming within a yr. This may not cover the sky-high building costs of both IRs, which took place amid construction boom that saw escalating sand and manpower prices. The total bill for both : over $13 billion.
He said "Don't assume for a moment that once you land a casino, you will make money. It's a question of averages. Half the casinos around the world are in the red. Within the next 3 yrs, the other attractions -- theme park and hotels -- will likely not make up for the shortfall." He holds out little hope for Universal Studios, once the novelty wears off after one year. The majority of Universal's attractions are outdoors, which means people have to line under hot sun. Even HK, a temperate country cannot succeed with Disneyland with huge China hinterland. HK's Ocean Park is more successful bcos its initial investment started from a very low base. Our cost of doing business here is now very worrying. The silver lining is for it to be like turf club or Fraser and Ascott brands of Service Apartment with their policies and regulatory aspects. We can become PSA and HDB in Casinos.

18 LiONS OPEN Universal Studios Singapore Today (Thursday, 18 March 2010)
Genting: Geared up for Universal Studios 18 Mar opening
Summary: Genting Singapore (GS) will open the doors of Universal Studios Singapore (USS) to the public at 8.28am on 18 Mar 2010, with 18 attractions and rides spread over seven zones to entertain visitors. We went for a sneak preview on 17 Mar and came away quite impressed by the high level of preparation. Overall, the USS experience was comparable to theme parks in Australia and Japan; the feedback we got from other preview visitors was also pretty positive. With the opening of USS, we believe that it will complete another piece of the puzzle for Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) and increase the attractiveness of its integrated resort (IR) concept, which is targeted towards the family-oriented tourist market. Although we are keeping our fair value unchanged at S$1.04, which yields just under 10% upside, we believe that the stock price could potentially overshoot our fair value in the near term; hence we maintain our BUYrating.
